GCW Signs Veteran To Lightning Is This The Last Hurrah For John Russo? "This is my last match in this ring," was what John said to a small crowd before his final match with independent federation SDW(San Diego Wrestling). The crowd, of only about 250, was stunned by this proclamation. They perked back up once he revealed the reason why though. "I'm not retiring," he told them with a smile, "I'm just simply lending my talents to the GCW. More specifically Wednesday Night Lightning!" Mr. Russo began his in-ring career with the Lock Wrestling Federation(LWF) back in April 2008. While with the LWF he captured the Cross-Hemisphere Championship, Tag Team Championship(on two occasions), and won the Lord of the Ring tournament. When the LWF closed its doors in March of 2010, he joined many of his roster mates in jumping ship to the Unified Global Wrestling Coalition(UGWC). While with the UGWC he was able to capture the Cross-Hemisphere Championship on two separate occasions. However, his stint(s) with them was mired with personal issues arising outside of the ring. These issues forced him to leave and return on multiple occasions, final throwing in the towel with them in 2014. While he hasn't been active on a larger stage, that doesn't seem to deter Mr. Russo. "Nervous? I'm not nervous about leaving the small venues behind," he told me, "If anything I'm excited. Excited to finally get back out there and do what I love to do in front of thousands of people and millions of others watching at home." Jonathan Evergreen, the General Manager for Lightning, seems to share Mr. Russo's enthusiasm. "I am very excited to sign one of the hottest free agents in pro wrestling and bring him to the A show! I know that he will be a big player one day here in GCW," was what Mr. Evergreen replied with when asked for a comment on his latest signing. But the question remains; what happens if John doesn't live up to the hype? He was pushed frequently and frequently while in the LWF, and an argument could be made the same for his stint(s) in the UGWC. However, when push came to shove he could never seem to get over that final hump. "That was then this is now," he said grinning from ear to ear. "I'm in a better place than I was back then, both mentally and emotionally. Obviously I won't be main eventing Brawl for All next week, but I could be headlining whatever pay-per-view we have in the next six months or so. Until then I'll go out every day and night doing what I do best, putting on a great show." And Mr. Russo will indeed get his opportunity with his first Lightning match against Harold Flemotomo, a fellow California native. Though it appears that Mr. Flemotomo has been on a bit of cold streak since getting a title opportunity back at the end of July/early August. "I'm sure Harold is a great competitor, and I'm really excited to face him in the ring on Lightning," he said grinning like a kid at Christmas, "However, I know all too well that all it takes is three seconds to climb that mountaintop and that anyone can do it on any given night. So, I'm not gonna take it easy on him when we meet in the ring, I just hope that he reciprocates and goes all out as well." Whatever happens Wednesday on Lightning one thing remains clear, John Russo is ready to make the most of the opportunity that is being presented in front of him. With this likely being the last chance any large promotion gives him, he better make the most of it. "It's all on me now, I have to be the one to do this. No one out there is gonna catch me if I fall. So, I guess I better not fall." |
