Despite the Great Commission, given by Christ just before His ascension, the Church for the Gentiles didn’t exactly get a running start. The Pharisees had so brainwashed the Jewish people as a whole that the Apostles just couldn’t fathom preaching to the outside world for several years, despite the appearance of the Holy Spirit. The first move was made by Phillip when he witnessed to the Ethiopian eunuch, who we can only assume went on to preach the Gospel in his home country. Peter made the next with Cornelius, the Roman centurion. Although showing progress, this wasn’t all that needed to be done. The book of Acts describes the church at Antioch, unique in its multi-cultural congregation. It was this church that actually managed to send out missionaries- albeit ten years after Christ’s command to do so. It was about this time that the apostle Paul was converted and called by God to reach the Gentiles. Although Paul and Barnabas didn’t make it very far from home on the first journey, it was still a groundbreaking trip. While traveling through the empire, Paul had to pause and settle the controversy of Jewish Law vs. Gentile salvation, however it was Peter that gave the winning argument. Despite many arguments, uproars, hostility and even splits, God still got the Gospel out to many nations, using the many (as well as petty) human disagreements to spread the missionaries farther and in different directions. |
