Anthony Xavier is sitting in what seems to be a locker room bench. He's wearing one of his merch t-shirts and his wrestling gear, and it seems like he just came out of a match. His dog Sammy is resting in his lap. X: Excellent match, indeed... Alright, GCW. Let's do this. First and foremost, I'm sorry I left you guys hanging a couple of days ago. I had some other things to attend to, so I wasn't around. That's a wrestler's life, I guess... I'm turning 25 today, but my life is my work, so there's nothing to complain about. I know some of you wanted to hear 'my story', so let's give it a shot. Xavier grabs a towel and wipes the sweat of his face X: Uhhh, It's not a glamorous story, but golly, it's as real as it gets. Growing up, we didn't have much, my mother and I, but she always tried to make sure that I had everything I needed. My three cousins lived nearby. I was an only child, so I used to spend a lot of time with them. Xavier laughs for a few seconds. X: Huhhh... They were the ones who introduced me to wrestling. We watched so much wrestling back in the day, that was literally all we used to do then... And of course, we were so obsessed, we made our own little wrestling company. We had everything we could need, I guess: a big backyard, a mat, some ropes, a bunch of old wrestling tapes and a lot of creativity and audacity to come up with crazy moves. Eventually, we went our separate ways. Anthony puts down the towel. X: My uncle had to move out of state, so that was the end of the lil' fed, to give it a name. That's life, I guess. But the idea, you know, the thought of becoming a pro wrestler, was still going 'round my head, so a few years later, some guys started a new promotion, that just happened to be on the other side of town. But I knew that was my opportunity, so there I was, a 13-year-old with a dirty old mountain bike, traveling across town to be part of that experience once again. X: Of course, I started from the bottom; I had to beg for them to let me be part of the part of the ring crew. Yeah, that's how it all began. Until this day, if I'm around and you're still trying to set up a ring, don't worry, I've got your back. X: I helped them out for a while, made some new friends in the business, trained here and there with them and we were able to share a lot. Never went to no wrestling school, was never able to afford it, but here I am today. Eventually I was promoted to timekeeper, then I was a ring announcer for a while, I was even a manager once, also had to be the ref, once or twice, doing a lot of menial tasks, helping people out... That's how I started to pay my dues, some might say. X: Anyways, I did that for a couple of years, until one time, a situation happened: a wrestler that was scheduled to be on a show had an accident like half an hour before the show, so they had to replace him. Jeez, I was shocked when I heard that, and I was even more shocked when my friend, who ran the place, asked me to be that replacement. It wasn't a very good decision, but I was ready to roll; they gave me an old luchador mask so people wouldn't realize I was the ref they'd seen just twenty minutes ago; first actual wrestling match, in front of an actual, paying audience, almost shaking, but we ended up doing a great job. He runs his fingers through his hair and nods agreeingly. X: Yeah, it was... My friend just talked to me after the match and told me: 'You're a natural, kid. Wanna keep doing it?' And my answer was simple: 'Heck yeah'. And that's how it all began, about eight years ago. No wrestling school, no actual training, but a lot of dedication, a lot of heart and a lot of love for what I do: that's the beginning of Anthony Xavier's story. X: Wrestling's taken me all over the world since, goodness gracious, I think I could definitely write up a couple of books with all the different 'incidents' that I've been involved in, but this is just a little promo, so, Story Time: I'll just tell you one of them, not a nice one, but something that you definitely o'rta know about me: X: 'Bout a year ago, first time ever happened to me, even though I've obviously heard similar stories in the past, I got a phonecall, new promotion, seemed quite experienced in the business though, were paying really good money in advance, and they were interested in having me there for one show, in Washington state, if I recall correctly. X: I flew across the country, with all good intentions, went to the venue, talked to the guy in charge and then I saw the guy I was supposed to face, won't say his name, regular big guy, 'bout 350 pounds, 6'2", but he seemed, uhhhhh, a bit incoherent, to be quite honest. Should've known better. He looks down and shakes his head as he continues the story. X: Few minutes after that, I was in the ring, ready to rock, while my opponent was across the ring, but the guy was again just... there. We did the match, didn't click at all, I won, did what I always do after it, and then I walked to the back. There I was, packing my bags and talking on the phone. Had a match scheduled not far away the next day, so I was talking to that promoter. I was about to hang up the phone and suddenly, BAM!, the bastard sucker punched me in the face and threw me head first against a locker. Anthony sort of reenacts the scene as he speaks. X: He wasn't very happy about the fact that I had justbeaten him, so he had set me up and, as he said, he was gonna get rid of me. But I was having none of that. I got back up, bleeding like a faucet, hit him with left hook and I took him down with a side headlock. I was ready to choke him out right there, but I realized that I was neck deep in enemy territory, so I asked for some help and I had to let him go. Got a big gash on my forehead, but I showed him that you don't mess with me. I still made it to my other booking, with a face mask and all, because even though you can say a lot of things about me, you can NEVER say I'm not a professional. Xavier brings himself back to his feet. X: It is my pride and joy that I can say, to this day, that nobody who has ever worked with me can say a bad thing about my skills, my behavior or my commitment to the art of professional wrestling. And I'm definitely interested in keeping it that way. That's why I don't tolerate bullies like that guy. People who think they deserve it all. Who think that it's OK to take advantage of others. Guys who think they're entitled to have it all. You know them very well... He slowly walks toward the camera, with a very threatening look in his eyes. X: I'm the Submission Magician, Anthony Xavier, and I will take care of those guys. I will break them, I will destroy them, I will make them suffer, and most importantly, I. WILL. MAKE. THEM. TAP. That's no threat, that's a promise. I don't care who you are, how heavy or how tall you are, your accolades or your skills, if you mess with me, with my friends or with wrestling in general, you're gonna pay. That's a promise. Xavier smirks and grabs the camera, his dog starts barking and he suddenly snaps out of it. X: Oh, sorry about that. Well, see you next time. C'mon Sammy, we're leaving! Xavier grabs his dog and walks out of frame. |
