When one thinks of missions, often the first thing to come to mind is the idea that every Christian should be a missionary in one form or another. This type of thinking is in actuality quite far from the truth. Missionaries are Christians who are sent by God to preach the Gospel in cultures that do not yet know Him. While all Christians are to support missions, in no way can all Christians be missionaries.

Unfortunately, most of the professing Christians really aren’t. True Christians are those that have the critical relationship with Christ that is vital to salvation. All Believers should accept the Bible as the holy inspired Word of God and preach the Gospel to those who haven’t yet heard.

What, then, is the Gospel? Simply put, it is what Christ preached about salvation, which is belief in Him alone to save you, and accepting that you are nothing without Him. Evangelism is a critical part of a Christian’s job, but one must be careful to not make salvation any more complicated than Christ Himself made it to Nicodemus.

One of the main difficulties in church mission work is the careless or sometimes even disdainful attitude from members. Part of it comes from the unsaved church-goers, who cannot hope to understand the importance of the things of God. Even the saved among us tend to struggle with it at times, largely due to our own human selfishness and pride taking a hit when missions comes up.

No matter the reason, before we can hope to change the image of missions in general, we must first present a biblical approach for why they are so critical this day in age.
