Midyans stand 1.5 meters on average, sexual dimorphism skewing females slightly taller than males. Midyans come in many patterns and colors, the most common being a single flat color and a mottled two-tone. Common colors include red, blue, yellow, black, and green in varying shades. While one or two tones are the norm, there exist a few novel phenotypes such as the exclusively female red-yellow-black Midyans, and the purple shades linked to high psionic aptitude and thus priesthood. Midyan skin is thin, and dries out easily. Though Midyans have a respiratory system built for land life, vestigial gills remain on the sides of their heads, an evolutionary relic. Midyans reproduce via internal fertilization, and lay small (1-3) clutches of leathery eggs. Midyans are herbivorous, and react negatively to traits seen as predatory in other sophonts. -Average Lifespan (Up to 300): 110 -Protean Alignment (Astral, Nether, Neutral): Neutral -Elemental Base (Carbon, Silicon etc): Carbon -Average ESPER level (1-7): The average ESPER of a Midyan is psi-zeta 5. However, due to a rigid caste system with very little movement between castes, each caste exhibits a different mean ESPER level. The common Midyan; laborers, corporate workers, the people who bear the brunt of the labor tend to exhibit ESPER levels from the rare psi-zeta 1, to the slightly less rare psi-zeta 5, pinning the average at slightly above psi-zeta 3. The military and administrative castes, made up of soldiers, officers, government officials, and scientists exhibit ESPER levels between psi-zeta 5 and psi-zeta 6, keeping them towards the average. The priestly caste exhibits the highest ESPER levels from very select mating, and very rarely falls below ESPER level psi-zeta 6. The average ESPER level of Midyan High Priests is psi-zeta 8, though that means many individuals fall above or below that ranking. Midyans almost exclusively manifest psi-zeta, though there are rare instances of psi-lambda manifestations. -Total Population: 28.2 billion +History: The Midyan species had trouble early on. They were large amphibious herbivores, and frequently preyed upon by creatures higher up on the food chain in the jungles from which they emerged. Midyans eventually developed tool usage and fire, and used that advantage to slaughter their predators, nearly driving them to extinction. Continuing that streak of violence, Midyan civilization was structured in tiny kingdoms who were at a constant state of war with eachother. Empires briefly existed and fell apart, with no major powers able to exist for long. As the kingdoms on the periphery gradually settled territory vacant of Midyans, they were able to hold more resources and raise more manpower than the central kingdoms. Eventually, the central kingdoms were subjugated by the periphery kingdoms. With the establishment of large stable nations who could support themselves on internal economies and trade, Midyankind entered an age of relative peace and further colonization. Given the lull in conflict, Midyans were able to invent philosophical reasons to kill eachother. Religion, nationalism, and resource disputes fueled another era of near constant strife that resulted in the formation of a new kind of structure for the Midyan world. Most of the previously independant kingdoms, who had fought by themselves, had been defeated and turned into puppets by an alliance of kingdoms who shared a religion. The world entered a new age of peace as the victorious kingdoms entered a golden age, and the losers were forcefully converted to the religion of the victors, had their cultures repressed until extinction, and had their lands settled by citizens from the victorious kingdoms. Slowly, the Midyans coalesced into a single state, unified by religion and culture. That single state, the Celestial Empire, moved from aristocratic to republican and theocratic thought. As citizens lived their life in peace, the government was in turmoil with the three factions in conflict with eachother. The republican faction was able to grab most of the power in the government, reforming the Celestial Empire into the Celestial Republic. As the years went by, more and more concessions were made to the still very important priestly class and the theocratic faction. Time went on and the roles of the theocratic and republican factions switched, the theocrats holding the majority of power and the republicans being forced into a position where they mainly only took care of the book-keeping and legal matters. The aristocrats, robbed of their previous power, lurk at the very bottom of the government, only able to plead to the more important theocratic and republican factions. Fragmentation between cultural and linguistic groups on Zochima is low, due to repressive policies by the Celestial Empire and preceding Ehuacalati Dynasty. However, there are clear divides between Midyans who inhabit Zochima, their homeworld, the core colonies in the Itil system, and the small, but growing group of interstellar colonists. The Republic began as a republic, with some religious influence from the priestly class. However, the priestly class began to seize powers from the bureaucracy. At this point in Midyan history, the functioning of the government can be summed up as such: the theocracy declare a war and order ships built and deployed, the bureaucracy allocates resources and manages the production of the ships, and the aristocracy pleads that some of the ships be named after famous members of the Ehuacalati dynasty. Within the last 100 years, the Celestial Republic established it's first interstellar colony. Achol is the first system Midyans have settled outside of their home system.
