The scene opens in the Dupree household in Shediac, New Brunswick. The sun hasn’t even risen yet, so the room is dark. The door opens and Emile Dupree yells at Rene to get up. Rene jumps up. It’s 5am! 6am is my normal time. A perfect time to wake up. After the way you’ve been going, you need all the time you can get. Rene gets out of bed, groggily. He is wearing a regular white t-shirt and the pyjama pants with the Frenchmen holding a French flag that looks like clip-art, the same pyjama he was wearing when he sent the tape to the EBWF prior to the People’s Championship match. Rene goes to get changed, but his father tells him to get downstairs and forget changing. Rene goes downstairs. The scene reopens in the kitchen. Rene is eating some bacon, two eggs, a sausage, and a slice of bread, with a glass of orange juice. You have a big day ahead of you. No son of mine loses as much as you. Your brother may not have been the greatest wrestler, so he became an excellent trainer. You’re a great wrestler, and I’ll make sure you show it. Once Rene is done breakfast, his father gets him to stretch for the next hour in the basement. Between each different stretch, he has to do thirty push-ups and thirty sit-ups. After the last set of sit-ups, Rene breathes heavily while on the floor. Stu Hart wouldn’t put up with this. Just because you don’t live in Calgary doesn’t mean you’re getting a free pass. Get up! Rene gets up. Emile tells him they’re going outside. The sun is now just finally coming up over the horizon. Emile tells Rene to run to the corner and back. The corner is only thirty metres away, so it doesn’t take too long, 20 seconds tops. Rene gets back and his father tells him to do it again, right away. Rene gets back, and is told again. His father tells him one at a time, so that Rene doesn’t pace himself over the entire run. Rene gets back, and his father tells him to do it one more time faster, because it’s his last. Rene does it again, gets back, only to be told he wasn’t quick enough and to do it again. This goes on for thirty minutes, and Rene is dead tired. His father throws him a waterbottle. The rest of the day is all fitness and working out. Rene does a lot more running, lifts weights, using the various machines in the gym nearby, working all his body, head to toe. This is a lot more vigorous than Rene is used to, as Rene complains for a lot of the time. Finally, it’s dinner time. His mom cooked a big meal for the family. Even though he doesn’t live at home either, Rene’s older brother Jeff is there, as he was invited by his father to help his brother, and no older brother would pass up watching his younger brother fail, and helping in that failure. Paula Dupree: So Rene, how was your first day with your father? Rene Dupree: It was horrible. He made me stretch, do push-ups, sit-ups, run hard, work-out, run some more. What about wrestling? I thought I was supposed to be a better wrestler. Emile Dupree: Rene, you can’t even run for thirty minutes, no wonder you’re losing matches. I’m going to get you back on the right track. Jeff Dupree: Wow, Rene. You were the standout wrestler of the family, but it looks like I’m going to take over, and I’m a trainer more than an active wrestler. I teach the basics and some advanced stuff. I’ve never tried to work on a 900 degree flip off the top rope into a reverse DDT like those guys in the indy feds, but I can tell when someone has the potential to be something and someone who doesn’t. You always had that potential, but today, you’re just, well, horrible. Me, horrible? I’ve held more championship belts than you can ever imagine. Where are they now? If you were so good, you’d be People’s Champion. Alex Shelley is good, but he isn’t great. If he was, he would be World Champ. I can understand losing to Christian, but that was your first title loss. He was a real loss, someone you could be proud to lose to. Since then, it’s been all downhill. Downhill? I was just Hardcore Champion, did you not notice? Homicide choked me out to beat me. Look at Vampiro. He was choking, so he quit. I didn’t quit in my match against Homicide until I couldn’t breathe. Well, you quit in your People’s Championship match. Easier than you said you would. He’s right son. You said you could last, you obviously couldn’t. That was barbed wire against my face and body multiple times. I thought you were hardcore. Homicide didn’t get off that easy. Jeff, I’ve heard enough. How about we settle this, right now. After dinner. Now finish up. I didn’t cook this for it to be wasted. Once everyone finishes supper and everything is cleaned, they go outside in the backyard. The Dupree brothers are standing on the grass, looking at each other, ready to fight. Jeff: No weapons, no dirty stuff, just pin or submission? Sounds good. I’ve got it. If you win, I’ll stop making fun of you. Agreed. The two lock up. After some back and forth action, Rene takes advantage. He beats down his brother pretty badly, with punches and kicks, a few suplexes, the usual. Rene picks up Jeff and hits the Exploder Suplex on him. Rene, however, doesn’t pin Jeff and does the French Tickler dance. This gives Jeff enough time to roll around and pull Rene down by his foot and lock in an STF. Rene, after about a minute in the move, taps out. Jeff gets up and looks at his younger brother. You tapped out bro. And once again, you lost the big one. Some wrestling standout you are. No wonder you keep losing. Rene, go to sleep. Tomorrow, you’re mine, because if you can’t beat me, there’s no chance you can beat an EBWF champion. The scene ends with Rene still on the ground, lying there, as his family goes inside. |
