“I don’t know, Chris. I really don’t see the point anymore.” It was late Monday evening, and Lance Storm and Chris Jericho were sat having a drink in the bar of the Wyndham Hotel, a few blocks from the Columbus Civic Center where that night’s Warfare show had been held. Despite an impressive performance in his Intercontinental Title match, Lance had come up short against the champion, Randy Orton, and seemed to be suffering from a crisis of faith. Lance Storm: I went undefeated for MONTHS, and now I’ve lost three matches in a row. Okay, Wes screwed us in one of them... but I lost to Randy Orton clean, and before we lost the Tag Titles I lost to The Rock. The Rock, Chris! He’s not even a real wrestler. And now we’ve got to face Ikeda and Shelley? I’m not even enjoying wrestling any more. One of the downsides to being Lance Storm’s friend was that he seemed to have no middle ground between complete optimism and total cynicism. He was almost bipolar in the sense that he was always either on top of the world, or trapped in a cesspit of despair. At that moment, it was the latter, and it was down to Chris Jericho to raise his spirits again. Chris Jericho: Lance, you might have lost to Randy Orton, but you did so with your head held high. In my opinion, your level of performance tonight was up there with the effort you put in at Summerslam. That loss is nothing to be disheartened by, trust me. If you can perform like that in Michigan on Thursday, Wes and Alex won’t stand a chance. Lance did not seem comforted by Lance’s comments; quite the opposite. Lance Storm: Yeah, together you and I are unstoppable – I don’t doubt the awesomeness that is the Thrillseekers. But what happened to the days when I was a force to be reckoned with by myself? I am SICK of people seeing me as the weak link in our team, but when I lose these singles matches I give the fuckers who doubt me ammunition. As Jericho looked across at his partner, it became clear how much his loss to Randy Orton had hurt him. If the two of them were sat celebrating a victory for Lance, the atmosphere would have been completely different; as it was, Lance looked a broken man. Chris Jericho: It’s two singles losses, Lance... it’s really nothing to beat yourself up over. Maybe you’re a little out of practice; we were such a success as Tag Team Champions, we’ve hardly been wrestling without one another. We both know the notion that I carry this team is a lie – we’re a solid, cohesive unit. And we wouldn’t be nearly as solid a team, were it not for our individual merits. If we’re going to come out on top Thursday, I need you to be at your best. Having you wallow in self-pity just isn’t going to cut it. Jericho flashed Lance his cockiest smile. Lance glared at him. Lance Storm: I hate you. Beneath Lance’s deadpan expression was the tiniest hint of a smile. It was unlikely anyone but Chris would have seen it; but Chris knew Lance better than anyone, and knew his words had affected Lance. They weren’t enough to give Lance’s emotional state a complete turnaround, but they were a start. And Chris still had three days to make Lance happy again. ------------------------------------------------------------ As the days passed by between Warfare and Aggression, Jericho kept a close eye on Lance, taking care to avoid being overbearing. Lance’s happiness seemed to improve steadily, enabling Chris to ease his concerns. A conversation the two men had Thursday afternoon stood out particularly to Jericho as a sign that his partner was on form again. Chris Jericho: So... are you ready? Jericho asked Lance this question as they arrived at the Breslin Center, hours before Aggression was set to start. Lance responded with a scowl. Lance Storm: Never... ever... ask me that again. Jericho’s echoing of DX had been unintentional, and he couldn’t help but laugh. However, upon registering what Lance had said, he decided it was his turn to frown. Chris Jericho: Don’t steal my catchphrases... get your own. Lance Storm: You don’t use it any more, remember? It clashes with your grumpus gimmick. Chris Jericho: ...Is it just me, or is it ironic that when the cameras are on, our roles seem to be reversed – I become the ultra-serious one, and you turn a little more light-hearted? Lance Storm: I like to think of it as me being more entertaining. Your character’s a little Orton-esque at the minute... only less boring, because you have charisma. It was comments like this that damaged Lance’s popularity in the EBWF. People tended to see him as rude; Jericho saw him as a man with a delightfully dry sense of humour. Chris Jericho: I’m not like Orton... I don’t go round punting people into oblivion. Lance coughed something that sounded suspiciously like “Agnes”, and Jericho grinned. This banter was a sure sign that Lance was feeling better. Before Chris could respond, Todd Grisham walked over with a microphone, a cameraman not far behind him. Todd Grisham: Hey guys. Could we get an interview to air on EBWF.net as part of the build-up for the show? Chris looked across at Lance for his thoughts. Storm simply responded with a shrug. Chris Jericho: Sure, Todd. As the cameraman prepared to film them, Jericho turned on his inner “self-righteous honestman”. Todd Grisham: Ladies and gentlemen, I’m stood here with Chris Jericho and Lance Storm, less than five hours away from what is sure to be a thrilling match with Wes Ikeda and Alex Shelley. Chris, before I ask anything else, I think the EBWF fans would like an explanation of your actions Monday night. Jericho looked at Grisham with dismay for a moment before responding. Chris Jericho: Todd, if any of these falsifiers and irritants want to know what drove me to such... drastic action on Warfare, I suggest they look no further than one of my opponents tonight, Wes Ikeda. You see Todd, ultimately Wes was at fault for what happened to his darling sister. Wes brought Nicole onto TV even though it’s clear she belongs behind the scenes, or under the bed-sheets. He then made further mistakes, chief among them costing myself and Lance the EBWF Tag Team Titles just days after we’d set a new record through the length of our reign. I was angry, so I hit him where it hurts. The EBWF has become the host of Wes’ self-gratification, and myself, Lance, Brian and Paul have been working hard to eradicate that. Since Wes is refusing to back down, and using devious tactics to undermine Fed Ex, I decided to take Nicole to... gratify myself. Grisham shook his head, and then continued the interview. Todd Grisham: Don’t you fear retribution on Wes’ part? Eager to get involved, Lance looked up at Chris, silently asking for permission to speak. Jericho tried hard to suppress a smirk as he mimicked Lance’s earlier actions by shrugging uncaringly. Lance acted as though this had not happened then answered Todd’s question. Lance Storm: Sorry... do we strike you as the sort of people who fear ANYTHING? Wes can bring his A game; we’ll still school him. Wes has always hated us; thanks to Fed Ex, we’ve stopped that hatred from holding us back, and if anyone’s going to be seeking retribution it’ll be Chris and I, making up for Wesley’s fast count. Todd Grisham: Okay... well, the stakes are certainly high in this match. If you win, you’ll be given a “money in the bank” shot at the Tag Titles. Will this be your motivation tonight? Chris Jericho: In part, yes... though we need no motivation to beat the blue hell out of Ikeda and Shelley. A rematch clause that works in our favour is only fair; after all, we can all agree that the Tag Titles were stolen from us. After asking a few more questions, Todd thanked Chris and Lance for their time and sent the cameraman off to have the interview published. As the Grisham walked away, Jericho smiled at Lance. He got a smile back, which gave him hope. It looked like Lance was back to his best after all, making Wes Ikeda and Alex Shelley a much more exciting prospect. |
