The ‘call’ to the mission field is not always as direct and specific as some would have us believe. To state it better, the call to a specific country is not so common. Missionaries will feel the desire to go serve, but not always do they end up where they started out going. Adoniram Judson was more or less booted out of India so God could use him in Burma. Livingston didn’t even set out for Africa, but the world was definitely impacted for God because of him. The important thing is that they went, and didn’t turn away because their first choice was rejected. The smaller points of the distinction between a ‘call’ and a ‘gift’ of missionary-ism is highly debated, but there can be no doubt that there are definitely some specifically sent overseas, and some that are meant to stay at home and support those that are gone. Motivation plays no small part in the broad scope of missions. It starts with God’s ultimate motive of saving us by His love. Paul also was motivated by love (of Christ) and became the greatest missionary of the early church. Where love doesn’t always extend, compassion seems to pick up the slack. Those who may not start out unconditionally loving the people they are with are at the very least concerned about their final destination, thus motivating them to preach to all who will hear. God may not always have you end up where you set out to go, but be assured that He will use you wherever He places you. |
