Maria looked at her reflection in the mirror; she had been for the past ten minutes, just looking nothing else. She felt sick and numb but she couldn’t move, what had come over her? She didn’t know. Maybe it was nerves for her upcoming match against EBWF’s woman’s champ Maryse, but she had never been this nervous before, well not to the point it made her feel sick. Maryse or Frenchie as Maria had taken to calling her had been such a good friend and had been there for her the past few weeks, she didn’t like thinking that Maryse only picked her because they were friends but it was always a possibility and no matter what, that possibility was going to be there to haunt Maria until Destiny. Destiny, what a relevant word. Was it Destiny that brought Maria to EBWF? Was it destiny that led Maria to the people who she now couldn’t live without? Was there even such a thing as Destiny? Who knew? Maybe it was just overrated like everything else seemed to be at the minute. Sliding down to the bathroom floor to stop her shaking legs from collapsing in on her, she wrapped her arms around herself trying to get the warmth and feeling back. She just wanted to get up, shake herself and walk out of the door, feeling happy, excited and refreshed but it would all be fake, from her words to her smile. None of it would be real, just a facade and she would never forgive herself if she did that, pretended to be someone she wasn’t. Maria sat there for what seemed like hours just sitting thinking, before she found the strength to push herself up and walk out of the apartment with her car keys and key card. Soon she was driving to somewhere she hadn’t stepped foot in for at least twenty years. Her body parts were moving, without her even realising but she couldn’t think at the moment at least not properly. A three hour drive and many turns later, Maria stopped the car and let out a breath that she had been holding. Turning her head to the right her eyes laid upon a white house, the picket fence out the front had started to lose its colour and many of the panels were either missing or rusted. The garden was overgrown and full of nettles and thorns but Maria didn’t care as she walked through the garden with ease, reaching the front door. Maria: “One, two, three, skip two bottom left” Maria counted the wooden floorboards and lifted one up and there was the key, rusted but it was still there. Leaning down she gently plucked out the key and carefully put it in the keyhole turning it slowly, pushing the door open. The house was exactly the same, a bit dusty but still the same. Closing the door behind her she walked further into the house where she had grown up in with her mum and Dad. Ever since he mum had died neither Maria nor her father had stepped a foot in the house, but now...well it was time to get that closure and do what she hadn’t been able to do for the last twenty or so years. After walking around the house, and packing some of her mum’s old stuff up, she was making her way back to the hotel. Waiting at a red light she looked at her surroundings, for a minute she let her mind wander again to her match at Destiny. The golden goddess takes on The firefly for the most prestigious title in the EBWF, would Maria beat the reigning champion, or will she have a black rose laid on her chest as a symbol of defeat? A loud beep brought her out of her thought, and she quickly accelerated and pulled in not wanting to cause any more trouble. She didn’t realise that when she had pulled over to take a breather that just a couple of meters in front on the next turn was an old gym that she remembered well from her young years before she had even began to think of wrestling as a career. Lifting her head she glanced at her iphone before she caught sight of the name she had forgotten all about on the signpost. She looked again at her phone, switching it off before pulling back out and turning left. Was it even open? Was it still there? Finally a couple of minutes later she parked and looked up at the gym she loved so much. Maria: “Destiny’s gym” She breathed out. How coincidental, she shook her head and opened the car boot, taking out her duffle bag, slinging it over her shoulder before locking the car and heading in. The receptionist looked up and smiled before looking back down at his work. Maria manourvered her way around the halls before coming to the room, her room. Inside it were a punching bag and a wall of mirrors with a long ballet pole running in front of them. This is where she came every day after school to practice. Dropping her duffle bag she walked along the side running her hand over the bar. Maria: “Hello old friend....long time no see huh” She smiled, patting the bar. Looking up at the mirror she didn’t see herself anymore she saw instead a young girl, seven years old at the most smiling up at her. Maria frowned and looked around but there was nobody there, she looked back at the young girl who still had a wide grin on her face. The young girl then slowly started dancing, moving gracefully across the mirrors, while Maria watched. She remembered this dance, she herself had invented it, but how....how did the girl know it? She looked closer, blue eyes, brown hair clipped back. This was her when she was seven; this was her performing her dance. Was she dreaming? Maybe she had finally gone mad? She walked over and took her iPod out and plugged it into the wall then turned on the speakers. She couldn’t really remember the moves that well and her reflection seemed to sense that because the young girl slowed down and started going through the moves, one step at a time. If you looked in that room an hour later, you would’ve seen a completely different person from this morning. If you looked close enough you could see the happiness and determination shining in Maria’s eyes as she danced. The reflection of the young girl had long ago vanished and now Maria could see herself as she was now, how she was supposed to be. Lying down in the splits she smiled at herself, the first genuine smile in a while. She would carry this feeling through to destiny and beyond, she wasn’t going to go down without a fight not at Destiny, not ever. With a bounce in her step, Maria sat down behind the wheel and drove back to the hotel still with a smile plastered on her face. Lifting her bag and the cardboard box out of the car she walked up the stairs towards her room, opening the door with some difficulty before dropping her duffle bag. She looked down at the box as she walked into her bedroom, setting it down gently on the crinkled duvet; she traced out the words on the top: “For my Maria” Finding a new found confidence she opened the box, slowly taking out its contents. She was doing well until she found a bunch of papers with musical notes and lyrics on them. Maria's trembling hand traced over the notes and words on the paper, she had been sitting staring at it for about 5 minutes now, slowly reading over the words. Tears were rolling down her cheeks as she read the title for the final time. Maria: Maria's Song. The Horizon She needed to hear it, she wanted to hear it, who knew that her mum was a song writer. Picking up her iphone she quickly dialled the number of the person she knew who would sing this, the person she could rely on to be there for her, the person who knew how Maria felt at that moment. The picture of Nikki Ikeda appeared on the screen and Maria without a doubt him the call button putting the phone on loud speaker and setting it on the floor. Nicole Ikeda: Hey girlie. What's up? Maria: ...Nikki, where are you?? Her throat was sore, and her nose was blocked but she tried not to let that show, she just...she just needed to hear it, she just needed to hear her song and see someone who had went through some of the same things as her. She needed Nikki Nicole Ikeda: I'm in my office babe. Are you okay? You don't sound like yourself. Maria: I need you Chica; I really need you right now She sniffled, still holding the pieces of paper in her hand. There was a sense of urgency in Nikki's voice. Nicole Ikeda: Alright, wherever you are. I'm on my way. Where should I come? Maria: The hotel about 20 minutes away from St.Louis airport. Nicole Ikeda: Okay, is that the Airport Hilton out there? Maria: yeah... Nicole Ikeda: Alright, I just need to try to find Randy. He was going to take me to the park. I want to cancel on him to his face, and then I'll be right there. I love you honey. Hang in there. You can tell me all about it when I get there. Maria: hun I didn't realise you going out with Randy, I didn't mean to ruin your day. Nicole Ikeda: We've seen a lot of each other this week. He won't mind. Really, we get to fly to LA together tomorrow. Really, he'll probably be glad to be rid of me. Maria could hear that Nicole had already locked up her things, and was walking out of her office and down the hallway. Maria: I'll.....I'll see you soon then... Nicole Ikeda: Bye hun. I'm on my way. Nikki hung up the phone Maria silently slid her finger over the end call button not once letting go of the pieces of paper, she was afraid if she let them go that they would disappear or rip themselves to shreds. Her hands were slowly falling numb again and the coldness was spreading through her body. Why hadn't her father told her about this? Did he even know that this box was in the house? Did he know that his wife was a song-writer? But Maria's mind just wasn't functioning, all she could do was sit and wait for Nikki, that's all she could do. Nicole called Maria when she was in the lobby and hurried up to her room. As soon as Maria opened the door, Nikki wrapped her in a hug. Nicole Ikeda: I'm here now sweetie. Maria hugged her back letting some of the tears fall, burying her head in Nikki's shoulder. This was probably the first time she had allowed Nikki or another woman see her cry. The last woman to see her cry was Joanie. Nicole Ikeda: Did he break up with you? I'll have Randy punt him. Maria laughed a little shaking her head. Maria: As interesting as that would be, no Drew and I are still pretty much together. Nicole Ikeda: Oh good. She gently guided Maria into the room and shut the door. Nicole Ikeda: What's wrong honey? Maria sat down on the sofa, the paper still in her hands. Maria: I...I don't know exactly. I remember driving to my old house in St.Louis and going in, I haven't set foot in the place for 20 years since mum....since mum died, but something told me to go. So I looked around the house and came across a box labelled to me from.....from......her. Maria wiped at her tears. Maria: Mum....mum wrote me a song...and...........and I was just wondering if you could sing it for me....please...I have to hear it Her shaking hands held out the piece of paper to Nikki, while the tears rolled down her cheeks. Maria: Please Nic....please could you sing it for me..... Nikki clammed up immediately. She couldn't sing in front of anyone. Maybe if Randy were here. Maybe if... she took the paper. No, not Randy. If she showed up with Maria, Randy wouldn't complain, but he wouldn't be happy either. In fact, if Randy trusted himself with a gun, he'd probably use it in such a situation. Nicole Ikeda: I... I don't think I can sing this... not without a piano. Maria nodded her head solemnly. Maria: its fine you don't have to sing it Nic......its fine Nicole Ikeda: No, no I will. Get your things. We're going to go to my house. Maria didn't understand what was happening, but before she knew it she was outside with Nic, with her things. They got into Nicole's Porsche and drove twenty minutes to Town and Country, Missouri. Maria was still holding the hand written sheet music and soon Nicole was using a button to automatically open a huge gate. A short path lead up to one of the biggest houses Maria had ever seen.Maria took a quick glance up at the beautiful house, but her eyes found their way again to the music, and kept themselves there. She was so scared that she would lose them, or they would disappear, she couldn't let that happen. Nikki parked her car and nodded at Maria. She followed her into the back door, and into an immaculate kitchen. Nicole dropped her things on the counter and continued into a pristine foyer. The staircase was beautiful. Wes and Christy had spared no expense, including the black piano that stood gloriously in the centre. Nicole gently took the sheets from Maria, and sat down at the piano bench, opening the cover with shaky hands. Nicole Ikeda: Would you like to sit with me? Maria nodded silently and sat down gently beside Nikki, quickly giving her cheek a kiss. Maria: Thanks Chica Nicole Ikeda: I'm just going to play it through first okay? Then I'll sing it. Maria nodded her head and kept her eyes of the piece of paper sitting in front of her. Maria: Okay Nicole put her fingers to the keys of the well tuned piano. She played it slowly at first, and then found its tempo. The melody filled the house, as Nikki got a feel for the music, keeping her eyes on the notes in front of her.Maria watched Nikki's hands playing the notes, and just listened to the sound of the melody. Nicole Ikeda: Are you... ready to hear it? Maria nodded her head and touched the papers one last time. Maria: Yeah... What can it be that calls me hear? Something I can't quite see Is it only a breeze From a far-away sea Or something that someday may be? Tomorrow begins at the horizon And all your dreams are waiting there Where a golden sun Meets a glowing sea A new day awaits on the horizon Where nothing is impossible Where anything you wish for Can be What's this outside my window here? So much to see, to feel Why does this seem Like the edge of a dream? Can all of this really be real? Just open up your eyes Don't stop to question why If you believe it you will see... Maria placed her hands over Nikki's halting her. Maria: You can stop now Nikki slowly took her hands away from the keys, and gently grabbed Maria's own. Nicole Ikeda: I hope I did it justice. Maria: I couldn't have picked a better person to sing it, Nic. Thank you; it means a lot that you would sing this for me. Nikki stood up and walked out of Maria's sight for a moment, into a sitting room to the right of the front door. She returned with a framed photograph that she put on the top of the piano. Nicole Ikeda: Thanks for letting me get to know your mom. I'd like you to meet mine. Nikki sat back down on the bench.Maria smiled at the picture in front of her. Maria: Hello Mrs.Ikeda She gently ran her finger along the frame careful not to knock it over or smudge the picture. Maria: You have an amazing daughter, but I'm sure you already know that. She's been there for me these past couple of weeks, and I love her very much for it, especially for today. I'm sure your proud of her, I know I am... Nikki wrapped her arm around Maria's waist and hugged her. Nicole Ikeda: You want to eat chocolate ice cream and watch some America's Next Top Model reruns? Maria smiled and nodded her head. Maria: I would like that -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was Sunday and Maria was waiting behind the curtain ready to go out and deliver an in-ring segment, she hadn’t really talked that much in the ring, and ever since she read Wes’ blog, she was determined to prove to him that she wasn’t just here for the fame, and that he should be glad to have her here. Plastering a smiled on her face she waited for her music, as soon as the first beat of “With legs like that” came on she was through the curtain blowing her signature kiss to the crowd. Bouncing down the ramp she slapped a few of the fan’s hands and then proceeded to get into the ring. She smiled and took the microphone handed to her before she waited for the crowd to calm down. Maria: “What’s up all you stars and studs in Los Angeles!!” She smiled slightly and listened to the crowd cheer. Maria: “Thanks for the amazing welcome! Tonight I’m facing off against Maryse for the woman’s championship, how amazing is that! As John Morrison would say....BE JEALOUS! Wait a minute does he still say that? Yes? Yes, okay apparently he still does say that, but anyway back to Maryse. I’ve been practicing my French all day, and I conjured up a little message for you, now I’m still learning but I thought this was pretty good! Okay: “Bonjour Marsie, j'allant au barbecue vous si rapidement que les cochons voleront ! Beaucoup de baisers et embrasse Maria” (Hey Marsie, I going to barbeque you so fast that pigs will fly! Lots of kisses and hugs Maria) Wasn’t that good! I’m going to have to work on my accent a wee bit though. Seriously now Maryse I’m glad you gave me a chance to show you and everyone else what I’m made off.I know I haven't been here as long as some of the veteran divas in this business, Trish, Jillian, Joanie to name a few but I'm determined to join them in the ranks up there and be an amazing woman's champion and a champion to looke up to. I may not be the prettiest, or smartest or the strongest but I do have passion, faith, determination. Yes I may have been with the WWE for the fame, but EBWF means so much more to me than WWE ever will, it's a place where I can call home, a place filled with awesome people. I’m not going down without a fight girlie you can count on that, and if...no wait when I beat you, I think a taste of your own medicine would be nice. White is the opposite of Black isn’t it?” She smiled and produced a white rose from her back and dropped it on the canvas, blowing a kiss. Before climbing up on the turnbuckles and pointing out to the crowd while her music played in the background. That wasn’t too bad, she thought; bring it on French Fries, because my time is now. (Hopefully this was better than my last one, I took into heed what Wes said in his blog and had Maria do an in-ring segment. THanks Ashlee for helping me with the whole Nikki/Maria scene, I really love it, and it turned out really well thanks to you. THere's not that much lovey dovey stuff in this, so no jokes this time. I wish I've could've put some more match focus in, but I'm just bogged down with coursework and stress at the moment that this is all I could manage in my free time, and even that was hard) |
