Mine, the egg is rocking, Malaikath informed Jahzara. The girl snagged her bag of meat scraps that she had been holding on to, waiting for the day the little one hatched. "That's it, little one," She said sitting by the egg and encouraging the flit to emerge with her soft words. The egg was rocking still, and finally a good sized crack appeared across the shell, and Jahzara could see part of the egg push forward as the flit tried to come out, and then fall flat again as he couldn't find the strength to get through the membrane. "Push little one, push," Jahzara said getting a meat scrap ready for the little guy once he had made it past the obstacle of his shell. With another sharp push, a small opening in the egg appeared where some of the shell had fallen away. And then, the shell burst in every direction revealing a milky brown flit. He nuzzled Jahzara, and then immediately dove into the meat scraps. At least he is a polite little cousin, Malaikath said. "He is lovely," Jahzara said. "What shall we call you, my little friend?" She asked aloud. An old word from her home country sprung into her thoughts, and she knew that the name was perfect. "Little Rafiki," She said. "Meaning Little Friend." I like that, Malaikath said. Jahzara reached out to stroke Little Rafiki's eye ridge, and quick as lightening, the milky brown slipped her African beaded bracelet off her wrist and began to run around with it flapping his wings and trying to fly. "Hey! Little Rafiki, give that back!" Jahzara said lunging for him and missing. Little Rafiki looked at the girl sprawled on the floor, and with a sweet coo, he gave her the bracelet back and curled up next to her for a quick nap. |
