Missions in the Reformation

While the Roman Empire was the most focused on, as the Christians were majorly in the heart of the Empire itself, they slowly started to spread throughout the rest of Europe.

The movement started when Constantine declared Christianity the official religion. Doubtless many professed simply to save their skin, but with this freedom many started preaching freely.

From Rome, it appears that the first movement was toward Africa, although we don’t know who the pioneer there was. After Africa, they moved toward the Middle East and into Syria. Some years later, Gregory the Illuminator took the Gospel to Armenia. After moving south into Arabia and back across Northern Africa, persecution once more broke out, and although it didn’t put a stop to the missions, it did slow them down quite a bit.

Christianity made its way gradually north through Europe, finally reaching Scandinavia and Britain and taking root there. Not too long after, the Muslims took over the Holy Land, prompting the Crusades and severely crippling the Byzantine Christians (or what they called Christianity).

Gradually, Roman Catholicism emerged, and with it came even more missionaries, Francis of Assisi being one of the more well known. Slowly the Protestants began to split off from the Catholics, and men such as Peter Waldo and John Wycliffe emerged.
