A month? No, it was more than a month, Kaiser wasn't so sure of how long it had been, but what he did know was that he had been knowing Maisie for a while now, and that was good. In the while they had been knowing each other, Kaiser and Maisie had gone to the desert to practice archery a few times, maybe a couple of times every week, and Maisie was getting to be very good. Today was going to be one of those days, Kaiser was working on the pickup truck, filling it with whatever he thought could be necessary besides the targets, such as food and water, some gas in case they needed it in the middle of the desert, and even a sleeping bag... He didn't think they'd end camping there, but one never knew when something could go wrong and he figured, he could sleep outside, on the back of the pickup, while Maisie slept inside the cabin, if it came to staying out in the wild. Being sincere, Kaiser had hopes that something like that happened, he kind of wished he could take Maisie camping one of these days, if only because he wanted to share something else with her, the night sky, full of stars undisrupted by the city lights. In this time he had also come to think that he seriously enjoyed giving Maisie new experiences, there was something about her attitude, her expression, and her easily impressed personality that made it just awesome, at least in Kaiser's mind. When he was finally done packing everything, the teen jumped into the cabin, petting Dasher as he waited for his friend to arrive... For a first time, he was ready before her arrival, and he wanted to surprise her with this. |

It was funny, Maisie mused as she walked towards Kaiser’s house with her bow slung over her back, but she’d always assumed the arrival of her powers meant that she would never be athletically inclined in anything. She hadn’t been terribly good at that sort of thing pre-wings but once they’d appeared it’d only gotten worse. Now her wings actually helped her. Along with the fact that she could sense the wind she could feel it ruffling through her feathers and adjust her shot accordingly. It was gratifying to actually be able to use her powers for something. Maisie also found it very much an ego boost to see Kaiser react to her quick progress. She still wasn’t strong enough in her opinion but what she lacked in technical skill she could compensate with her other powers and had an uncanny ability to make a good shot even in the worst wind conditions. Much to Kaiser’s amazement. He still didn’t know about her powers outside of her wings though so his shock was understandable. It wasn’t that she was trying to be secretive she just had no idea how to actually go about explaining her other senses. Maisie had a hard enough time trying to simply explain them to herself. When she arrived Maisie laughed. Kaiser was already in the cabin of his truck and ready to go. She didn’t mind but she did feel a little bad about not saying hello to Robert. It felt like it might be viewed as rude even if she was pretty certain that Kaiser’s dad wouldn’t mind if they just left. Walking to the passenger side, Maisie tapped the glass to warn Kaiser and Dasher that she was there before pulling the door open and clambering inside. “Hello,” she greeted cheerfully, tugging her bow around to rest it on her lap. “I see you’re ready to go.” |

As Maisie walked by, Kaiser was pleased to see her laughing, of course he was all ready to leave, he loved to go practice with her, it wasn't just a lot of fun but made him feel a huge pride to see his friend advance so fast, and at some points even be better than him, even if she wasn't so strong or had as long practicing archery as he did. As she climbed into the cabin and greeted them, Kaiser nodded, turning the key to give life to the old truck that he and Maisie had been using for their trips into the desert. "Yeah, we couldn't wait any more..." He said with a chuckle, before fastening his seatbelt and then turning to Maisie, giving her a quick peck on her cheek. "So how's been your day babe? I'm thinking next time I'm gonna go pick you up... We're kinda live far." Kaiser commented as he began to drive out of the suburbs and into the wide open desert. He had already measured how far they should go to avoid the mysterious border phenomena. "I packed everything we could need for camping too, just in case you know... Though, what'd you say if maybe, next week we go camping? The sky looks amazing when theres no city light and who knows... maybe we could be lucky and see a shooting star." Kaiser suggested, finally deciding that perhaps, the coming weekend would be a nice date to go camping, no special events or anything happening but it'd still be nice nonetheless. |

Despite having a cat for a best friend, and one that could turn near monstrous at that, Kaiser often reminded Maisie of a puppy. He was just so happy about the littlest things at times. It made it very easy to be happy around him since such emotions tended to be contagious. She was already in a good mood, excited to continue increasing her skill at the first sport she’d ever excelled in and Kaiser’s obvious enthusiasm only made her smile widen. Maisie latched her seatbelt, careful to avoid hurting her bow in the process. She’d just finished and looked up to gaze out the front window when Kaiser bent close to casually kiss her cheek. She didn’t jump, a fact she was proud of, as she was still getting accustomed to her friend’s casual intimacy. At least she didn’t turn into a tomato every time now. A light dusting of pink was all it earned Kaiser anymore, well, so long as it was just the two of them and Dasher. An audience always served to make Maisie’s cheeks blaze scarlet. Kaiser barely even paused in the flow of conversation, something Maisie was actually quite thankful for as it allowed her to pretend she didn’t get so flustered. “That’d be nice,” she admitted. “I don’t mind the trip but then you wouldn’t have to wait for me all the time.” After a beat she added, realizing she’d missed a question, “My day’s been good. How has yours been?” Tilting her head back to see Dasher and include him in the question she continued, “And has yours been good too Dasher?” “Oh?” she grinned, curiosity making her head jerk around to stare at Kaiser. “I’ve never been camping before. That could be fun! But I would like to pack for that.” She definitely didn’t want to need a change of clothes and ruin more of Kaiser’s by ripping holes in shirts. |

Waiting was certainly not something that Kaiser liked to do often, more so when it was waiting for something that got him so excited and looking forward to it as Maisie's visits did, so going to pick her up would be for the best, at least in his opinion. "It's been a good day, we've got a couple of costumers changing their tires early this morning but besides that it's been calm, maybe later today there'll be plenty more costumers, who knows?" Kaiser said, he had helped his father with the tire changes before he began packing and they had finished early, then again Kaiser was so excited and bouncy today, it was no wonder he worked fast. At the mention of his name, Dasher looked up to Maisie and mewled, getting his head to rub against the girl to demand other kinds of attention, specifically, ear scratches, because nothing was better for a kitty than getting his ears scratched while they went to the desert. Kaiser on the other hand chuckled, Maisie had never gone camping so that meant he could give her yet another new experience. "It's great, you know? Sleeping outside with all the noises of the nature, watching the stars, making s'mores, hiking or trail walking during the day to see all kinds of animals running about, telling scary stories around the campfire..." He let out a long sigh, he really missed those escapes back home with his dad... Of course here they couldn't fish, but that didn't really matter, the point was to spend time with his father doing something relaxing rather than working nonstop. It took them a while longer to arrive to the selected place, one with a little more grass and less sand near the canyons and caves, with the shadows of the rocks and short trees making it nice and a little cooler than the rest of the desert, and having plenty of places to hang the targets on. Kaiser jumped out of the cabin and went around to open the door for Maisie, offering his hand to his friend to help her climb out before he went about grabbing the targets. "We should hang these from that tree, bet it'll be easier to nail them there than on the rocks." Kaiser said with a chuckle, offering Maisie some so she could pick where she wanted to hang them, while he nailed one near the roots, simply because low shots tended to be something challenging for him. |

Maisie laughed softly. Well, it was more of a loud exhale of breath than a laugh but it conveyed amusement as she twisted carefully in her seat, mindful of her wings, to pick Dasher up and pull him into her lap. She didn’t really think he’d object since she was moving him to make it easier to scratch the spots he liked best behind his ears. Her bow was in the way however and so it took her a moment of awkwardly shifting the kitty to move the bow out of his way. Once done she scratched up under his jaw then to the back of his head murmuring a soft, “Who’s a good kitty?” “Scary stories?” Maisie queried uncertainly. “I’m kinda a chicken. I think it comes with the wings you know. Very not my fault.” As jokes went it was a poor excuse but it showed she was getting comfortable enough to try and make them. “But the rest sounds like a lot of fun.” Especially the s’mores. She didn’t say it because she thought it sounded a bit sad but she’d never made s’mores outside of a microwave. Trying to get the perfect golden brown marshmallow over an open flame sounded like the sort of challenge she’d love to attempt. Whether that happened this particular trip or not hardly mattered. With Kaiser so clearly excited by the idea Maisie was sure the camping and subsequent s’more making would happen eventually. Unlike the time they’d gone shooting and discovered the border that trapped them all inside the city, Kaiser drove to a location that wasn’t as far out but that Maisie had never been to before. There were more natural trees growing than she’d seen anywhere else and she couldn’t help but smile at them, missing home. They weren’t there however to be homesick they were there to practice archery and since Maisie was quickly falling in love with the sport it was easy to forget less happy thoughts. When her door opened Maisie waited for Dasher to jump down before accepting Kaiser’s hand and hopping down herself. She carefully set her bow on the ground, leaning it against the side of the truck, so that she could accept the armful of targets from Kaiser. She wanted to put some up high but even with her newly learned gliding abilities she couldn’t actually propel herself upward. “Can you put some up high for us?” she asked as she set about placing targets at varying heights and distances. Even putting some slightly skewed on the sides of trees to make them more difficult to hit. |

Fear... Kaiser knew very well how it felt to be afraid and would never claim to be brave, his fears however weren't about ghosts or crazy murderers hiding in a forest, waiting for campers to go sleep... No, his fears were much less impressive, less flashy, and yet to this date he still felt them. He was afraid above everything else of losing his foster father, Robert was the light at the end of a tunnel of horrible experiences and nightmarish days and nights, Robert had put an end to the fear of coming home to find his father drunk beating his mother, the fear of being the next, the fear of not being strong enough. Losing Maisie was also another huge fear, he knew that from that time when they found the border, when he found out just how much he cared about his little angel. And speaking of her, she wanted targets higher on the tree, it wasn't a tall tree really, he could, if he put sufficient effort in it, probably reach and pull some of the highest branches with a good jump, yet that made it a dangerous task to try to climb it, the branches weren't particularly thick and he had his doubts about some of them being strong enough to hold Dasher's weight, let's not even talk about his weight. Instead of placing them though, Kaiser moved behind Maisie and with ease lifted her in his arms and placed her above his shoulders. "Now I'm sure we can reach any part of the tree" He said with a chuckle, he loved the lightness of Maisie, it allowed him to lift her without problem and holding her above didn't tire him as much as it'd tire him to hold anyone else on his shoulders. Walking carefully so that she didn't loose her balance, Kaiser asked "Is here fine?" trying to figure out good places where Maisie could hang the targets. |

With the foliage in the area there were a great many places that Maisie could put targets. She couldn’t reach up high but that merely meant she had to get creative to increase the difficulty of the shot. Besides, though he hadn’t responded Maisie knew that Kaiser would seek to fulfill her request. He was just that sort of guy. She hadn’t anticipated that he’d decide the easiest route to accomplish her desire would be with her help. Maisie squeaked in surprise when Kaiser’s hands settled on her and lifted her off the ground without so much as a word of warning. Her hands dropped to his wrists to steady herself while her wings flailed awkwardly before she consciously stilled them to avoid hitting Kaiser in the face. It wasn’t long that she was held awkwardly aloft with no sort of support. Kaiser quickly deposited Maisie on his shoulders after which she had to take a moment to focus on steadying her breathing. Her heart hammered uncomfortably fast in her chest but it wasn’t due to a fear of falling. Keeping her balance was easy enough. Kaiser’s shoulders made a fairly comfortable seat and she could flare her wings out if need be. It was the unexpected change in position from standing on solid ground to being on her friend’s shoulders that had her unsettled. But after a few moments she calmed enough to agree with Kaiser’s assessment and murmur a soft, “Yeah. We make a very tall person together.” Kaiser’s first step prompted Maisie to dig her heels back against Kaiser’s chest as she fought to remain upright. She wasn’t falling it just made her nervous. Slowly she lessened the pressure she was putting on him and started to look about herself for good places to hang targets. “This is good,” she agreed as she carefully attached one of the targets to the tree limb directly above her head. It wasn’t the hardest sort of shot to make but it’d give a variety on the angle for sure. Glancing around she found one more spot that looked good and bent towards it before she remembered she couldn’t move herself closer. Flapping her wings slightly to regain her balance she pointed a few steps away at another branch. “One more there you think?” |

He did know to expect the sudden movement, the fluttering of her wings as she gained balance and the pressure of her feet against his chest as she gained confidence... It was just natural, he had caught her by surprise. Maisie took a little while to relax and Kaiser tried to give her more security by holding her legs, that way it was downright impossible for her to fall without him falling first. Of course, in this position Kaiser just couldn't look up, so he had to wait for Maisie's attempts at moving to know that she was done. He didn't have preferred spots, any would do and he was sure Maisie would be good at finding difficult to hit spots because of how she was progressing, she was impressive already for the short time she had practicing the sport. Looking the best he could up when she called him, Kaiser nodded and walked over to the spot, well... what he guessed was the spot she was looking for. "You know, this is fun, we should do it more often" Kaiser said with a chuckle, the truth was he did enjoy having Maisie sitting on his shoulders, or well, carrying her in his arms... he liked to carry her anyway. Unfortunately, this had to be done for now, and thus he mover, kneeling so that Maisie could get off of his shoulders without problem. Looking up to see what she had done, Kaiser smiled and nodded approvingly. "Looks great, let's get the bows" He said cheerful, heading to pick his own and Maisie's and bringing them over as well as a pair of quivers with arrows and the equipment. He didn't take long to get the gears adjusted, he was very used to it, and turned to see how Maisie was doing, sure that she wouldn't need help... She had been growing used to the protective gear very fast. While he waited for her, he began stretching, and just as she was done, he took a step forward and gave her a quick peck on her cheek. "Ready babe?" He said with a smile, grabbing an arrow for himself and offering Maisie another. |

With Kaiser’s help, Maisie managed to hang another target were she wanted. It was in a spot that was at a slightly different height that the other one but close enough that going back and forth between the two could really mess with a person’s aim. She smiled, pleased with her selections when Kaiser spoke up. Although she was fairly certain she’d hit him with her wings and her heels pressing hard into his chest couldn’t have been comfortable either, Kaiser sure didn’t appear to mind. In fact she’d venture so far as to say that it was the opposite considering that he’d expressed a wish to do the same sort of thing more often. Considering that he had to bear her weight, minuscule as that might be, Maisie couldn’t think of a single reason why he’d want to pick her up all the time. It sounded like a good deal of work in her opinion. Instead of voicing her confusion she simply nodded then upon realizing there was no way Kaiser could see the motion she added, “I guess that’s okay. Just warn me next time so I don’t hit you.” When Kaiser knelt to let her down, Maisie clung all the tighter, the motion making her tilt forward a little before he steadied. Once he’d stopped moving she carefully hopped off and stood back up, relieved to be standing solidly on her own feet again. She didn’t mind when he wasn’t moving and she’d been merely sitting on his shoulders but the motion was a little disconcerting. She hadn’t been on anyone’s shoulders in years. Her grandfather had been the last one to lift her up to that sort of perch and he’d died before she’d outgrown the desire to experience it. Now though it felt weird, like she was too old or something. At least there was a good distraction now in the form of the reason they’d come out in the first place. Her awkwardness momentarily forgotten, Maisie grinned excitedly as she followed Kaiser back to his truck to retrieve their bows and protective gear. She’d gotten much faster at putting her gear on but as always Kaiser still beat her. She didn’t mind. “Definitely,” she agreed in response to Kaiser’s question as she accepted the arrow. She looked away when he kissed her cheek but managed to keep her face from colouring as she focused on taking aim. Exhaling slowly, Maisie decided to shoot at one of the high targets first. A gust of wind was about to blow from their left to their right so she adjusted her aim just enough that when she loosed her arrow and the wind caught it, it sailed right into the target, just barely missing a bullseye. “Yes!” |

He loved Maisie's enthusiasm, it made him feel happy to have found a sport that she enjoyed and excelled at. Everyone should find it, something that made them feel happy and passionate for it, something that made them feel excitement when practicing and joy when hitting the major leagues. Tensing his bow with the arrow ready, Kaiser waited for Maisie's shot, taking aim for one of the high targets, before letting his arrow go. Naturally he didn't know to expect the wind, so it knocked his arrow farther off the bullseye than Maisie's arrow, and yet it was reasonably close considering his disadvantage. "Not bad at all angel, that was close" Kaiser said with a smile to Maisie, taking out another arrow and readying himself, this time considering the wind blowing, which did help him score much close to a bullseye. He didn't have powers that gave him an advantage when it came to this sport, and since Maisie was getting so good at it, he had to improve and challenge himself more and more day by day. Several arrows later he was taking aim at one of the low targets when something unexpected happened, a big hare came out from somewhere under the tree roots, it's body showing just a little next to the target. To Kaiser the challenge of the shot seemed like an excellent way to show off his skills to Maisie, and the hare seemed like an excellent option for dinner considering he and his father hadn't yet decided what to prepare and calling pizza again didn't sound that healthy... or tasty, so with a light shift, the teen took the shot, hitting the hare although not managing to kill it with the arrow "DAMN!" He exclaimed, rushing to the hare. |

Not that long ago Maisie had despaired of ever landing a shot as close to the center of the target as Kaiser managed to do. She’d refused to give up simply because she’d finally found a sport she could actually participate in without her wings hampering her in any way. Well, that and Kaiser had purchased for her a very nice bow and she wasn’t about to let the incredibly generous gift go to waste. When she’d discovered her other talent for detecting nature could finally have a use it’d only heightened her enjoyment. Smiling to herself when the wind helped her arrow and subsequently hindered Kaiser’s, Maisie decided she really should tell him that she had a secret advantage when they shot outdoors. Maybe when they were done shooting for the day she’d let him in on the secret. It felt like it was going to be especially windy after all. The wind actually lulled for a moment though and in that brief window a rabbit hopped into view at the base of the tree just as Kaiser released his next arrow. Maisie’s hands flew to her mouth as a small squeak of horror slipped through her fingers. Likely expecting the wind, Kaiser had overcompensated and thus missed his target, impaling the poor fluffy critter with his arrow. His unhappy shout only confirmed the accident in her mind. Clearly he hadn’t meant to. For her part the moment the arrow had touched the bunny she’d sprung forward, feet pounding against the dirt until she was right beside the wounded creature. Dropping to her knees Maisie gently pulled the trembling, screaming animal into her lap. “Shh,” she spoke softly, “it’ll be okay. We’ll get you patched up.” Careful not to jostle the bunny anymore than she had to, Maisie tried to see exactly where the arrow had hit it. The process of examining was made more difficult by the blood matting the fur and staining onto her fingertips. “I’m so sorry bunny.” |

Maisie had reacted and reached the bunny before he did, which naturally puzzled him, he didn't expect her to intervene and yet here she was... And her words told Kaiser she wasn't there for the same reason he was. He could only swallow saliva as he watched her, knelt and with the dying rabbit in her lap, her hands and clothes growing red with blood as she tried to inspect the animal, promising they'd patch it up... "We... can't patch it up..." Kaiser stated, he didn't need to inspect the rabbit to know just how bad were the injuries because he knew just fine where the arrow had gone through... It had pierced at least one of the lungs and gone through several of the organs, so as it was, the rabbit was agonizing and unless they did something fast, it'd just continue suffering until suffocation and blood loss killed it. "Maisie... give it to me please." He said, the screams of pain hurt him, not because he didn't intend to kill the rabbit but because he had intended a clean, quick kill, he hated missing because of that, and because he hated it he trained hard. He didn't strive for perfection just because he loved the sport, this sport in particular was one where he had to strive for perfection because he didn't want to bring unnecessary suffering to his future meals. He knelt next to her, extending his hands to receive the rabbit, which he expected her to hand over... He had to finish it off, he wanted to finish it already... And yet, seeing her face, her trembling hands, her expressions and soft words... He could tell, once he did finish it off, he'd have a lot to explain to Maisie, unless she understood it once he did... Perhaps she was unsure if it had been an accident or if he had intended it, and once he finished, she'd understand... just perhaps. |

The wound didn’t look good. Maisie wasn’t really an expert of course since she’d rarely patched up human injuries and had never even handled a hurt animal but the location of the arrow and the sheer volume of blood didn’t bode well in her opinion. It was possible an artery had been nicked but what she’d seen from television that meant that the bunny should already be dead and it was still thrashing in her grip so she didn’t think that was the case. Kaiser’s words were slow to register. Her focus and concentration weren’t on him and so she didn’t even acknowledge the first thing he said. The second though, combined with his assertion that they couldn’t patch the rabbit up, snapped her to attention. Her gaze darted up to meet his and a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach caused her grip to tighten slightly on the bleeding creature in her lap. She had to be wrong. Maisie stubbornly clung to the idea that there was no way the sudden sneaking suspicion that Kaiser had intentionally aimed for the rabbit was correct. He was a very nice boy. Not the sort of person who’d go around injuring others if given the opportunity. At least she’d thought so. He certainly acted protective of her despite the fact that their ages weren’t terribly far apart. Someone like that wouldn’t turn around and purposefully murder an innocent little creature. That was impossible. Her determined assurance aside, Maisie couldn’t help but curl her wings forward to form a protective circle around herself and the injured bunny. The rabbit continued to thrash and Maisie flinched when one of its hind legs kicked her wing. Unable to bring herself to ask Kaiser just what he planned to do with the rabbit if she did hand it over, Maisie decided on a more tactful, cautious approach. “I’ve got him. Do you have a first aide kit in the truck? I’m sure we could make it work short term. At least until we get him to a vet.” |

He didn't need to be a genius to tell that Maisie had doubts about handing him the bunny, she wasn't subtle about it even though she tried to distract his attention by sending him to get the first aid kit. He probably could have gone for it, and have tried to save the bunny, if only because he figured that'd spare him a painful moment with Maisie, and he considered the option. Yet something inside him rebelled against that easy way, he didn't want to hide something like this to Maisie, even if it hurt her right now, she couldn't live deceived because he knew, it was just a matter of time before she happened to find his trophies, she had never encountered them because on the times she had gone to his place, he hadn't had them installed and since he had them installed she hadn't gone to his bedroom... When that happened, this whole event would take a much different tint, and then she'd be angry about him telling her a lie. The movements from the bunny, and its screeches of pain, hurt him somewhere else too... He hadn't done a good job as a hunter, a quick, painless kill, and each second that he spent talking to Maisie, considering the options, was a second in which the little creature agonized as blood filled its lungs. "I'm sorry Maisie..." He began, he found no better way to begin, however he still lacked the words to explain it to her. He approached her some more, kneeling next to her. "I missed... I..." He paused, his eyes had been looking at Maisie's at first but now they were locked on the agonizing creature, he couldn't see Maisie's tears, he wouldn't see them, because he was sure there would be tears in her face and it was going to be his fault. "I wanted to... Show my skill and invite you to dine with us... I'm... I'm sorry Maisie, I missed but not by much... it's beyond saving." He said slowly, remorseful, and yet determined to finish what he had begun. "I can't... fix it... but at least, let me... let me put it out of its misery... that I caused." Kaiser stated, saying those words hurt his pride in many different fronts, and yet his pride was the least important thing right now, the most important thing was that they had a wounded, agonizing bunny, and each second they took, it suffered more. |

Maisie knew her fears were going to be confirmed before Kaiser knelt down beside her to explain. She could see the regret on his face as easily as she could see her nose when she crossed her eyes. The preceding apology only made her all the more worried but when he did speak she was relieved… for a moment. He had missed. There had been no intention of hurting the crying creature in her lap. It’d been nothing more than a horrible accident that they would now remedy by helping the bunny get better. It was sad that the rabbit had to experience any pain at all but it was a problem that time would fix and if it didn’t, well, Maisie had never had a pet before but if the bunny couldn’t return to the wild then she’d adopt it. Peter was a good name for a rabbit. Just like Peter Cottontail from the children’s rhyme. Kaiser’s clarification shattered her illusion and the shopping list of items she’d been compiling for owning a rabbit. Tears sprang to her eyes and slowly spilled over leaving wet trails tracing along her cheeks. The furry rabbit in her lap was going to die and it was all because of her. Kaiser had aimed for it, shot it, been the one who now wanted to deliver the final blow to ease the animal’s suffering but if it hadn’t been for her then he’d never have decided to take the shot. There were many things about her life that had changed due to the emergence of her wings but Maisie would have sworn up and down that she’d never be the cause of death. A grim reaper with angel wings. Stroking the bunny’s head gently, Maisie folded her wings back. She didn’t want it to die but if it was truly beyond help then all she was assuring was that its suffering was prolonged. Careful not to jostle the rabbit anymore than necessary, Maisie shifted so that Kaiser could reach it although she made no attempt to actually hand the creature over to him. Truth be told she was having trouble looking at him at the moment, her gaze held captive by the screaming animal. “I’m sorry,” she whispered to it, voice thick with tears. “It’s all my fault.” Kaiser could take the rabbit from her and she wouldn’t resist but Maisie knew that probably didn’t look like the case since she was still cradling the creature against her. For once though she was too upset to care what someone else thought of her just then. Her presence had been an innocent creature’s death sentence. |

Considering Maisie's expression, Kaiser should have stopped talking, he should have gone to the pickup and get the first aid kit, and try to do a miracle. Yet he didn't, he didn't feel it was fair to tell her a lie, much less because he knew it was just a matter of time before she happened to find his trophies, and then she'd be angry at both being misled and about the injured rabbit. Her tears broke his heart, he didn't meant to make her cry, he didn't meant to hurt her, and yet he had done it. He struggled, taking in a deep breath, not wanting to shed tears because he had no right to shed them, he had no right to cry because he was the one that had hurt her. He wanted to embrace her, and assure her that everything was going to be alright, but he knew better, doing something like that would be being a cynic and he wouldn't ever allow himself to fall there. As she slowly offered the bunny, somewhat, Kaiser reached for it, hearing her words. "Maisie, close your eyes and cover your ears." He stated, turning away from her with the wounded creature in his hands, glancing a couple of times to be sure she had done as he had told her to do. When she did, Kaiser turned to the bunny and with a swift strike broke its spine just behind its head before closing its eyes. Once he was done, he stood up and looked back at Maisie "It's not your fault... I thought having a bunny for dinner would be... a nice change for my father and me... and sharing with you... I... I didn't think you'd take this so bad..." Kaiser confessed, he could only wish for Maisie to forgive him as he took the bunny to the back of his pickup, followed closely by Dasher. "No, this isn't yours Dasher." The teen stated, his hands could be covered in blood and yet, he took his kitty away from the bunny, grabbing plenty of paper and taking it to Maisie. "Please..." Forgive me... He thought, but couldn't say it, he didn't have the heart to do it, not seeing his friend crying like this. |

Kaiser carefully pulled the bunny from her lap and it took a significant amount of willpower for Maisie to keep herself still. She knew now that there wasn’t any way to save the rabbit and since she didn’t want it to continue suffering that meant allowing Kaiser to end its misery but letting something be pulled from her alive so that it might be slain was… difficult. What she really wanted to do was snuggle the rabbit to her chest and fly away with it. Of course she couldn’t fly but the desire was strong enough she thought she might actually be able to pull it off. The instructions were just as hard to follow. She didn’t want to see the bunny die but since it was her fault she also felt as if she owed it to the creature to witness its last breath. The desire not to see and the knowledge that Kaiser wouldn’t end the rabbit’s suffering until she complied prompted her into following his order. Maisie could hear Kaiser shifting around though and when she was sure he wasn’t looking at her anymore her hands dropped into her lap and she opened her eyes. Kaiser had his back to her so she couldn’t see much but the sound of snapping bones and the sudden silence that followed was almost worse than actually seeing the rabbit die. Maisie couldn’t help the small sound she made then, a squeak that sounded far too loud in the quiet. Kaiser’s words about whose fault it was or rather wasn’t fell on deaf ears. Maisie was too busy staring down at the literal blood on her hands and thinking of the figurative. Bile rose in her throat but Maisie forced it down and wiped the blood off on her shirt. It wasn’t a great fix but the feel of it on her skin was worse. The wind ruffling through her feathers drew her attention to her wings and the areas the rabbit had kicked. Blood smeared feathers stuck together and Maisie shuddered. The black colouration of her plumage meant it was hard to see the blood but she could feel it and that was more than enough. Curling her hands over the sharp points of opposite elbows, Maisie held herself still and tried to stem the tide of tears. She wasn’t helping anything by crying and she knew it was only making Kaiser feel bad when he’d only meant to impress her but she just couldn’t get the screams out of her head. Kaiser’s soft word was met with a twitch but she didn’t move aside from the barely there trembling that had set in. She’d watched something die. Worse still she’d made something die. And there was blood on her feathers. "Please," she whimpered, hugging her arms tighter about herself. "I want to go home." Edited by Maisie Williams, Sep 3 2015, 11:53 PM.

She had seen, hadn't she? Her squeak... It told Kaiser that something hadn't gone as planned and yet he didn't dare ask. No, he just couldn't ask anymore, he couldn't... He didn't feel the courage to push this any further, to find out to what extent he had hurt her, because he had hurt her. She was making more of a mess of herself, Kaiser knew just how hard it was to wash away the blood, it happened sometimes and his clothes could stay stained for a couple of washes before they finally were clean again, more so if they happened to be white. He wished he could help her, hold her hands in his and wash them, wash her beautiful wings, the wings of an angel should never be stained with blood, not like this. And yet he knew he just couldn't, right now all he could do was to give her the paper so that she could clean herself, he couldn't even fathom touching her in any way. He didn't deserve it, he had done wrong. She probably wouldn't notice the tear that slid down his face while she cleaned herself up, he was swift at wiping it away, covering his eyes with his hands for a moment, he couldn't and wouldn't cry. Her whimper shook him, shook every single fiber of his being, she hated him. Nonetheless he nodded, standing up again and offering her a hand, they were far from clean, still damp with blood, but were reasonably cleaner given how he had smeared plenty of the vital liquid in paper towels before grabbing some for Maisie. "Come, let's go..." his moves were swift, picking up the bows and arrows after leading Maisie to the truck, then getting into the cabin. He didn't know if he wanted or dreaded the silence, but silence there was... Silence while the two drove to the city, he couldn't think of taking her to his place after this. |
