So tomorrow we start our annual missions conference. Hoo-Rah. Only not. Apparently, attendance is self reported, and if this is true, I'm going to be a wretched little Christian and skip as much as I can in the name of sleep, homework, and sanity. It's bad enough that the student body in general is getting on my nerves, I don't need more interaction to torture myself further.

Seriously, everyone always gives so much attention to overseas mission work, but if you aren't called over to some other country, it's as if you seriously missed something, or aren't spiritual enough, or aren't a good enough Christian. I'm sick and tired of it.

Mind you, I'm not bashing missions, they have their place.

BUT I HATE HAVING MISSIONARIES FUCKING SHOVED DOWN MY THROAT!!

I'm not called overseas. God and I have been through this before. For a while, I actually wanted to go somewhere. Someplace exciting, like the Amazon, or the Serengeti. God and I have had many serious discussions on the matter, and that is not where He wants me. I'm ok with that. I harbor no bitterness toward those who get to go. It's just not my calling. However, the fact that I'm not going doesn't make my calling any less important, does it? Why am I suddenly a back burner to those going into missions work? Why do they get major conferences at a Bible college, and not those who do wonders stateside? Why is the idea of being a youth worker suddenly wasting my life and intellect? Why is it that when God tells me to do something, everyone argues, as if He sent them a postcard as well?

-sigh- I don't hate missions. I really don't. I hate the fact that they are held up as the pinnacle of all spiritual callings, that if you are a missionary, you are blessed by God indeed. Can't I be blessed by God if I'm trying to help broken and abused kids? Isn't that just as much missions as going to Djibouti to translate Ecclesiastes?

God gives callings and orders to people to match with the gifts He has given them... I don't understand why we turn it into a competition to see who gets the better job...

God... save me from Your people...

"God save us from half the people trying to do God's work"

as a called missionary, I know it's hard, but people in the states, or other "safe" countries are just as much a missionary as any of us. "Go ye into ALL the world and preach the gospel" not "go ye to unsafe places and get lauded for all you do" or "go ye to the places that make others miserable" all means all, and that means here too. the Nazarene's have made the United States and official missions field, and I think we should all follow suit. it's not missions just because it's out of the country. it's missions because we go with a mission. I have a mission now, and I work with youth. I will have a mission when I graduate and seek to actually go overseas. my classmates will have missions when they seek jobs here in the states. to reach the people, tell the people the gospel. if you do that, you are a missionary.
