We're halfway through the 2016 fantasy season and before things start to really heat up I'll fill the league in on some points in need of mentioning.

Tanking

We haven't had issues with this at all in the league, but I want to set up a reminder. It is against the rules of the league to lose games on purpose. Setting lineups that do not have a chance at winning with the intention of claiming a higher draft pick is not allowed. The punishment for this is to simply take away the offender's first round draft pick. So there's no point because your reward will be gone! Having no chance of winning can be interpreted in many ways, but here is how I see it: you cannot activate players which do not have significant or starting roles on their respective NFL teams. You certainly can't play injured players knowingly, or players that only see 5 snaps a game, or things of this nature. For reference, let's consider my team. If I was losing badly and ready to throw in the towel, it would not be acceptable to bench Mike Evans for Malcolm Mitchell (who doesn't start for the Patriots and catches more than one ball a week if he's lucky). It would be questionable, but probably acceptable, if I benched Jordy Nelson for Tyler Lockett, since he has a starting role on the offense and returns kicks. Breshard Perriman, who averages 30 yards a game and hasn't scored, would be a much harder sell. I could, however, start Marcus Mariota over Andrew Luck. Bonus points if you do something like this and then role play your reasoning, like "With the playoffs out of reach, we want to start our young QB and see what we have in him before training camp comes around next year."

I wouldn't recommend picking up players from waivers that barely meet the activity requirements in order to tank either. Play your guys and avoid the trouble. Like I said, however, this isn't an issue with our league! Well done lads

Value Committees

This applies to Nick Johnson and Tyler Ocheltree, but may also be relevant to anyone who is considering joining the Value Committee. As a reminder, we're re-working contract extensions in a way that matches players with what the league considers to be their approximate $ worth. To do this, the Value Committee will rank WR/RBs from 1-50 (other positions 1-20 or so), and the rank of the player will be averaged between all committee members and matched with an appropriate $ value for contract extensions. Rankings will consider a player's value from a dynasty perspective - how valuable is this player in the next year? 3, 5, 8 years? The best players will be valuable in the near and far future, but exceptional players (like Brady at 37 years old) may still hold value as high as young players at the position.

Nick and Tyler, I would recommend getting your ranks started up in the coming weeks before fantasy football ends for the year. Go ahead and start with your top 20 guys and add to/edit the list as the weeks go by. At the end of the NFL season, all members of the Value Committee will submit their initial rankings. Then, before June, the Committee will edit their old ranks to be up-to-date before the contract extension period opens. If you want to join this committee and have a say in ranking player values IN AN UNBIASED MANNER, contact me before the season ends!

12-Team League: New Owners Incoming

The league is officially moving on up to a 12-team league next year! I'm personally excited for this, as I have never been in a 12-team league (but have tried 14 and 16 teams). Two potential owners have been offered an invitation to join the league, and I know you guys will be excited to see them here. One owner, who has committed to joining the league already, will be familiar to our fantasy group. The other, who is considering joining the league (and I truly hope they accept), is completely new to fantasy and has expressed interest in our league. All of you with the exception of Peter will be very familiar with the former Fallbrook High alumnus! I'll make the official announcement when both have committed; until then feel free to guess at who the new recruits could be.

Here's a sense of what to expect regarding 12 teams. With two more teams joining that will be making their roster ENTIRELY OF FREE AGENTS and rookies (no expansion draft woo), expect between 30 and 40 players currently signed to rosters or on waivers to shift to the new teams. This means that potentially 3-4 players on your roster right now may be headed to a new team next year. Plan ahead when considering roster depth. In addition to this, consider the fact that since only free agents will make up the new teams' roster, you need to lock up any players you really want that require a contract extension before free agency of next year (this means players with 0 years left on their contracts as listed on the google spreadsheet). Most years, if a player wants too much money in a contract extension, you can always take the gamble that it will cost less to sign them in free agency. THIS WILL PROBABLY NOT HAPPEN this year, especially considering the new teams will have a full $104 to throw at free agents. If you really can't stand losing them, you need to be prepared to pay them what they ask for come May/June of next year.

Trade Deadline

We're a few weeks out from the trade deadline which is slated to hit after week 10. The FBK's own reporter Adam Schlefterberg is hearing whispers of trade talk between half the league's owners already! Looking forward to seeing if this year's deadline leads to some roster moves.

6 Point Passing Touchdowns

As I have already discussed previously, the league looks locked in to increase passing touchdown points from 4 to 6 next year. I will continue to update you all on the data showing increasing QB disparity as a result of the rule change towards the end of the year.

THE BIG ONE - POTENTIAL ROSTER POSITION CHANGES

The league currently employs standard roster position rules for starting lineups. Each team starts 2 WR, 2RB, 1 TE, and can flex one of any position from those three. This format is fine for most standard formats. It does, however, limit creativity in team building for both the short and long term. Perhaps it would be more fitting to give teams the option to get away from this concrete roster lineup in a dynasty setting. Certainly, it would at the very least fit with the league vision [read: be more like a real league] if owners were able to choose just how many WRs and RBs they get into the gameplan for a given week. Some teams favor 3 and 4 WR sets, while others roll with a RB-by-committee ground approach, while some are getting 2 TE's into almost every play. I have discussed this idea with various league owners and know there is great interest in the following rule change proposal. Each week, teams are required to start only ONE of each of the WR, RB, and TE positions. Beyond the required one player from each position, owners will have more flexibility in filling out the remaining starting slots with whomever they choose.

Here's how it would look for the roster slots:
Old
2 of: WR only
2 of: RB only
1 of: TE only
1 of: WR, RB, TE

New
1 of: WR only
1 of: RB only
1 of: TE only
2 of: WR, RB
1 of: WR, TE

With the proposed changes, you could actually start 4 WRs in any given week, which fits with the league vision since many NFL teams are getting 4 WRs out on the field at the same time. This also means you could start only a single, work-horse RB or even WR in any given week. In most cases, however, lineups would remain completely unchanged with how we've done it so far. You're still likely to start at least two RBs and WRs most weeks. Whats great about the proposed changes is the ability for owners to commit to a certain scheme long-term, and yet just as easily switch to a new scheme the next year. This gives owners full control of their roster and starting positions. Why should the league tell you that you cannot lean on a single RB? Who doesn't love a good 1 WR/3 RB/2 TE play formation?

PLEASE comment here with any concerns, suggestions, or praise for this potentially big change. Let the league know if you're for or against it by commenting and voting on the poll above.

Good luck with the remainder of your season!

Another feature I forgot to mention. I've been thinking of ways to make the league just slightly more competitive and intense. In our money league, every week is a potential bloodbath and the discussion/trash talk is great. I don't think this is entirely because of the potential money - this league has been around for over 5 years and the history is what makes people really get into it I think. In time the same will happen to our league as well. Additionally, it doesn't make sense to put down a lot of money on this league since there will be lots more team variability in terms of competitiveness to start off each year. So if the reward shouldn't mainly be a cash prize every year, what should the dynasty version of this be?

Introducing a new potential feature: DYNASTY POT (can anyone think of a better name?)

Each year, teams pay a small league fee. I think this fee shouldn't be more than a lunch at Denny's or some shit; $10 seems reasonable, relatively inexpensive, and serves the purpose. With 12 incoming teams, the $120 will be divided as follows:

$30 - Champion
$30 - League Champion pint glass and banner
$60 - goes into the Dynasty Pot

Each year, $60 is stored in the Dynasty Pot, which accumulates over the years. When a team wins two consecutive championships, they win whatever amount is in the Dynasty Pot. The following year, we start over - a team must again win two years in a row (even if the previous champ wins again, they'll still need to win twice in a row when a new pot has been made). The minimum earnings for the pot would obviously be $120 if some lucky team were to win the first two years of a new pot. Think about it...for a reasonably priced meal entry fee, you could have a shot at $300 five years down the road!

Alternatively, we could forego individual championship cash prizes ($30) and throw that into the pot as well (for a total of $90 per year).

Let me know what you think about these options!
