The Onslaught Approximately 40 years ago, we lost contact with a city in the far east. One by one, an onslaught moved from east to west. We don't know much about it, all we know is that it moved at about 2 miles an hour, and it was a wave of trees. It took weeks for anyone to respond, and by then a small nation was lost, but eventually people were dispatched with powerful fire spells and abjuration. It all failed. Bit by bit, the continent was consumed. Realising the fruitlessness of their opposition, there was mass emigration, and armies began to move fleeing the trees, sparking many wars. But one day, years later, it stopped. Nobody knows how, but when it did, the grand citadel of the council of mages locked its doors. They have yet to reopen. A few people looked into the woods, and found it safe, but those who strayed too far did not return. The Aftermath Even with the onslaught over, war still raged. Many secrets and magical items were lost, and many heroes died. In the end, only four large empires remained: The Moonset - A cluster of elves on the far west, bordering the ocean, who protected themselves with powerful magic. Nobody crossed their borders until the war ended, when they came out revealing themselves to be fine. Exclusively elves, they fear intruders, and are composed mostly of wizards (disliking sorcerers) as well as a few fighters and clerics. The Battlefront - Originally an orcish empire in the west, they fled, becoming nomadic. On the way they picked up many humans, and gnomes. They favour druidic magic, as well as rangers, and are also the main source of barbarians. The Midlands - A collection of smaller groups who came together for security, containing all races and all classes. Filled with political intrigue, and the only democracy. The Mountainside - It was believed that the slow dwarves, set in their ways, had died out, but about 10 years ago they quite literally resurfaced. They are reluctant to discuss what happened. Many do not know. This is not exhaustive and if you want to add another in for your backstory, pm me, or another DM. The Reclamation Finally, with the rest of the world in order, the civilised world turned its eyes to the forest. Specifically, the Whiteguard, the most elite section of the military. They are the branch that every young commoner dreams of. Typically, joining requires you to slay a dragon in single combat. But now, they are giving out memberships to new recruits. The best and the brightest, fresh off the training grounds, with a chance to set their names in history. Today, you, the chosen, are to be teleported to a lost fort in the heart of the forest. When you go in, you will not be able to leave. But if you stay long enough, you will lead the world into a new age. |
