Hank Gerthrew from the GCW Dirtsheet branch over at SuplexScoops.com. In case you missed it, yesterday the brand-split rosters were revealed. There's some lesser but still important stuff to be added onto that as well, so we might as well get to it.
What the Split Means as a Whole:
- The Nitro Network gets a new show. That'll make their guys happy, especially because with what they're trying to do, more content is always better. They do a lot of re-runs and exclusives so the fact that they get one more episode of something every week to mix the order around is nice.
- As for GCW, they get an extra show. When looking at finances, it's a big investment to do more than one show, but it could very easily pay off. When contacted, GCW executives agreed on the fact that "It wasn't for the money, but the talent. It wasn't fair when we had half our guys gutted off of shows because we didn't want to make a 4+ hour show. As long as we can break even and keep doing what we're doing, that's what matters. This is a passion project way more than it is a business."
- One issue for the content is that now we won't see some of the stuff we would have when Lightning was the only show. There are some rivalries we won't get to see until another draft happens or some inter-show stuff starts to happen. It's unfortunate, but with all good things come sacrifices.
- Because of what we gave up in that last point, now fans will get to see more emphasis on the guys who aren't quite 'spotlight' level. The men and women you want to see each week will have an appearance, or at least they should since they're fighting 50% less people for a spot now. This is a good time for wrestlers to grow and develop, so they really should take advantage before more wrestle swarm in and crowd the Venom and Lightning locker rooms.
- I'm sure they'll be some competition between Chad and Jon, so we might see some pretty crazy things as they try to out-do the other.
What the Split Means for Lightning:
- Jon is now working with a smaller roster, which is good but also different for him. He's lost some pretty big names (Mat Emeralds, Carlos Cruz, Mr. Love), but has enough star-power to get through. One thing he may have to do is push mid-card guys into the Main Event scene, because he's got a lot an abundance of talent that's comfortable being in the middle while he needs more wrestlers to be the faces of Lightning.
- Vincent, Niko, Stark. All IBW names. All pretty big IBW names. There's something to be done with them in some way.
- We could be seeing some of the newer guys get some big chances to shine. I wouldn't be surprised if before February guys like Robert Kendricks and Bad Boy Benjamin were in the hunt for some mid-card gold
- Overall as a show, Lightning seems to have better chances as a show. They've got good lower and middle matches, the issue is I wouldn't be surprised if their Main Event scene doesn't do as well. Lightning seems like it won't have FANTASTIC matches, but also won't have any major flops.
What the Split Means for Venom:
- Venom is looking to be the opposite of Lightning. There's definitely a good roster on Venom as well, however it's more geared towards the Main Event scene. Venom has a lot of big names, but not enough lesser guys to make an effective distinction between the spots of a card. While some may say a loaded roster can't be bad, it is when you've got too many people who could be fighting for the belt. It's very possible for the lesser title matches to outperform the world on any given night, which is a pretty big no-no.
- With the loaded roster, there's also a lot of guys who aren't at the level they should be at. Venom may need to book a strong opener every night just so the fans have something to think about while the undercard matches happen.
- With those cons, though, there's still a lot of good to come out of having a lot of great talent. There should always be about two matches a night that are either decent or that REALLLLY stand out. That's how Venom is going to be getting its viewers. Once a formula is cracked out to produce those outstanding matches (even if it means booking the same two people against the other), Venom will be tough to beat.
In other news, something else has happened. Recently, GCW has sponsored a smaller company that'll be providing additional content for the Nitro Network. The contract is a bit iffy as to who owns it, but it seems like it will just have a GCW tag on it, and there's no actual ownership.
What We Know about MNW Revived:
- After a surprisingly successful Kickstarter Campaign, an older wrestling company has resurfaced. They're relying not on widespread appeal, but their odd and fun cult-following.
- We know as well as being on the Nitro Network, all of MNW Revived's shows will be posted on YouTube.
- MNW has been known for odd spots and a more fun take on 'hardcore'. Some notable spots of the past involved a spear off of a small building and into the ring, having an onslaught of fans beat down a heel, and the owner getting branded.
- MNW Revived is quite literally a backyard federation. They have all their licenses, but the venue is literally in the backyard of the owner's house.
- The statement from "Johnny Violence" has said that they just want to get the vibe of fun backyard wrestling back. He's seen the errors in his old style of running things (which at the time got him removed from booking the matches on his shows when they first got a TV deal at a local station), and he said he's finally ready to kick down the doors and start over.
- Also, there's been some confirmed names coming back... The most notable being Ace Voltaire, who's signed to pretty large companies recently.
