MOSCOW -- Olympic figure skating champion Yulia Lipnitskaya has spoken about her battle with anorexia. The 19-year-old Russian's gold medal in the team event at the 2014 Sochi Games, with a program themed around the movie "Schindler's List," made her the youngest Olympic skating champion since 1936. However, she struggled to maintain that success, and her mother revealed last month she had retired from the sport following treatment for anorexia. Lipnitskaya said she wished she had spoken out earlier about her eating disorder. "Anorexia is a 21st-century illness and it's fairly common. Unfortunately, not everyone can cope with it," Lipnitskaya said in an interview released Tuesday by the Russian Figure Skating Federation. "My only regret is that I didn't do this before because it's all carried on not just for one year, or two, or three." Lipnitskaya's last competition, a Grand Prix event in November, was a far cry from her Olympic triumph. Unable to tackle the big jumps in her free program, she stopped the skate with tears in her eyes. The judges allowed her to resume after a break, but she finished 12th, in last place. Officials said Lipnitskaya was injured. She entered residential treatment for anorexia in Israel two months later. "After the Cup of Russia I came home and put my skates in a closet and I haven't seen them since," she said. "I'm no longer drawn to the ice." Lipnitskaya said that when she entered the clinic in January she assumed she would still continue her skating career. Two things happened to persuade her otherwise. First, sessions with psychologists helped her to realize she wanted to put her health first. Second, her stay in the clinic proved a little more isolated that she had planned. "After the first week there, on a free day, my phone was stolen and obviously that broke my whole connection to the outside world," she said. "It's only now that I understand why it happened to me. It was for me to really think about what's happening in my life. It played a very important role," Lipnitskaya said. "I had even more time to work on my health, and to think what I'd do after leaving the clinic." With a tendency toward curt, clipped speech and sometimes biting self-criticism, Lipnitskaya stood out in the relentlessly upbeat world of figure skating. In Russia, her young age and a very public hug at the Olympics from President Vladimir Putin made her a household name. She found it hard to cope with fame. "Ever since childhood I've been a very strong introvert," Lipnitskaya said. "Speaking with an unfamiliar person meant I had to make a real effort." Lipnitskaya said she has become "chattier" but doesn't think she needs "to get into every newspaper or onto every TV show when they invite me. I don't welcome that and I won't do it." That approach marks Lipnitskaya out as the temperamental opposite of Russia's other skating star from the 2014 Olympics. Adelina Sotnikova, who won the individual gold medal, has embraced the celebrity lifestyle as a regular on TV, including the Russian edition of "Dancing With The Stars." The announcement of Lipnitskaya's retirement sparked a frenzy in Russian media. Lipnitskaya said she has been forced to deny various unfounded theories about her decision, and that a man who claimed to be her father on Russian state TV was an impostor. What comes next for Lipnitskaya isn't clear. For now, she's focusing on education and hopes to enter college next year, possibly as a prelude to a career in sports management. She said she has found happiness regularly riding up to 25 miles on horseback in the countryside near Moscow. Her horse, Dakota, is "tall, with a model appearance and a lovely personality," the former Olympic skating champion said. "It's just like a dream." |

Russian figure skater Alina Zagitova won the tournament "Lombardy Trophy", which became her first international competition at the adult level. She scored a total of 218.46 points. This result was the fourth in the history of figure skating and the second among the current athletes. For the two-time world champion Evgeniya Medvedeva, this means that she has a serious competitor in the dispute over the gold of the Olympic Games.![]() The last two years in the world there was no skater better than Evgeny Medvedev. She won at every tournament, rewrote all world records, complicated her program so much that the judges simply could not count to her all the jumps. It seemed that the fate of the gold of the upcoming Olympic Games had already been resolved. However, the era of light victories Medvedev came to an end just at the same time as the start of the new Olympic season. The challenge to the two-time world champion was thrown by a young partner from the training group Eteri Tutberidze - Alina Zagitova. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffvaqMCUHyU Talks that a 15-year-old native of Izhevsk will break into the world elite in his first adult season, went for a long time. A year ago, Zagitova sensationally became the second in the Russian championship, leaving behind the whole world of Russian figure skating. Only Medvedeva, who lent her old dress to a young competitor, was better, but even she lost to Zagitova in the technical assessment. Alina arranged all her jumps in the second half of the short and free programs, for which she received a huge bonus to points. Such a way to complicate rentals is now adopted by many skaters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvSnSHhe_y4 Zagitova spent the rest of last season on junior starts, collecting all the most valuable awards and rewriting records of her age category. She had to leave the radar for a while, and they began to forget about the talented figure skater. But in vain. Preseason rentals in Sochi showed that Zagitova is fully ready for an adult debut, and the girl confirmed this at the competitions "Lombardia Trophy" in Italian Bergamo. Zagitova decided not to change her adult free program, and this clearly speaks of her Olympic ambitions. The young sportswoman has already approached one day to victory over Medvedev, and in such a situation it is better to bring to perfection what is, and not to start from scratch. Zagitova changed only the dress. The young figure skater has kept in her arsenal a unique cascade of triple lutz - triple toe loop, which is valued by judges more expensively than any series of three jumps by Medvedeva. The Russian waited until the start of the second half of the rental and brilliantly performed this element. All subsequent jumps proved to be clean, five of which were triple. From the point of view of technology, Zagitova has reached the level with which one can set the highest goals for the season. The judges found fault with only the components, which could not be avoided by any debutante. |

Answering questions after the control rentals, Alina Zagitova flirtatiously said that she would not talk about the task for the season, since this is a secret. Although there can hardly be anything secret here, after all, fans and specialists have been following the last championship of Russia for its rivalry with Eugenia Medvedeva . Checkout rentals left more questions than they gave answers. And the main one is who came to the start of the season in better shape? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrXinGbdLRs Blots made by Medvedev in the course of an arbitrary program, upset the skater and showed: a complicated version with the transfer of almost all the jumps in the second half for Eugene until something completely customary. While for Alina - the repetition of last season's content. Before the start of the "Grand Prix" stages, there is still time, but for Zagitova the international season began in Bergamo - the tournament "Challenges" became the first international adult start for the 15-year-old Russian woman. In the short program, the skater appeared in the form of a black and white swan in a rather original dress with rhinestones that change color after touching. Although the impression was created that it merged somewhat in it with ice. The ideal rental did not work - after a difficult call for a double axel, it fell. It is noteworthy that this jump was not the whole adult season-2015/16 for Evgeniya Medvedeva . She fell from him both in the Russian and American stages of the "Grand Prix", and at the European Championships, which did not prevent her from winning. But at the most important tournament of the season - World Cup 2016 in Boston - a capricious jump more than Evgeni did not fail. Alina did not get the axel pulled down - it was almost 3 points ahead of impeccable this evening, Japanese Wakaba Higuchi , and a few tenths - Carolina Costner . And the advantage of both was achieved not at the expense of technical evaluation, but at the expense of components. The figure skater was upset, but could it be otherwise in the perfectionist company with whom she trains? Suffice it to recall the grieved face of Evgeny Medvedev after a not very pure execution of an arbitrary program in Sochi. Or frustrated because of mistakes in an arbitrary program winner of the junior stage of the Grand Prix in Latvia, Daria Panenkov , also training with Eteri Tutberidze . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfs-Aud6Wr0 One of the main intrigues of the season related to Zagitova is the judges' assessment of her arbitrary program left from last season. The news that "Don Quixote" continues to exist, surprised many. After all, before that Tutberidze organized a bright debut for her students in adult competitions - that "List of Schindler" by Lipnitskaya that "I can not hear - I do not hear" Medvedev made a furore and became their business cards. There could even be a thought that in this way Zagitova , as Medvedev's main competitor , is slightly pushed aside. However, this practice is not new - many top skaters return their favorite and successful programs for storming the Olympics. For example, the silver medalist of the last World Cup Canadian Kaitlin Osmond , putting a new short program, decided to return to last year's production to the music of Edith Piaf. Has returned his past programs and Olympic champion Sochi and two-time world champion Yudzuru Khan . And Zagitova only had her one victorious junior season. As they say, any coincidence is accidental, but involuntarily a parallel with the Olympic champion of Sochi Adeline Sotnikova suggests . After all, her victorious free program under the "Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso" by Camille Saint-Saens, albeit in an improved format, was nothing more than a return to the past. It was with her that the skater in her first junior season-2010/11 won the junior world championships and the Grand Prix final. Having jumped the most complicated of the now performed by women cascade of triple lutz and rytberger. The one that is in the arsenal of Zagitova now, and the only one of our girls in the adult team. Right before Alina, the leader was riding on the results of a short program of Wakaba Higuchi . Screaming sounded " Skyfall " Adele. Without fail and with enthusiasm Higuchi performed the program and was pleased with herself, receiving 143.47 for the rental of an arbitrary program and 217.63 for both programs. What did Zagitova say ? A charming smile in a beautiful new red dress, incredibly similar to last year, but different. It would be hardly worthwhile to assume that the figure skater will continue to ride in a dress inherited from Medvedev's junior speeches . But the main answer was the flawless rental of the most complex and ever more interesting program. The result - 147.17 for an arbitrary and 218.46 points for the sum of two rentals. There is a first victory of the season! Another Russian, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, took the sixth place. Tuktamyshevoy, impressed by all the level of his training at control rentals in Sochi, could not be lit in a short program. The figure skater fell from her trademark triple lutz and touched her hand with ice after an unsuccessful landing from a cascade of two triple sheepskin coats. An arbitrary program started with a "butterfly", but it did not knock the figure skater out of the rut. Elizabeth focused on jumping and was no longer mistaken, but for the sum of two programs she managed to score only 184.75 points. Italian Costner, "queen components" in the tournament, gaining in the amount of 198.36, was the third. From September 21 to September 23, at another tournament of the "Challenges" series - the Memorial of Nepel will be started by Evgeniya Medvedeva . Again, the comparison between Zagitova and Medvedev will not be avoided. |

"Soviet Sport" publishes the material of candidate of psychological sciences, Gestalt therapist Anastasia Tomilova, who, perhaps, will seem to somebody ambiguous, but surely will cause discussion among readers and specialists. Figure skater Yulia Lipnitskaya finished her career the other day. The girl is 19 years old. She has always wanted to be what she became. She worked like a wolf, suffered violence against herself and fulfilled the dreams of her parents and other interested persons. Now these people and other goodwillers are talking about the fact that they had to take care of themselves. That she has matured, she began to form female forms, and she lost that old ... "twist". And she, for sure, was told from all sides: you need to lose weight in order to return the "twist". And my mother, for sure, supported her. And now everyone is making a helpless gesture and talking about the fact that "you had to take care of your health". The girl has anorexia. According to various data, this disease has a mortality rate of up to 30%, this is the only mental disorder that takes so many lives. And this is a girl who was mocked from childhood, making her a trained monkey and fulfilling her parents' desires so that she could become famous and win medals for her country. Everyone admired her, because she was "cool", but now these same people are getting their hands up and saying some garbage about something that had to take care of themselves. To protect from whom? From parents? Trainers? Sports Committee? She did what you wanted her to do. Many of those who consider themselves to be good people do not go to the zoo and circus, because animals are tortured there. But watching sports on TV, few people understand that everything is the same there. Only in the arena and in the cage are the human cubs. ![]() Since childhood, parents are beginning to rape the professional sports of their children, convincing them that they really need it. Depriving them is not something that childhood, but in general the idea that they can something to want ... The whole life of these children from a young age is put on the altar of parental ambitions. They, like clockwork, train and everyone dreams of standing on a pedestal. Someone is lucky, and he becomes famous, but how many who are also sick, suffer, say: they grow thin, they grow thin, get sick, and then they write off as scrap, because they do not hold out. The girl Yulia Lipnitskaya thought that she wanted to be what she had become. She repulsed all her own desires and her own emotions, thoughts. She's almost not human. She is a zombie who could not cope with the next task "lose weight". She managed more accurately, but fell ill, let the team down. And now it will hurt for a long time and hard. Very sorry for the girl, who may still find something in life, maybe someday go to psychotherapy and will win at least a grain of her own personality, which did not exist until now. Big sport is, in most cases, child abuse, which we encourage. We all are indignant, as a 16-year-old girl in Chechnya is married for 53 years? Yes? But why are we still "not saving" children from those who, from 3-4 years old, mock them, making them sports stars? Why does no one talk about the violence that is going on in rhythmic gymnastics, for example? As girls "tear", so that they stretch better, and parents are asked to leave the room, so as not to hear childish screams. Is it only sexual violence that is terrible and disfigures the psyche? Is Lipnitska a smaller victim of parental abuse than a child who has been incest? No. To my great regret. Anorexia, in a sense, gives the star skater a chance that her parents and those whose legs she got to represent the country deprived her. Her illness led to the fact that she no longer needed it. But now she can regain her life. Initially, the text was published as a post in Facebook . Tags: lipnitsa yulia |

MOSCOW, September 23 - R-Sport, Alexander Rogulev. Russian figure skater Yelena Radionova skates stronger in the beginning of the new season than in the past, the well-known coach Tatyana Tarasova told R-Sport agency . Last season Radionova took the 5th place at the Russian Championship and could not be selected for the European and World championships. In April, she joined the Russian national team in the silver medal at the World Team Championship. On Saturday, the 18-year-old figure skater became the third at Ondreya Nepela's memorial in Bratislava, charging for the rent of short and free programs in the amount of 182.21 points. "Thank God that she was able to defend herself in the team championship last year, otherwise she would have lost a year altogether," Tarasova said over the phone. "She starts to ride much more than she skated last year, and this must be noted. of course, there are no questions, we need to watch the weight, the form, and it can do twice as much in training, you need not be afraid to do it at competitions. " When performing an arbitrary program in Bratislava Radionova fell when entering a triple rytberger. "She skated better, but for no apparent reason controlled a quarter of a second, the skate was put on her shoe, and she fell down," Tarasova continued. "She had a triple lutz cascade - a triple toe loop and another combination with lutz (triple lutz-oyler - triple Salch.) She jumped lutz, and twisted it, so she did not jump the sheepskin coat to avoid it. " "She has a flip during the training with the second element, and she can make a flip-sheepskin, which she does, but here, at competitions, she was afraid to do it." She never tears lutz, I suggested to them earlier to put it in the second part of the short one program, it is necessary to type on something ", - added Tarasova. The specialist praised Radioova's program. "She has a wonderful program, the right choreographer is picked up.It needs to raise her maximum, then everything will look confident, because when Zhenya ( Medvedev ) comes on the jump, I do not worry about her, unlike all the others, including Lena," - concluded Tarasova. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdxVfeen6aw As formidable a competitor as Gracie Gold is, she’s proven herself to be an even stronger person. Ashley Wagner and Adam Rippon, two of Gold’s close friends, praised the Olympic bronze medalist for her decision earlier this month to take time away from figure skating to seek professional help. Gold did not give details on what kind of help she was seeking, but she has spoken about her struggles with body issues. “Taking a step back and actually taking time to focus on herself, as an athlete that’s one of the hardest decisions to make,” Wagner said Monday at the U.S. Olympic Committee’s media summit. “It really is just a statement to how strong that girl is, and people don’t give her enough credit for that.” The timing of Gold’s announcement was as much a surprise as her decision to take time off. It came less than six months before the start of the Pyeongchang Games, the pinnacle of Olympic athletes’ careers. Some elite athletes have pushed through injuries and put off surgeries for fear it could affect their chances of making the Olympic team. But Wagner said when Gold talked with her and Rippon before making her announcement, it was clear she’d reached a point where “she was ready to feel better.” “To be able to take a step back during your Olympic season, that just goes to show how much she needed a change,” Wagner said. “Whenever anyone is ever willing to get help to fix their lives, that’s admirable and never something that should be questioned.” |

![]() Megan Fee, 17, of Geneva, earned a gold medal in international pattern dance and a pewter medal in the senior solo dance combined event earlier this month at the U.S. Figure Skating Association's 2017 National Solo Dance Series Final in Colorado Springs. After devoting 12 of her 17 years of life to ice skating as her sport of choice, Megan Fee has reached her goal of winning a national event -- and she's ready to get on with her senior year at Geneva High School and possibly pursue a career in broadcast journalism. Fee earned a gold medal in international pattern dance and a pewter medal in the senior solo dance combined event earlier this month at the U.S. Figure Skating Association's 2017 National Solo Dance Series Final in Colorado Springs. In short, she's an elite ice dancer in her age group. And she got that way by spending a lot of hours at the Fox Valley Ice Arena and other area rinks, competing in freestyle at age 8 and learning ice dance two years later. "The last three nationals, I took home a silver medal, so coming home with a gold medal was really special," Fee said of her accomplishment. "It's really hard to bring home a No. 1 spot at nationals because there are so many competitors and so many levels." ![]() Of her final performance, Fee said, "Just one tiny mistake can make you lose the medal." She did not make that mistake. It put a nice finishing touch on a major commitment, one that put Fee at a distance from her friends and those competing in high school sports. It is hard to be practicing in an individual sport when all of your friends are winning the state basketball title or advancing in the state soccer tournament, Fee said. "It's pretty crazy, but I am in my own little world and it can be hard sometimes going to practice every day by myself," Fee said. "I'm not doing it with my friends or at the high school." In that regard, it is hard for others to fully understand or realize what it takes to reach national levels in a demanding sport like ice skating, Fee added. "But all of my friends and the high school have been so supportive, and I've received so much love and thoughts," she said. "I am definitely not left out. It's just a different world being detached from regular IHSA sports." It certainly doesn't take away the fun of being in high school, Fee added. She hopes to keep that sort of fun going as she pursues a college degree and hopefully a career in broadcast journalism. And no one is ruling out the potential for her to be a skating coach in the future. Overall, there must be something about Geneva kids and their proximity to Fox Valley Ice Arena. Fee's performances occurred at the same time St. Francis High School sophomore Chloe Ryan double medaled at the same event for the third straight year. Meanwhile, Derek Wagner, who graduated last year from Geneva High School, has fared well in national figure skating events. He's currently recovering from an injury, but many expect him to pursue his goal of being in the Olympics at some point. Coming to life: The Geneva Chamber of Commerce likes the idea of "live windows" during its annual Christmas Walk. By that, we mean they are encouraging businesses to have people in their storefront windows on that Friday, Dec. 1, evening to catch the attention of the thousands of people visiting that night. We've seen these windows "come to life" in the past with young women displaying bridal dresses, or some just greeting passers-by with a wave, and others trying different things to get laugh out of you. Those wanting to participate just have to send the name of the business, the address and a description of the activity to Laura Rush at the chamber -- lrush@genevachamber.com -- by Nov. 1. A strain on materials: In our search for potentially getting new windows for our home, the remodelers are warning us about a new reality: It could be tricky to get needed materials right away. There will be so much rebuilding taking place in the southern part of our country, Puerto Rico and in the Caribbean because of the hurricanes, that those of us thinking about some remodeling in these parts might find suppliers hard-pressed to deliver in a timely manner. Poetry on tap: Poetry lovers have an enjoyable afternoon in store at 3 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Episcopal Church in Batavia. That's when Christopher Kuhl will appear at a launch event for his new book "Night Travels." Kuhl, who has earned fiction author awards for his past works, will read some of his poems at the event. The church, at 222 South Batavia Ave., will offer refreshments at the program that will last until 6 p.m. |

Two-time world champion Eugene Medvedeva told about the adjustment of programs, as well as of friendship with Ekaterina Bobrova. "Adjustments to the programs after the hire in Sochi were many and even more than expected. Is this difficult for me? No, I would say that this is an advantage. The councils deal with both the technical part and the choreography. - Recently, Ekaterina Bobrova posted a photo with you in her instagram. Have you been friends for a long time? - With Katya Bobrova, we are very well friends, we live in training camps in one room. I even call her older sister. We spent the last season this way, "- said Medvedev. Two-time World Champion Evgenia Medvedeva opened her Olympic season with confident performances at Ondrej Nepela Trophy last week in Bratislava, Slovakia. She debuted her new programs, “Nocturne” by Frederic Chopin in the short and the rarely heard pieces “January Stars” by George Winston, “Divenire” by Ludovico Einaudi and “Dona Nobis Pacem 2” by Max Richter in the long. The 17-year-old reeled off her arsenal of triples and triple-triple combinations with her usual precision with the only glitch being a three turn on the landing of the triple Lutz in the free. In the short program Medvedeva scored 80.00 points, getting close to her personal best and record score of 80.85 that she achieved at the World Team Trophy last April. However, the two-time European Champion admitted that she had competition jitters before the short program. “I was nervous before the short, my legs were stiff,” the Muscovite said. “I felt better after the free. Before the free, I told myself that don’t have anything to lose and it worked out more or less. However, I can’t say that I was very happy that I skated better than at the (Russian Figure Skating Federation’s) test skate in Sochi, because you have to skate clean.” Medvedeva has progressed in many aspects of her skating over the summer. Her jumps are higher, her skating skills have improved, and although she has been an emotional performer before, she seems to “live” her programs even more. She has moved all jumps except for a double Axel into the second half of the free program, and now does almost all jumps with both arms lifted above her head, which she sees as a personal challenge. “Obviously, it is harder to have two (triple-triple) jump combinations in the second half and only one jump in the first half, but you get into it. You get used to everything, you just need to work,” she noted. I tried doing all jumps with both arms above the head and this only happened three days before I left for Bratislava.” “A week after Sochi, I skated my program like at the test skate in practice, jumping with one hand (above the head) or without arms (above the head),” the skater continued. “Just one day I thought – why not with two arms lifted? And so I started to jump that way. It is a bit harder for me, but it is a kind of challenge for me that I accept and I will work on it.” “We’ve worked a lot on the skating skills, but it is still not enough,” added the skater who always wants to perfect her skating and always feels she can do better – which is one of the secrets of her success. Nepela Trophy was an important test for the skater and her team to see how the programs can be polished further. “There will be some changes to the (long) program, but we won’t switch jumps around and put them all into the first half so it is easier for me,” Medvedeva explained. “Maybe we’ll correct some entries into the jumps, some technique, we’ll work on the spins, improve the quality of skating, find some tricks so that it is comfortable to skate and looks good. Overall, we want to raise the level.” The short is entitled “The Flight of the Human Soul,” while the long is about “our path of life that we all go through.” “It is hard to do the first steps, there are doubts and we are afraid of the unknown,” Medvedeva elaborated regarding the story behind the long program. “But with the help of faith, we can take that first step, because we feel support. The most important support is faith, having faith in yourself. Everybody has his own faith.” The World Champion prepared for the Olympic season with her coaches Eteri Tutberidze, Sergei Dudakov, choreographers Daniil Gleikhengauz and Ilia Averbukh. “We have our own training system and we stick with is,” Medvedeva said. Coach Tutberidze had said at the end of the past season that her top student had worked harder than ever before, but Medvedeva stills wants to do more. “I am planning to work even harder this season,” announced the skater who has broken 11 world records in her career thus far. “If your skates are not clean, you have to work more.” The first competition of the season has a special significance for the skater who feels all competitions are important. “I wouldn’t say that it is the hardest event for me,” she explained. “It is a debut event with new programs, new costumes which evokes a little different feeling. The first event of the season is the biggest experience, because you are overcoming yourself. At the start of the season we are not yet fully ready physically and morally. The first competition is the first push into the season, the first step, the first performances that bring to light aspects that you still have to work on and the details you need to refine.” Edited by ThirdTerm, Oct 1 2017, 10:16 PM.
