The Guardian of Hope

"The other night, I had experienced a revelation of a concept that had become foreign to me for years: hope. The only way for me to welcome it back is if I move forward to find it once more. I need to pursue what had shown me hope to begin with, so I make this vow now: I will never return home until I have conquered the magical arts under my full control, for I wish not to fail you all again. I'm sorry, but this may be goodbye for a long time."

Personality: Having lived in near seclusion and with little support throughout her childhood, Ilyana grew up to keep to herself. Throughout her life, she focused most on her self-improvement in hope that she could no longer feel useless. Upon meeting other mages with superior strength, she looked up to them as a goal for herself to reach, but she felt it reminded herself of her own weakness in the process of doing so, acting like a double edged blade. The presence of an ally or a friend helped her confidence in herself grow, even if she never confided with them about her internal struggle; however, she would feel nervous if she was alone with a stranger, making her have to warm up to them before feeling comfortable around them. As an activity, Ilyana enjoyed reading and writing. She studied about the world, learning a lot about it and becoming book-smart, while her writing was a way for her to feel solace.

History: Up in the northern hemisphere near the pole, there was a small village in the snow mountains known as No'rah, which was where Ilyana was born. The location of the village made it a rather cold place to be at certain times of the year, but the inhabitants grew used to the extreme temperatures their home offered. It received a lot of its supplies from overseas trading; meanwhile, they grew crops that could withstand the harsh winters, including medical herbs, and traded them in return for the supplies. It was a working system for them, and the people were able to live in peace without a lot of need to leave their quiet, little mountain town.

Ilyana's mother was Ameria, wife of Cyran. In the village, Ameria was known as the head cleric. Whenever someone became wounded for various reasons, she was able to heal them again using their herbs and staves; however, her position came at a great cost. While she loved her daughter with all her heart, Ameria chose to keep a watchful eye over anyone wounded, causing her to not be home often. Without her, Ilyana didn't have a mother figure to comfort her through her childhood, but Ilyana still found her mother to be inspiring for how hard working she was.

One moment that had affected Ilyana's fate and made her determined to pursue the same path as her mother was an event that took place outside of the village. Wanting to enjoy the outdoors, she had walked along the side of a mountain. It wasn't long into the walk when she found herself stopped in her tracks: a man's seemingly lifeless body was laying flat on the ground as if he had fallen. For a few seconds, Ilyana stared in breathless horror at the familiar boy before finally coming to her senses. After feeling a faint pulse on him, the girl tried her best to guide the man back to the village by dragging him across the ground. When she was close enough to the village, she yelled for help. Eventually, the boy was safely in the care of her mother. Time passed and, eventually, he had been able to leave. He did not recognize Ilyana for having saved him from his fate, but the girl didn't care. She had saved a life.

Having a dream to one day take up the same position as her mother, Ilyana asked Ameria at every opportunity she was available about help with learning medicine and healing. Sadly, the little intervals her mother had were not enough for Ilyana to truly grasp being able to use a stave, the most important part of healing effectively. Her mother offered gentle support to her daughter, but it was not enough to truly get to Ilyana. A lot of words went through one ear of Ilyana and out the other as she focused more on trying to be able to be as successful as her mother was.

As an idea that may potentially offer Ilyana aid to being able to properly use staves, she decided to take up practicing magic. She met with a scholar who had dedicated his life to his studies and the magical arts. He was one of the few mages in the village, and the only one Ilyana thought could teach her how to wield the mystical force. Knowing Ilyana's mother, who had helped him heal from a grievous wound in the past, the elder decided to accept Ilyana's request. For a few years, he taught Ilyana to the best of his ability. He noted how it appeared she excelled best in wind-related magic over the other types.

The training did not last forever. Although the elder at first saw the potential in Ilyana, it slowly diminished as she showed very slow signs of improving compared to other mages. He felt as if she was wasting his time, so one day he decided that it was time. After a session with Ilyana, he confronted her and revealed to her his opinion about her future as a mage: terrible. The sudden news struck Ilyana hard. Taking it to heart, she departed her old teacher's estate with great sorrow buried in her chest. At the time, she began to ponder whether she was simply unable to become as good of a healer as her mother if she truly was flawed when it came to using magic.

Despite the great effect it had on her, this was not the event that finally pushed her over the edge. Instead, it was while she was with her mother. On a stressful day for Ameria, she was trying to heal a multitude of others after an accident in the mountains that involved multiple villagers to be injured. Eager to aid her mother in her time of need, Ilyana tried her best to do what she could; however, Ilyana found that she could do little. It was only when she almost applied the wrong medicine to one of the injured when her mother finally snapped at her, telling her daughter that she was getting in the way and that she needed space to be able to help the others. After a brief moment of shock, Ilyana walked out of the area with her head down, not hearing her mother call out behind her before being forced back to trying to help mend the wounds.

Later that day, Ilyana could feel the breeze stronger than after before as it pushed against her. Never before had she seen the village from the height she was standing at. As she looked down at it, she took in deep, frequent breaths before her gaze shifted down toward the distant ground below, taking in how long of a drop it was. A sigh escaped her lips before she looked back up above at the distant horizon. The girl was about to close her eyes when, briefly, she noticed something soaring through the sky. They opened again as her pupils glued to the silhouette. The bird soared across the sky as it glided itself toward the village below. Ilyana considered the bird for a few moments, pondering questions about it: How did it fly? Why was it here? Where was its final destination? For what felt like hours, Ilyana pondered the question before coming up with a singular solution that answered each question. In an eerie silence, the future mage stepped away from the cliffside.

The following morning, Ilyana stood at the docks of No'rah. She had planned to leave on one of the arriving boats without mention of it to anyone, but she found herself caught by a few of the villagers, questioning her as to why she was leaving. Soon, even her parents caught wind of what was going down and arrived at the scene, asking the same questions. Ilyana had chosen to keep the events that had transpired the previous days to herself, but she told the familiar faces one thing: a promise. With the promise being her goodbye, Ilyana boarded one of the boats and sailed away to the continent she only knew of in her literature.

Asset:
  • Knowledgeable: With all of her studies, Ilyana was very knowledgeable about multiple situations, allowing her to have had a good understanding of topics and events in the world with little explanation required.
  • Charitable: Ilyana was very generous and kind to those she called her allies. She was also considerate to strangers if she felt sympathetic toward their cause.
  • Tactful Leader: While Ilyana did not have the heart or the morale of a natural-born leader, her mind allowed her to be very tactful and organized, making her a good assistant or tactician.

Flaw:
  • Diffident: Despite what others may have thought, Ilyana commonly thought down on herself and believed she had to keep improving because she wasn't good enough.
  • Coy: In social situations and if Ilyana was alone with people she did not know, she was shy and hesitant around them until she grew used to them.
