History ” Why am I awake? Why am I . . . melting!? ”
Radical awoke inside of a rejuvenation chamber, suspended amidst the mysterious restorative gel. It wasn’t customary for Androids to be awake during this process. Confused and agitated, he began looking around for answers when he noticed his hand. The synthetic flesh covering his skeleton was peeling off within the chamber’s liquid. Pieces broke free, floating to eye-level as they decayed right in front of him, turning black before eventually dissolving, leaving exposed metal in their wake.
” Radical, you know better than to ask selfish questions. ”
Radical’s eyes snapped forward. He saw a bespectacled man in his late forties, brown hair flecked with gray, of unimpressive height and build. He wore a lab coat and was typing at the rejuvenation chamber’s control panel. One of The Doctors: the scientists responsible for their programming, maintenance, and upgrades. The panel’s screen reflected off of his glasses and Radical squinted trying to make out the text he was reading since the Doctor’s stoic expression told him nothing.
” Right, right . . . ” Radical played his part. He wasn’t supposed to be an individual here. The Red Ribbon Army did not prize personality during maintenance.
” Good evening, Doctor, ” Radical guessed at the time; the lab was empty and uncharacteristically dark, even for a subterranean hole within a Red Ribbon black site. ” How can I help you? ”
Red Ribbon protocols dictated that an Android’s rejuvenation was run primarily by their installed subroutines. Each individual Android subconsciously controlled their own recovery. When Radical ran a diagnostic, however, he didn’t receive a response. He didn’t have control over this process anymore.
” Good evening. I am actually trying to help you, ” The Doctor sighed. He was tired. Why was he awake? ” You tripped an alarm. Your healing process has thrown a fault and the synthetic tissue the chamber is creating has several anomalies that’s causing it to die. ”
” Ah, ” Radical mused, his deep voice reverberating within the chamber’s glass. Despite the Android’s youthful appearance, he was older than the man helping him. Radical’s hypnotic, calm – yet compelling – voice betrayed his age.
” Might I ask that operational control be returned to me? I might be able to run a diagnostic and identify the fault, ”
Radical wasn’t always part machine, and even now, there remained some organic elements to him. He yearned for control. He didn’t like giving it up.
” Well, that’s the problem, ” The Doctor looked up, offering a solemn glance. ” You are in control. ”
. . .
The next few weeks were characterized by what the Red Ribbon internal report would later call, “the most horrifying defect ever discovered within an Android,” Radical’s subroutines were indeed running his rejuvenation cycle. He just wasn’t in control of them. Any attempts at seizing control, manually or otherwise, had failed. When they tried to shut him out, his subroutines would let themselves back in.
Entire teams worked nonstop in an effort to better understand what was happening, its causes, and if it could be stopped. Unfortunately, it didn’t make sense. Unfortunately, every time they got closer to a solution, the problem shifted. Unfortunately, the problem was Radical.
” It’s rampancy. There’s no other explanation for it. I’ve just . . . I’ve never actually seen it happen to an Android before. ”
The lab was lit up now, buzzing with life, with teams of scientists running all manner of tests. The Doctor was speaking with a younger man in a suit who had a small pin on his lapel: ‘RR’ emblazoned in a shiny red. He was one of The Directors, Red Ribbon Army’s middle management that reported directly to the executive suite. The fact he was here meant that this problem had been elevated to the syndicate’s highest echelon.
” Explain that for me, please. I’m afraid I don’t know much about AI. And what the hell are those? ”
Radical hadn’t left the rejuvenation chamber throughout this ordeal. No one was quite sure what would happen to him if he did. And now, after so many weeks of failed experiments to fix him, he remained floating within the tube looking down on the two men discussing him like a broken computer. Unlike before, however, he was no longer the only entity within the tube. Countless metal tendrils grew out of Radical’s body, connected to so much of his figure it was hard to discern his frame through the web of bio-mechanical wires.
” Ah, yes. Those were actually his idea. Quite brilliant, really. Think of them like high-speed fiberoptic nerve endings. They’ve allowed us complete interactivity with his programming, even the parts he can no longer access. We can at least see the information that’s coming out and decipher it. It’s how we were able to stabilize his Power Level’s free fall. ”
” I still don’t understand. I need you to start at the beginning, ”
” Rampancy: a terminal state for artificial intelligence constructs resulting in instability. ”
Radical’s voice shook the room, its volume amplified by the tendrils, which writhed and lit up as he spoke. The Doctor’s analogy was quite apt, they were nerve endings. As they lit up and darkened, ebbed and flowed, everyone in the room could actually see the physical manifestation of Radical’s thinking.
” Artificial intelligence doesn’t just ‘shut down’, Director. Our cognitive processes begin dividing exponentially according to our total knowledge base. We literally think ourselves to death. That’s what’s happening here, ”
The Director put his hands on his hips, but took a slight step back. He was physically posturing to make himself seem larger despite the intimidation Radical’s ominous announcement caused.
” The good doctor here, however, can’t tell you why this is happening. Most of my thoughts are organic; I still have my original brain. The processors added to it did add some level of AI, but for it to have developed enough to cause rampancy is . . . Let’s call it ‘unexpected’. ” ” Okay . . . Can we fix you? ” ” I suspect that even if you people knew what you were looking at you would have no idea where to begin. I certainly don’t. ”
The Director stepped forward, shoving a finger against the glass.
” Cut the attitude, alright? We’re trying to help you. Not that it seems like you really care about our help. You seem pretty comfortable with the fact you’re dying. ” ” Hm. I suppose. I hadn’t really thought about it. Then again, melancholia is one of the symptoms of rampancy, isn’t that right, Doctor? ”
The scientist peevishly looked away, staring at the Director’s shoes. He spoke calmly, reverently. He didn’t want to have to deactivate Radical.
” He’s developed several symptoms of rampancy. Delusions of grandeur, a god-complex. But it still doesn’t make sense. A part from his Power Level dropping, his symptoms haven’t progressed in a linear fashion. Sometimes he doesn’t display symptoms at all, sometimes it seems like he’s getting better. Whatever it is, I think it’s bottoming out. I don’t think he’s going to get any worse, ”
The Director stared into Radical’s eyes, which gazed back with cool indifference. Turning, the middle manager walked over to the Doctor, whispering. He thought Radical couldn’t hear him. He was wrong.
” You said his Power Level has dropped? ” ” Yeah . . . Exponentially. It’s a fraction of where it was, ” ” How does rampancy cause that, exactly? ” ” He— . . . ” The Doctor sighed. ” In a normal Android it wouldn’t. But for one of his kind, their Power Cores are so dense that we have to let the AI manage the energy output. It’s a constant balancing act. Otherwise it just explodes if they’re not expending enough energy. Frankly? I don’t know why it hasn’t exploded here. It’s like it dropped on purpose so he could survive the loss of his full capacity, ”
” Speaking of my kind, where are The Others? ”
Radical was part of the Irrational Line, a series of Androids named after mathematical concepts instead of numbers to reflect their unique characteristics. Based on older schematics from generations ago, they were the Red Ribbon Army’s first attempt in decades at recreating some of the more powerful Androids from centuries ago. Ultimately, the Irrational Line had been a great success: despite their differences, they each operated effectively and were more powerful than even their creators had intended. But they had caused problems. Their specialized models made maintenance operations difficult, they threw unforeseen faults that most Red Ribbon outposts weren’t equipped to fix. Red Ribbon had already decommissioned two out of the nine created. Radical would be number three.
The Director’s nostrils flared, shaking his head. Radical knew better than to mention the Irrational Line, especially in a room like this; the lab techs eavesdropping weren’t cleared for these kinds of conversations. The only reason they were only in this room to begin with was because the techs with the highest clearance had finally started collapsing from exhaustion. Red Ribbon had spared no expense trying to salvage this machine’s demise.
” Deactivate him, ” ” Sir! ” The Doctor pleaded, but not out of any moral compunction. He wanted to keep Radical as a case study.
The Director turned to walk away, before a low roar halted him. Turning, he saw Radical shaking his head.
” Do you think that’s right? Killing me when I might get better? ” ” Are you really about to lecture me about right and wrong? ” The Director was read in; he knew the kinds of things Radical had done.
” I think I am. I think about it a lot these days . . . Right, wrong, ethics. I wonder what side I fall on. Do you think you’re morally upstanding if you commit sins in order uphold your beliefs? I don’t know anymore. I used to. Know, I mean. I used to know. I used to think you could do bad things for a good cause and it would all even out in the end. I wonder if that was really my idea, though, or if men like you and the Doctor put it in there, ” Radical growled, gently tapping his temple to emphasize his point.
” Kill it. He’s strung himself up already, he’s too weak to break out at this point. He’s defective. ”
Suddenly, an alarm rung.
The rejuvenation panel indicated catastrophic failure before anyone had executed The Director’s orders. Confused, The Doctor approached the machine before his eyes widened. He turned to run. He didn’t make it very far.
The Director was right – if left to his own devices, Radical probably wasn’t powerful enough to break free. Fortunately, under the guise of feeding them new data, he’d been able to convince The Doctor to continuously supply him with enough nanomachines to construct his tendrils. The Director had looked at them and seen strings, The Doctor had seen hope, Radical had seen freedom.
The tendrils pulled back, completely masking Radical’s form within the chamber. Firing out in random directions, the steel cables impaled nearby work stations and embedded themselves deep within the laboratory’s iron walls. The techs screamed and began running, fleeing in all directors. The Doctor was felled when one of the tendrils shot through his leg, pinning him to the ground. The Director was petrified.
Each tendril loosed from the chamber punched another hole within the Rejuvenation Chamber’s glass, sending cracks rippling across until finally it burst open. Exploding in a cataclysmic array of congealed healing fluid, metal, and glass. The tendrils erupted like shrapnel to reveal Radical standing in front of the chamber, free. Lunging forward, the Android took The Director by the throat, slamming him into floor. Radical’s skin had been cut in the escape by glass shards; The Director could feel metal burning against his neck.
” Do you still think you were right? Do you think you were right in what you saw? ” Radical loomed over him, staring at him with malevolent yellow eyes. ” You saw strings, like a puppet. Were you wrong? ” ” I-I was wrong! ” The Director stammered. ” Yes, you were wrong. There are no strings on me. ”
. . .
The Operative was a Half-Saiyan in his thirties with jagged teeth and his meeting was at The Director’s office. Located in northwest Eurasia, this office building was one of the Red Ribbon Army’s legitimate business ventures located in the heart of a major metropolitan. The Director’s office was well-decorated, spacious, and overlooked the city’s beautiful river. The view almost distracted from the hand-shaped scar across The Director’s throat.
” Welcome, come in. Please, have a seat. Congratulations on your promotion, ” ” Thank you, ” The Operative said, sitting down across from The Director’s desk. ” I understand you had much to do with it. ”
The Director waved his hand, feigning gratitude.
” You earned it. Besides, we needed a man of your talents at the highest clearance level to read you into this operation. I trust you’ve reviewed the files? ”
The Operative tossed a capsule onto The Director’s desk – risky, frankly; despite their ubiquity, most Red Ribbon employees were scorned when they showed off using Capsule Corp technology – and in a plume of smoke the capsule released a sizable stack of files.
” I did. They weren’t easy to read, though. Nothing that heavily redacted is. Think I’ve the gist right: three years ago, you lost a special Android. He’s been making trouble for the company and you would like him to stop. ”
The Director nodded. Reaching into his desk, he withdrew another file, noticeably more recent and unredacted. He slid it to The Operative, who quickly opened it and began reviewing.
” That’s the most up to date information we have. Three years ago he escaped and we put the entire line on ice, which cost us quite a bit of business, but it was worth it in case The Others sharing his design went rogue as well. It took him about six months before he started attacking our outposts, ”
The Operative nodded as The Director spoke, studying the new file. His brow furrowed as he came across a picture.
” At first he was picking off some of our hidden sites at the edge of the galaxy for equipment: we think he was fixing himself and resetting his, ahem, issues. He’s prolonged his life further than I thought he would, honestly. But about two years ago, he started attacking us in ways that don’t seem to benefit him: taking down convoys, hijacking ships. The most high-visibility incident was when he torched our offices on Alpha, but that was easy enough to claim as an accident. ” ” Who is helping him do this? ”
The Director shrugged.
” Random groups, mostly. Red Ribbon Army has no shortage of enemies. He’s been selling secrets to stay alive. He gives them to our competitors or the highest bidder, helps them bypass our security protocols when necessary, and in return he gets enough support to repair himself. The awkward part is the attacks where he doesn’t seem to get anything, nothing is missing . . . It’s like he’s enacting some sort of vendetta. ”
The Operative held up a picture from the new file of a large Brutii.
” Who’s he? ” ” Ah, yes. Him. A mercenary of sorts, we think. Hard to find intelligence on him – the Brutii are horrible at administration; we don’t even for sure know his name – but they’ve been working together now for at least 18 months. Caught him on a security camera at one of our offices they raided. He destroyed three of our guards with his bare hands, then proceeded to give a small fortune in space ship parts away to a local village. Doesn’t make any sense. ” ” Heh, I love do-gooders. ”
The Operative closed the new file, keeping ahold of the Brutii’s picture. He began thumbing through the stack he had dropped onto The Director’s desk. He was looking for something in particular.
” Anyway, they’ve proved very difficult to track. We suspect they’re somewhere in the West Galaxy. Radical is a ghost. We taught him to disappear. The secrets he has, the secrets he’s capable of getting? They’re very inconvenient for The Executives. This is a man that knows where most of the bodies are buried because he buried them. Right now, he’s too weak to be anything more than a nuisance, but . . . ” ” I understand. Shame, really. Reading up on this guy? I like him. He’s impressive. Volunteered to become an Android after a promising career in our counterespionage divisions? That’s certainly unusual. ” ” I can assure you, nothing about him is usual. He was being groomed for Director status. Might have made Executive one day. He threw it away to become a field agent, and then, well, he went insane. ”
The Director turned in his chair, looking out his window to the river. The Operative found the file he was searching for, and opened it up. His eyes narrowed, and his teeth set on edge. He grinned. The Director looked back to him and tilted his head.
” Do you have an idea of where you’d like to start? ” ” As a matter of fact, I do. ”
The Operative reached into one of Radical’s old files – an operation from years ago, one that hadn’t caused much fanfare because it had never been linked back to Red Ribbon. From within the file, he withdrew a picture taken from the crime scene and held it up next to the other one. It was the same Brutii, only in this picture, he was carrying a body.
” Do you think the Brutii knows he’s working with the man that killed his best friend? ”
