My warmest regards to you, Mr. Chimes for this generous invitation. I am delighted to be here tonight among such distinguished company. You already know me, of course, Sidney Sunbearer, grant holder at the Benthic College, author of 'The stray Fluke and the mesmerizing tale of the Swollen Buddah' or 'Rubbery Men: a mesmerizing biological enquiry' or 'The mesmerizing adventures of Nomy, the Swimming Mountain (any resemblence to real people, rubbery men or ancient gods is purely coincidental, I swear)'. What?.. Of course they are serious academic works. Oh.. What's that? My specialization? Well... You could say that I specialize in beauty. And let me tell ya, there is beauty in everything... I actually wrote more than that but most of the time my parchment sets itself on fire as soon as I sign it off for publishing. This has set off my dissertation by a couple of months already but I'm getting there. You could say that my topics are quite incendiary, haha. My supervisor? Oh, he doesn't speak to me anymore after the cabinet that he kept all his research documents in set itself on fire. I tried to explain to him that it's not me who set my thesis on fire before handing it in but he wouldn't see me. Anyway, it is quite a pleasure to make your acquintance, I will be glad to meet you all tonight at this gathering, courtsey of Mr. Chimes! /raises a glass of mushroom wine |

What at first glance appeared to be a small walking volcano in the doorway resolved itself into the figure of a massive giant, peligin-eyed and with a massive cigar clenched between his teeth. He was clad in a night-dark suit, and a sinister bone spear hung across his back. He nodded to everyone as he walked in, not removing the spear. He sat down at the table with Sidney, nodding as the scholar introduced himself. "A pleasure to meet you, Sidney! I am Alexander Voight, of the late Department of _________, myself. Terribly fascinating stuff, though I have since moved on to the subject of the study of Zee-Beasts. Surely you've read my work, 'On the Anatomy and Ecology of the Unterzee, A Comprehensive Study?' I plan to zail out and gather more material soon." He motioned to a server for a glass of wine, tossing a small handful of Echo notes on the table. "A round of the '77 for the table, please!" |

The parlor door opened barely a crack to allow the next guest in. He would appear to be an older urchin if not for his extravagant outfit: he sported a luxurious, masterfully tailored white suit, boots of some exotic, neathy, reptilian leather, white surface-silk gloves, and a set of spectacles tinted the color of remembered suns. He paused in the doorway to look around the parlor, and upon finding where Alexander had seated himself, made haste to his table. "Am I late? I apologize profusely. I just returned from holiday in the Tomb-Colonies, and have been occupied all morning by a minor, though troublesome, domestic squabble that had developed during my absence. One of the cats—though she is in truth just a kitten—with whom I share my home has apparently thrown herself in with the socialist cause, and has spent the past fortnight waging a most brutal one-man—or rather, one-feline—war against the "imperialist aggressors" who apparently occupy my kitchen. Thankfully I managed to coax her and said imperialist aggressors—in truth another cat, albeit a tiger—to agree to a ceasefire before they could do any more damage than they already had while I was away, though I fear it will take the kitchen maids at least a week to return my kitchen to usability." |

Alexander sighed deeply on hearing Louis's tale, nodding and tapping his cigar into an ashtray a serving girl had pointedly provided. He shook his head sadly. "I understand completely. My own tiger, Augusta, and Felicia's cat Delilah are similar. They are constantly waging aristocratic, passive-aggressive wars of territory against one another. I am merely thankful I don't own yet more cats...besides the matter of a certain unfortunate creature locked in a rear cupboard that will hopefully never be released." |

Louis raised an eyebrow like he was about to say something in response to Alexander's comment about a "certain unfortunate creature", but decided against it in favor of asking the serving girl for a cup of tea. "Speaking of Felicia, how has she been? I do hope our recent conversations haven't been boring her. I've tried to suppress my tendency to be a tad... Verbose, to put it kindly, so that she might hopefully remain engaged, but I fear I may have failed in that regard." Edited by Louis Ferdinand, Aug 7 2017, 04:12 AM.

Alexander stopped with his wineglass halfway to his mouth, shocked, before slowly setting his wine back down. "You think...you..." He laughed, a genuinely amused, roaring belly laugh. "My dear friend! Felicia has talked of little else recently. Even a pirate lord's feast from the Corsair's Forest could not budge her from questioning me about the Constables, about Society, about your lessons. She is quiet because she is listening closely to you, not out of lack of interest. I assure you, she heard every word. As for how she has been...She has been busy with certain...pursuits...in the Forgotten Quarter. I understand that she is nearly done and will likely be attempting to put your lessons to use in the Court. I wish her every luck in that matter." |

"I see. I was hoping I might be mistaken, but I didn't expect to be such a hit." Louis looked genuinely, though pleasantly, surprised. "Court, you say? If I may be so bold as to ask, what sort of business might she have there? For her sake, I hope she's not there regarding any artistic endeavors she might be engaged in. Those soulless philistines wouldn't know art unless it fell out the desiccated remnants of H—" Louis stopped himself with a cough before he could say something he would likely come to regret. "Yes, well, you know as well as I do how these things work." |

Alexander shrugged, taking a sip of his wine before setting it down with a sigh. "Artistic reasons. She wishes to publish certain of my Correspondence-related compositions that I never got around to publishing, due to certain factors. She is certain it will expand knowledge of the Correspondence. My strongest discouragement has had no effect on her enthusiasm. I confess that it worries me deeply. I can't be there to help her...she'll have to face it on her own." |

"Perhaps I might be able to sway her. My final performance at the Palace, as I believe you are aware, was partially written in the same tongue, and to say that it was not appreciated would be a rather grave understatement." Louis took a sip of his tea. "I believe I still have the scar given to me that night by a particularly offended viscount, whom assaulted me with a surprisingly sharp candlestick as I was being escorted out of the Palace. Wielded it with surprising skill, especially considering his hair was still smouldering." |
