Location: (red dot off the coast of the Pacific Northwest)![]() ![]() Climate: Similar to that of the Great Bear Rainforest, but with warmer summers and milder winters. Also doesn't rain as much, but still rains a lot. Ecology: Flora - The flora of the islands closely resembles that of the Pacific Northwest, with lots of ferns, and dominating redwoods. However, there are tree ferns and wild sweet potatoes introduced from NZ as well. There are a few species of alpine bamboo, and a species of tall grass unique to the islands. There is a true canopy system, with giant redwoods as the upper canopy, wide branched and open leaved deciduous trees as the middle canopy, tree ferns as the understory, and lots of ferns and berry bushes as the undergrowth. Pine needles, dead fern sheddings, and fallen leaves make up the ground cover. There are a number of unique flowers and medicinal plants found only on the islands. Fauna - The fauna of the islands is a unique mix. A number of relic species from the Pleistocene Ice Age are present, including mammoths, horses, giant sloths, sabertoothed cats, cave hyenas, megaloceras and larger versions of existing animals. There is also fauna typical of modern North America, such as wolves, many different foxes, raccoons, bobcats, brown bears, mule deer, sea and golden eagles, seabirds, and many other animals. Unique to the islands are a type of feral dog, which resembles a bulky, shaggy dingo, and a tribe of sub-human apes on the desolate far northern island, the smallest island in the chain.
