Team Lexzie Posts: 1,894 Group: Member Member #33 Joined: February 19, 2008	A thread to discuss Chuck Bass. I find Chuck to be such a deliciously complex character. On the one hand, he's completely manipulative and sexy, but on the other hand he's so very insecure and starved for affection. I'm curious to hear other people's thoughts on why it took him so long to finally say the "three words, eight letters" to Blair. I was discussing with one of my 3D friends, and he thought it was because Chuck believes Blair deserves better. I think that's certainly part of it, but I think the bigger part is what was addressed in the finale--fear. We see Chuck's attempts at having a relationship with his father get bitterly rejected again and again. I think Chuck can't tell Blair he loves her at the beginning of the second season because he's afraid she won't say it back. (Which is why he's so intent to get her to say it first circa 2x8.) But after she does say it, my theory doesn't exactly hold up. I guess I think he's afraid she'll change her mind? But why does he finally say it at the end of the finale? What changed between the scene where she's basically begging him to tell her at the party and the final declaration by the limo?

His father had relationships galore and seemed to trade women off like most people traded baseball cards. How does a boy learn what love is from some one like that? They don't. They can't. I think that is a large part of why he wasn't able to express himself sooner. He didn't know what it was he was wanting to express and he didn't know how to express it.

I liked the symmetry of starting the season with the "3 words, 8 letters" intro and then ending it with him finally saying them, but I thought there were so many other points in time where he had more of a reason to say them--when he came to apologize for the brunch, when he found her with Carter, when she was losing herself at the Vanderbilt party, in the restaurant when she told him she'd leave Nate for him, at the graduation party when she basically begged him to finally tell her. I didn't see what changed between that party scene and the sidewalk scene. She wasn't going anywhere. She wasn't with anyone new. Why then?

I think up to that point a part of him was scared that she was going to leave him, and then he would be the fool who said he loved a girl who didn't love him back.

And like talk about the differences between both characters? I don't want to cross any lines on here because I'm not a fan of the show but I love the books. So yeah hahah just wondering..
