Old Testament Missions

Although the Old Testament doesn’t overtly mention the concept of missions, it is subtly interwoven throughout the text. One prime example is that of Noah, who preached of the coming flood to all around him. The fact that no one listened is of no importance- only that Noah was burdened enough for his fellow men to warn them of impending destruction.

God’s later covenant with Noah and his sons proves His concern and care not only for Jews, but to all people. When the Law was given to the nation of Israel, the symbolism in the priesthood was to show the Jews that they were to me the ‘Go-between’ for all other nations and God, just as the priests intervened on their behalf to God.

The temple itself, built for the worship of God, was also meant for the Gentiles as well. Solomon’s dedicatory prayer proves just that. The Jews wish to keep their Temple and their God all to themselves, but He makes it quite clear that they are to minister to the nations around them, not become a cult of themselves.

In the prophets we see God’s commission to Israel to be His witnesses throughout the world, one very appropriate since they were soon to be scattered across the globe.

That said, in the light of both testaments, one cannot expect missions in the Old to be in the same context as the New. Before Pentecost, God wanted Israel to be such an example that the other nations would see, and thereby come to Him. The apostles, however, were sent out into the world to preach and show the way to those who had not yet heard.
