A WIP
Estimating 418 laps.
Much of the race was led by a Minolta Toyota. The Sauber has once again taken the lead & has held it for at least 15 laps but the Toyota remains just seconds behind.
Tests indicated I could not win using the Jaguar or my Toyota if I did not use the turbocharger. My Toyota has a turbo which boosts power to over 1,000 HP. There were 2 problems. My car was set up to hit 240 m.p.h. but the AI driver would not exceed a 212-215 m.p.h. range. with the turbo this increased to 218-224 m.p.h. Also the AI driver cannot get around the Mulsanne curve at the end of the Mulsanne straight without going off the road. But the biggest factor is tires. My car has the highest top speed, the fastest pitstops, the fastest acceleration and the fastest lap time both for myself and the AI driver. My car is in last place. However where other cars can go at least 6 laps on a set of tires, the best my car can manage is 3 laps. I let the AI driver have the car as when I drive the car handles erratically and only gets 2 laps from a set of tire.

After 8 hours my car has completed 143 laps and is 6 laps behind the leader. I have been lapped at least twice by the Jaguar, the slowest car in the race and am about to be lapped again by the Mazda.

Lap 153, came out of the pits a little behind the Sauber, cranked the pace on the curves, drafted on the Mulsanne Straight, crashed into the Sauber and passed it on the corner. On lap 154 we were behind the Nissan, same plan, track it down, draft and pass. Mission accomplished, lost the position when the car went off at Mulsanne Corner. Caught the Nissan again at Indianapolis, made the move at Arnage and completed the pass just before the Porsche Curves. Lap 158 and we still have these cars behind us, we can beat them on pace, we can't win when my driver doesn't know where the brake is and my car is provided with used tires or factory seconds. About to pit & lose the positions, we will retire 7 laps down.

Fastest Laps

Sauber Mercedes C 9 ............. 3:11 935
Minolta Toyota 88C-V ............. 3:11.602
Mazda 787B ......................... 3:14.610
Nissan R39C (?)..................... 3:13.967
Jaguar XJR-9 ........................ 3:14.604
Minolta Toyota 88C-V ............. 3:06.792

Fastest Lap
Formula Gran Turismo ........... 2:59.764 by Mustang Mystic

On the game menu it tells you to be patient (check the wording) but I am more than a third of the way through the race and after 147 laps my driver still hasn't realized that there is a big wall at the end of the Mulsanne Straight and you have to slow down for the corner. My driver just got around the corner properly about 3 times so far, when he is behind another car and crashes into it at the corner. This is how the AI driver set a time only a second slower than mine. Even if my driver used a little more speed on the Mulsanne Straight and slowed down enough for the Mulsanne Curve, there is not enough time to overtake the leader. Patient my ass! I'm about to pull the memory card, shut off the console and go to bed. I can't tolerate bullshit.

I solved the problem the same way I solved problem races in GT3, I used the Formula Gran Turismo car I won in the 24 Hours at Nurburgring. I took the first few stints to take the lead & build enough of a lead to survive pitstops before I turned the car over to the AI driver
Lap 50 I lapped the Sauber & the Toyota putting the entire field 1 lap down. By Lap 54 the Jaguar is 2 laps down. Lap 85, passes the Sauber again to put the entire field 2 laps down. The Sauber gets the lap back when we pit on Lap 86 but this is temporary. The AI driver retakes the position on the Main Straight on Lap 90, this time it is permanent.

Crazy Shit
Lap 75: For unknown reason half way down the Mulsanne straight with no traffic for 2 sectors in either direction, the car suddenly steers itself into the Armco barrier, instead of steering back onto the road surface the car continues steering into the barrier, grinding along it until speed is down to 30 or 40 m.p.h. Tire life is 5 complete laps and this took place on Lap 4 of the stint so tire wear was not an issue.
Lap 98: The car again steers into the Armco, this time grinding its way down to 15 m.p.h.
Lap 99: Car enters the pits a lap early despite my cancelling the pit call. Both fuel and tires were good for one more lap.
Lap 111: Again on the Mulsanne straight, grinding down to 15 m.p.h.
Lap 113: Again on Lap 113, really polyphoney? You think this is racing? Crap like this is why I never bought another playstation or gran turismo game.
Lap 114: Again enters the pits a lap early without cause to.
Lap 161: Into the barrier and down to 15 m.p.h. again on the Mulsanne straight.
Lap 171: Into the barrier again, this time on the straight between Mulsanne and Indianapolis corners.
Lap 246: Into the barrier on the Mulsanne straight again. Was racing this stint on setting 2, cruise, to try extending tire life.
Lap 263: Car goes nuts just before the Indianapolis curve, whirling like a drunken Dervish, crashing into walls on both sides of the circuit but very effective at losing time.
