ORDO SEPULTURUM

Alistair Varro
Ordo Sepulturum
Now the past must unveil one of its darkest secrets, the story of the Curse of Unbelief and its most hideous vector Ibrim Kain, the false Son of Sanguinius. Never has the Imperium endured such a crisis of faith, not since the dark days of the Horus Heresy itself.

It was on the blasted surface of Cadia during the 13th Black Crusade that the Ordo Sepulturum, an Ordo Minoris of the Holy Orders of the Inquisition, was born. As Abaddon's warfleet scourged the Cadian Gate, outbreaks of a zombie-like plague began to break out. The diseased were tenacious, only faltering if burned or dismembered. Inquisitor Aghastri, formerly of the Ordo Malleus, formed this new task force as a means to study the Zombie Plague. While Aghastri studies the outbreak on Cadia, Inquisitor Alistair Varro of the same order was assigned to Fortis Castum: the site of a secondary outbreak. Fortis Castrum, a major resupply port and drydock, was presently under siege by an Emperor's Children warband and an expeditionary force of Tau when Varro arrived. To the dismay of the Imperials, the Ruinous Powers were successful in achieving their goal of capturing a relic worthy of the traitor Fulgrim's praise so they might join him in his revelries. The forces of the Great Enemy then fled to their next task, leaving Fortis in anarchy.

No sooner had the Forces of Disorder left that they had returned. A coterie of fallen Blood Angels and Nurgle's chosen known as the Clotted Heart arrived in force on Fortis Castrum, seeking a relic of great power, with their enigmatic overlord Ibrim Kane believing it to be the Anatheme that felled Horus ten thousand years ago. Varro, in light of this development, put down his research and assumed the defense of the planet. Reinforcements were called, most notably the 514th Siege Regiment of the Death Korps of Krieg. Their endless waves of manpower, ammunition, and iron discipline would surely help in fortifying Fortis, but their inclusion served a secondary purpose. With their classic rebreathers and devotion, Varro intends to capture Plague Zombies for study in the hopes of discerning the nature of the disease so that it may be blocked from spreading beyond Fortis. Irregardless of Varro's intentions, the Inquisitor now attends to Fortis Castrum's defense against the Great Enemy and all manner of Xenos willing to capitalize on the sector's weakness.

INQUISITOR ALISTAIR VARRO

To the Imperial citizens of Fortis Castrum, Alistair Varro is seen as an inspiring hero. A man that laid down his duties in the Inquisition to take command of a besieged world and rescue it from the evils plaguing it. The average person knows him as the Daemonhammer; a man bringing up a mighty warhammer and laying judgement upon the Ruinous Powers. In truth, this is merely a convenient narrative spun by Varro and his acolytes to further their objective: to study the Curse of Unbelief, unravel it's secrets, and turn it to the Imperium's benefit. Originally an acolyte in the Ordo Malleus, Varro was given his own inquisitorial rank at the creation of the Ordo Sepulturum when the 13th Black Crusade hit Cadia. His studious mind was seen as an asset and Varro was dispatched to Fortis Castrum where the Inquisition believed a secondary outbreak of the Zombie Plague had taken root. It was a textbook move to assume command of Fortis' defense in order to create an environment appropriate for his research. Fortis Castrum's recovery or fall ultimately means nothing to him or his superiors despite its strategic importance.

Varro is a Xanthite Inquisitor apart of the vast Illuminati conspiracy within the Imperium. Xanthites believe that Chaos is a mirror of humanity and cannot be destroyed; it will exist in this form as long as humans rule the stars. Chaos should be harnessed as a tool, such as a sword or a wrench is a tool. While Xanthites do not pledge fealty to the Ruinous Powers in any regard, many Inquisitors in other orders believe that they are on the precipice of corruption and should be curtailed or even destroyed. Xanthites look to the traitor Primarch Horus and see him as a model, less the pact he made with the Gods of Chaos. A figure like Horus who could harness daemonic artifacts and energies while remaining loyal could be exactly what the Imperium needs to survive. Some see this sort of idealistic Horus-esque figure as a 'Second Emperor' and ultimately a replacement for the God-Emperor Himself. Varro's enrollment in the Illuminati only fuels this goal, as members often invite daemonic possession in order to harness their power in search for the God-Emperor's supposed sons.

The ultimately goal of the Ordo Sepulturum on Fortis is to debunk the Zombie Plague. It is believed by the Inquisition that the arcane of the Golden Throne and the manifestation of the Zombie Plague are related in some regard. Perhaps, if the secrets of the Curse can be known, it could be harnessed for the Imperium or perhaps even stall or reverse the God-Emperor's seemingly inevitable death. Varro seeks subjects, infected and not infected, to study the course of the Zombie Plague and it's limitations. Should Varro succeed, he would undoubtedly be counted among the Imperium's heroes and perhaps even it's savior. What is known is that he has an insurmountable task ahead of him, especially with the arrival of the Clotted Heart warband and the imminent arrival of a Necron tomb-fleet.
