The Enforcer

Even in the depths of hell, business still thrives. Demons themselves still have a need for items, for objects, for services. Even a loyal Hell Knight does not serve for free. Even if he does not expect money, he still expects compensation for his service. It is an exchange of goods, and where goods are exchanged, there are those who will see an opportunity, and begin preparing and creating goods to be exchanged. Thus it was that a group of demons who did just this, specializing in everything from weapons and armors, to potions, plagues, and enchantments banded together to combine profits and better organize business, trade and opportunity. Five hell based 'corporations' that formed a unifying organization. The Pendaghast Consortium.

Naturally every business has employees, and a Consortium of five even more so. The Consortium itself employs specific employees meant for universal use across the five companies, one of the most important roles being the Enforcer. Doubling as both the muscle needed to keep other demons and wayward holy warriors in line, and representatives in business dealings, most of those who wish to do business with the Consortium will do so via an Enforcer. In this regard Akateko is one of the Consortium's very best agents. She is professional, brisk and polite, able to handily deal with even the most troublesome and irritable demons she might have to deal with. Yet she is also powerful, skilled and intelligent, giving her a handy grasp of battle, one that has carried her through numerous engagements on behalf of the Consortium.

Yasha

The Yasha are a rather odd species of Demon. Often confused with Oni or Asura, they are a type of demon that seems to be geared entirely for battle, fighting and conflict. Their skin comes in a variety of colors, usually bright, ranging from white, to red, to blue, yellow and even green. Their hair is usually spiked in some fashion and they often have some form of horn or horns. As one can tell simply by looking at her, Akateko has white-blue hair, with vibrant red skin and a single, long straight horn upon her head. With her species also comes a gift of great power. Most Yasha are born with a good deal of strength natural to them, fitting with their roles as warriors. However, if one were to take an old, seasoned Yasha and compare their power to when they were born, there are good odds that one wouldn't exactly see a very dramatic increase in power. Some Yasha can take tens of thousands of years just to double the power they were born with.

This is because of another of the traits inherent to a Yasha. When in battle, a Yasha's blood sings. Their soul soars as the song of battle calls to them, their heart beating in time to the drums of war. In more practical terms, the very act of fighting causes their body to generate more power, more energy. They're like a perpetual motion machine, ever powering themselves, and the longer the fight, the harder they fight, the more power, the more energy their soul starts to produce to try to compensate and keep up with the demands of war, that the Yasha may keep fighting as long as needed. In simple terms, a Yasha almost never runs short of energy, and weakening a Yasha requires tremendous effort for a result that may well be very, very temporary. Even worse, the Yasha's power may slowly grow, advancing at steady rates, becoming stronger and stronger as the fight goes on. Although most Yasha do not even get to fifty percent before the drawbacks of this become clear.

This power growth through combat is very temporary. It is also based in the 'spirit' rather than the body. A thin line for a demon but one that does technically exist. Their physical form does not develop with this increase in power. Unlike transformations or specialized techniques, this power growth is independent of the body, and thus it is quite possible for the Yasha's power to grow to a point that their body simply cannot handle it. As a Yasha grows in power across the course of the fight, their attacks will get larger, more powerful, more grandiose. While this can in part be explained by them slowly growing more intoxicated by the battle itself, in truth they are trying to vent as much of their growing power as they can. When a Yasha reaches the point where their soul is generating more power than their physical form can handle, this power will vent itself through the simplest means. Heat.

Without an outlet through battle, the Yasha will find their growing power generating intense amounts of heat in their body. Intense amounts, to the point where even a Yasha with heat resistance will find their physical form being slowly cooked alive from the inside out. This results in damage independent of their foe, and will eventually lead the Yasha to collapse, or at least rendered unable to move as the heat simply overwhelms them. A phenomenon simply named, Overheat.

Thus do we arrive at the crux of a Yasha's issue. In order to improve and grow in power, a fighter should push themselves. Either in fights, spars, or physical training the exercise should tax the body. It should leave one panting, there should be a dull, comforting ache of a hard work out. A yasha, due to the rate at which they replenish energy, must push themselves to the very edge just to feel the same ache, and actually receive any worthwhile benefit from a fight or exercise. This naturally thus puts them at the risk of increasing their power to the point where burnout looms overhead, and burnout can have very long lasting consequences.

Thus, most Yasha gain power slowly, often in fits and starts as proper battles with genuine enemies push them to that limit. Leaving them in a state where once they recover, they were pushed far enough to actually receive a benefit, the body and soul improved, and not just in a temporary way. For Akateko Himura, the risk of Burnout and the slow accretion of power led her to research very different means of power and strength.

Runes, Dragonflies, and Scrimshaw

While Akateko is an accomplished and talented warrior, skilled in hand to hand, trained in a variety of weapons and with a fine ki control. She long ago delved into the works of magic. Specifically runic works. Akateko has spent millennia studying the various languages of runic magic. Symbols, languages, grammar and sentence structure. The way the symbols and strokes flow together to create complex, powerful feats of magic. Rune based magics can indeed be very powerful, and do just about anything ,but they ever require preparation. Runes can be inscribed on the fly, but such quick runes often don't have the power of runes carefully prepared, charged and inscribed upon objects. Yet, even with capsules or other means one could only carry so many and managing and cycling between them all can become complicated and complex. Which is why Akateko carries only one rune inscribed object, and has the rest of the runes used upon herself.

Ever improving, and ever striving to find a way around the Rune 'quick cast' problem, Akateko stumbled upon the solution while consulting with a group of demonic surgeons. These surgeons specialized in flaying flesh from bone, utilizing the fact that a soul could not die, already being dead, to perform dissections, vivisections and surgeries that would simply not be possible. It was while seeing the skeleton completely bereft of flesh, the muscles, skin and organs hung above it, that a thought occurred. Why not carve the runes directly into the skeleton? Careful planning was made afterwards. Five years of careful work, using multiple dummy skeletons and going through a number of designs that got scrapped, reworked, scrapped and reworked again, before she settled upon what she wanted. Then there was nothing to do but see the surgeons, have her flesh temporarily flayed from bone, and her bone decorated with runes of great power and magic, turning her entire body into an impressive magical conduit, nearly as impressive a work of Runes as her primary weapon.

  • The Skull
Akateko's skull is divided into two 'paragraphs' of runes. One half imbues her eyes with True Sight, making it highly difficult to fool her with illusions and letting her see and observe many things. The second paragraph imbues her with an addition to beams fired from her eyes, giving her the ability to drastically and suddenly change the angle. It lets her fire vector lasers in simpler terms.
  • The Ribs
Her ribs are each covered with different layers of defensive runic sentences. Each pair of ribs have similar runes, tied together to increase the defensive power. One pair is devoted entirely to heat and fire resistance. Enabling her body to reach a boosted 75% before Burnout can strike her. Other resistances are to blunt trauma, slashing, electricity, puncture, and so on. The focus of the Scrimshaw here is to boost her defenses.
  • The Left Arm
Akateko's Left Arm shares a very strong similarity with her right. From elbow to shoulder the bone is inscribed with Runes of Power, literally. These runes produce a constant flux and flow of energy and power. Not something she can use to boost her ki, but it can be used to power other runes. Carefully carved channels lead down to the bones of her lower arm and hand, powering a complex series of paragraphs that grant her left hand the power of Telekinesis. Manipulating objects from a distance, when exercising more strength a red aura can appear around that she's trying to grab, move or throw.
  • The Right Arm
Much like the left, from shoulder to bicep, the bone there is covered in a complex pattern of runes of Power and channels that direct the energy they produce down to her forearm and hand. Unlike the Left Arm, the Right has no powers of telekinesis. Rather its scripts are designed to let Akateko channel Force, for the casting of various Force Spells. Wall of Force, Force Shield, Force Claws, and on and on. It is far more geared to offense or defense, compared to the wider array of utilities telekinesis can perform.
  • The Thigh Bones
Akateko's femurs are a paired set of runes. One of the more complicated sets, the runes upon the femurs allow Akateko to 'jump' short distances. It is in essence short ranged teleportation. There is a streaking blur, like a line of light connecting the points, showing Akateko's path briefly. It is not quite instantaneous, but it is very, very close, and allows a bit more control of her position than teleportation. It has an effective range of twenty five meters.
  • The Calves and Feet
Below the knees, the runes take on a drastically different shift from those inscribed upon her femurs. This interconnected web enhance several things. They increase her balance, letting her move freely around even on the toes of one foot, swinging and rounding one leg around in powerful kicks that seem to defy positioning. They also increase her agility. As long as flight is focused on her feet, she can more quickly shift directions and maneuver herself in the air. Very simple enchantments to be sure, but valuable ones.
  • The Spine
Her Spine is the greatest work upon her skeleton, the most delicate, and the most powerful. A chain of scripts and sentences that form into an effect she has named 'Chrono Phantasma.' This affect, in simplest terms, freezes time around Akateko for several seconds. A very brief period of time in which she can move freely while everything else is frozen. She can run, deliver attacks, prepare spells, inscribe runes. Whatever she wants as long as she can do it in the time period, at which point everything snaps back into motion. Alas, this cannot be used freely. At best, this can be used once every six hours, although this puts a terrible strain on Akateko's body. Ideally it shouldn't be used more than once every twenty four hours for optimal safety, but if used right, can be the tool to win the fight.

Her Scrimshaw is the primary focus of her martial arts and combat. Especially her arms and legs, the agility, the balance, and the power of Force and Telekinesis have long formed the backbone of her unique fighting style. Yet as impressive and one of a kind as her self inflicted Scrimshaw is, there is one thing she has that may surpass it in quality and care. That being her weapon, Tonbokiri. Named after an old, legendary spear, said to be so sharp that when a dragonfly landed on it, it was immediately cut in two. Her version though does not resemble a spear at first. It is a five foot rod, made of sleek, shiny black stone. The staff has a slightly segmented look on close inspection, that is because the staff itself is made up of sixty one inch thick black discs. While one would find it incredibly difficult to separate them without Akateko's permission, they are nonetheless detachable.

Each disc has four runes inscribed upon it, equidistant from each other. Each segment cannot only be attached and detached at Akateko's will, but manipulated through the air independently. She can turn this one five foot rod into two, two and a half, or have it 'break' but stay connected, forming long nunchaku, or a Three-section staff. It's ability to maneuver into the air, detach and reattach segments to change shape, length and so forth already makes it a dangerous, capable weapon, yet there is more. Upon the flat of each disc, on both sides, is a single rune. This rune, when activated, creates a powerful, high pressure jet of super heated plasma. This is why the staff was named Tonbokiri, for if Akateko keeps it intact and fires from only one end of the spear, it looks like she is holding a black spear, with the blade formed of liquid fire. These jets can be controlled, length, intensity, etc. She can fire great sweeping waves of plasma, or hold it back for strong attacks. The blade though, is not fully solid, and is not good for physical clashes. The staff itself must make contact for an actual 'solid to solid' interaction. Objects will usually pass through the actual plasma as if passing through water.
