Volkswagen - Lupo Cup Race Championship Race Format, 5 Races: Fuji Speedway 1990's Nurburgring Nordschleife Tsukuba Circuit Suzuka Circuit - Grand Prix Course Infineon Raceway - Sports Car Course Cars Permitted: All Lupo Models Tires: No Restrictions Winning Prize: 25,000 Cr Prize Car: Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe (Type-1) 1968 1st Place Prize Money: 5,000 Cr per race Overview The lighter weight Lupo Cup Car will be faster which can cause you problems on the straights if you choose the Lupo GTI Cup Car as I did in order to qualify both for the Lupo Cup and the GTI series (series name?). The main difference between the two models is their weight and the base Lupo has a decided advantage over the GTI. On long straights remember that Gran Turismo allows drafting and this can win or lose the race for you. Any time you are behind another car remember to draft on the long straights. The advice given here is for the GTI model but will apply to the quicker Lupo as well. I like looking for challenges in these games and using the GTI version of the Cup Car makes this series more of a challenge so, more challenging and more satisfying. I recommend this approach to the series. Race 1: Fuji Speedway 1990's 2 laps As always with Fuji the key is learning where to brake for the end of the main straight. It is worth the 5 credit entry fee to find your braking point. Qualify in the top three, and you should be able to win this race. Race 2: Nurburgring Nordschleife: 1 lap You will need a lap time under nine minutes. (verify this) I don't like spending 18 minutes qualifying for a 9 minute race so I run the race without qualifying. This makes for a very close race but I enjoy that. The Lupo Cup Cars will have a noticeable advantage over the Lupo GTI cup cars on the straights so you must win this race on the corners and either be leading by the final straight or in position to draft on it. Race 3: Tsukuba Circuit 3 laps The short lap length means you will want to start this race from pole position. Due to the short lap length you will not be able to build much of a lead on the brief twisty section and the Lupo's will close in on the GTI cars on the long straight but track position should keep them behind you and give you the win. The key to this course is using the superb brakes of these cars to brake late for corners,Turn 5 which ends as the tighter turn 6 in particular. When you get to the curbing for this corner, brake 1-1 1/2 car lengths after the curbing starts. This is where you will gain the lead you need for the main straight. Again, the 5 credits for a practice session would be well spent here to learn your braking point. Race 4: Suzuka: 1 lap This is one of the few series where I enjoy racing on the full Suzuka circuit. The Lupo Cup cars are fun to drive and Gran Turismo does not mess with you as much as usual making this race very enjoyable. Qualify on pole, get the hairpins right and have fun. The Lupo cars will be faster off the line so if you have a GTI it will be to your advantage to position yourself in front of the faster cars on the way to the first turn. If you lead at the first turn, you should be able to lead the entire race. If you get passed on the start you should be able to pass on the esses. About half way up the hill through the esses you will want to go down to third gear, if you are in automatic mode, blip the throttle here. Remember these are front wheel drive cars and do not have to follow the racing line completely. The racing line is made by rear drive cars which handle differently. Suzuka has a number of straights so if all else fails, draft, draft, draft! Your key corners: At the hairpin watch for the shadows on the right side of the course, brake at the last set of shadows. Spoon 1, brake late waiting until you reach the darker line through the corner. If you set it up right Spoon 2 may be flat out all the way up the hill, if you don't set the corner up right a safety blip of the throttle should suffice. If you aren't leading you will want to be towards the center of the course for drafting. For the final turn before the chicane move to the right and take it flat out using the curbs at the apex. For the chicane brake just before the shadow that makes a dark line across the track and play loose with the curbs through the chicane. As always, practice is advised; do you see a theme developing? Race 5: Infineon - Sports Car Course: 2 laps I always enjoy racing at infineon Sports Car Course and what do you need to say about it? The superb braking and cornering ability of the Lupo Cup Cars make a good thing better. An easy lap; brake lightly for the first corner and the next two should be flat out. At the top of the hill for Turn 4, the 90o Right hander brake about half way between the end of the curb and the beginning of the corner. Brake short and quick after entering the carousel then try drifting the rest of the way through it. At the halfway point brake about halfway through the braking area for Turn 7 hairpin then the back part of the course should be flat out although blipping the throttle at the start of a curve may help if you don't have it lined up right. Try braking at the last cone before the wall for Turn 11, the hairpin. If you cannot get a laptime under 2 minutes you are not ready for this race, go practice. You should qualify on pole and have an easy victory to make up for some of the more frustrating races in this series. Think of Infineon as your graduation gift from the series. |
