Reading Tips:

1. Select a appropriate reading text:

Students find reading difficult is because:

* the text has many unknown words

* the text has long and complicated sentences

* the text is about a topic you know nothing about

* the text is about a boring topic

* the text has small print and no pictures

* you are distracted

* you don’t know why you have been asked to read the text

2. How to understand more of what you read:

* know your reading purpose

* choose the appropriate reading speed—skimming, scanning

* get background information

* use all the information in the book—with titles, sub-tiles, introductions, summaries, conclusions, and pictures

* understand the meaning of unknown words by using context clues

* find the cohesion markers—therefore, except, unless, however, instead, on the other hand, as a result, in conclusion

3. What to read:

* try not to read something too difficult

* choose something that is interesting

* try to read some non-fiction

* surf the internet

4. Ways to Think and Talk about Text:

(1). How do we retell the story?

a. Talk about character by name

b. Describe specific traits identified in character

c. Explain the setting using details

d. Explain the plot

(2). How do we understand a text more deeply?

a. Ask questions

b. Make predictions

c. Visualize

d. Make connections

e. Determine very important parts (VIP)

These are great tips for choosing books for our students and helping them understand texts more effectively. These can also be great tips to train our students with, so they are able to chose appropriate texts on their own.

I found your reading tips to be very helpful, and I try to incorporate almost all of them in my teaching strategies. I love to find books that I know will spark interest within my students. This leads to greater retention than a topic they have no interest in.

It is so important to equip our students with the knowledge of how to utilize these strategies when reading. When they understand the purpose for their reading, then they are more likely to have a greater comprehension.

My comment was: I think the strategies listed were great ideas. I typically use photos to build background for unknown vocabulary words because it is usually the quickest way to get across. My goal is try to incorporate other activities and weave them into guided reading, which our school's ESOL teachers are focusing on this year. I have been bringing in realia more often as well.
