I posted this on another forum, and I though that I would repost it here so I didn't have to re-write it out, so here is my "Experience At Theatre Fest".

Theatre Fest at ISU

Well, on January 12th I got back from Theatre Fest at Illinois State University. I had a great time, and I though that I would go through my days with you guys here. Some starter things, if you were part of a play that I saw, I am going to give my honest opinion about it, good or bad. And how Theatre Fest work... You need a ticket to se the show that you want to see. When you register, you get a couple of tickets, random tickets. You must trade them with either staff members or other people to get a ticket to a show that you want to see. I hope that made sense.

Arrived at my school and left at 6:10am, because we are a whole 2.5 hours away from Bloomington/Normal. Nice long bus ride, a lot of sleeping going on. We arrived at the Bone Student Center at like, 9:15am, registered, and got our ID and tickets. I had 3 tickets to "The Fantasticks" and one to "Little Shop Of Horrors". I kind of regret giving the Little Shop ticket away to a classmate, because the group of three that I was with wanted to see it later on that day. After some trading and dealing, we each had tickets to "Snow Angles" and "Twelve Dreams" both on that day. After wandering around campus for 1.75 hours, we went to the theatre "Snow Angles" was at, and saw it. It was an ok show. It was about this "emo" girl ho doesn't like society finding a girl laying in the snow during a snow day. Her English class needs to keep a journal, so she writes about finding her in the journal. Her classmates take her journal and read about this snow girl. Then they start seeing this girl. That's just the general basis of the show. Either way, it was just ok for me. After seeing that, we went to the Watterson tower food court to eat. We stayed there for about 1.75 hours doing nothing, and we still had a couple of hours until "Twelve Dreams", we looked at anything we could go see. We found "The Greatest Generation" and went to go see that. It was a 30 minute one act about the lives of some people during WWII. That one was also ok, but had some bad casting. I really don't mean offence by say thing this, but it really doesn't work when a short white boy says "Don't worry little sis, I'll be back soon" to a taller black girl. From seeing that we went to see "Twelve Dreams". that one was the second best one that we saw. It was about this girl who has been having these strange dreams, and writes them down and gives them to her father, a psychologist. Through the play, her father and his friend try to figure out what happens to her. At the end of the play, she is alive, but some of my friends think that if the play went a bit longer, she would have died. Something funny that happened during that play is when the dad was walking down the stairs, one of the stairs broke on him, and he had to jump to catch himself. From there we had to go to our hotel to check in and drop off our crap. At that point we found out that one of the students made it on a little improv team of 14, and will be performing later. Then I got a call from an old school buddy that I haven't seen in 3 years, and planed to meet up. He then told me that he also made it to the improv thing, and unknowingly became friends with the girl from my school that is doing improv. We went back to the campus grounds and got pizza and just hung out until the improv thing. It was pretty funny and very risqué at times. At midnight, we went back to the hotel, and chilled and slept.

We woke up, had breakfast and headed to the campus grounds. We got tickets for "Dancing at Luglnasa". I'm not sure on the spelling for that, btw. The show was about 5 unmarried Irish sisters and their lives in summer. We didn't like this play at all. Most of us fell asleep in the first act. When we read the description, it looked good, because we say the words "Drunken" "Irish" and "Pagans". All the play was were the sisters sitting in a little room chatting about life, and maybe getting up to walk around. That's about it. After leaving from that we went to the Bone Student Center, had lunch, and went into the Braden Theatre to see the All-State play, "Parade". When we got into the theatre, we were all in awe. It was the biggest f'in theatre I have ever seen. The musical "Parade" was about this Jewish man who is a factory owner living in Atlanta, Georgia 10 years after the Civil War. One night a 13-year old girl that worked at the factory was murdered in the factory. The police arrest him, thinking he was the murder. After being in jail for 2 years, and almost free, an angry group of people kidnap him from jail, and lynch him. "Parade" was just awesome. The lighting was superb, the set design and scene changes were flawless, and the singing/acting was perfect. If you get the chance to see a show there, take it. It was amazing. After it was over, we left, had diner at Steak & Shake, and went home.

And that was my experience at Theatre Fest at ISU. I plan to go again next year, when it is hosted at University of Illinois. If you get a chance to go, I would really recommend it, it was very fun and informative, and it was nice to see what other schools all over the state are doing. So, there we are.

I'm also a crew guy. My girlfriend is the actress.

Theatre Fest is the biggest theatre HS convention in Illinois if I remember correctly.

I was busy most of the time. The whole "hanging out" before the improv show was like three hours, because we didn't have any tickets to any shows the two sessions before improv. :o
