The Bjørn

The great Bjørn
It is said among men and elves that the Bjørn are the true children of Ursa-Taiga. A wounded beast of Ice and Fur cried out for help, and to it's side came Ursa-Taiga. She came to claim it's soul, to take it beyond the veil into the Realm of the Gods and beyond to the Well of Souls.
But it cried terribly, and the cold goddess asked, 'Why?"
The Bear answered that it wasn't finished. It's soul as incomplete, it would never see the well if it had no soul. Ursa-Taiga tried to explain the you could not see a soul until you passed to the other side of the Veil, but the beast did not understand.
To ease it's suffering, Ursa-Taiga taught the Bear the Gift of Metal, a great art from Dwarves and Men. "With this, fashion your soul, and wear it shining brightly for all to see." The Bear did so, and became the first Bjørn.
Every bear that beheld the great armor wanted to see their soul, too, and so each learned and taught, until the Bjørn rose mighty and shining from the Ice to be the Great Children and Army of Ursa-Taiga.

Biology and Behavior
The Bjørn are largely similar to the polar bear in appearance. Although there are many variations of Brown, Black, and multi colored Bjørn, White is the most common. However, the Bjørn have opposable thumbs and are very dexterous, capable of skilled metalworking. Bjørne are sentient and capable of speaking many languages, from Elf, Man, and Orc alike. They are exceptionally difficult to deceive.

Armour
Bjørn fashion their own armour from Star-Iron and Sky-Iron, fitted with Gold, Silver, and Copper. As they mature, they forge the pieces one by one. By the time they are adults, they are to have a complete suit. Bjørn consider their armour to be a reflection of their soul. When Bjørn Yorek, one of the greatest blacksmiths to come from the Bjørn, began to feel human feelings such as doubt, he was asked if creating armour was a human action itself. Yorek decided that there was a line between bear custom and human behaviour. It is important to note here that, to the Bjørn, all races that are not Bjørn or Beast are human.

Society
Bjørn are generally solitary creatures, but they have a loose society on the island of Svalbard, and in the Massive Cave city of Iha Serin. They were governed by something like a King, which is usually determined by bloodline, but sometimes can be elected by combat.

Under the reign of Bjørn Iofur, the Bjørn society became more human-like. He built a palace in the Caves of Iha Serin and had plans for a University on the island of Svalbard. Acting like a human made Iofur less able to perceive deception and so he was defeated in challenged combat by Bjørn Søren, who restored Bjørn culture to its previous, more primitive state.

When the rift between races created by Lord Asriel of the Sylvari changed the political climate of Svalbard, Bjørn Iorek led the Island Bjørn to the Caves of Iha Serin. They soon realised, however, that the ecosystem of the mountains was unable to support them, forcing the Bjørn to begin building cities above ground, for the very first time ever.
