Euron Greyjoy, Fourth of His Name, was a weak man. Worse, he was a weak ruler. During a raid in the Westerlands a year after taking the throne at the age of twenty-five, Euron took a sword blow to his back. Death would have been a kinder fate to Euron, for he was confined to a chair for the rest of his life. Euron was nursed back to health by a salt-wife he had taken on the raid. Through his convalescence, he fell in love with her. Soon after his return to health as it was, he sired a bastard with her, given the name of Loreon Pyke. Euron’s devotion to his salt-wife proved detrimental to his reign. The Ironborn did not look kindly upon a king who spent all his time rutting with a blonde mainlander, and as Euron could not lead raids any longer, his subjects began to plot against him. The heads of the sworn houses descended upon their lord with desire to do him harm. There, Alannys of House Harlaw saw opportunity in the wrecked body of Euron Greyjoy. She stood before the throng of angry men and claimed to all that Euron had proposed to unite the Houses of Greyjoy and Harlaw once again through marriage. Waiting but a few moments, Euron sealed his fate by admitting the truth of Alannys’ statement. The head of House Harlaw, understanding the privileges that came of this relation, agreed to the marriage. Nine months later, Alannys gave birth to Dagon Greyjoy. House Harlaw reaped the many honors of relation to the Greyjoys. As protectors of the Iron Islands, the heads of the Harlaw houses were chosen to lead raids and expeditions. Few returned alive. Eventually, as the heads began to see the honors as invitations to death, they began to decline the positions. Euron (at Alannys’ behest) proclaimed Harlaw as traitors, arresting the males and seizing their property. As the last free man with Harlaw blood, Dagon was named Lord of Harlaw Island at ten, his arms quarterly, first and fourth sable, a kraken Or, second and third argent, a scythe sable. Seven years later, Euron Greyjoy died in his bed. Lady Alannys did not allow the body to be examined post-mortem by maesters, and the corpse of Euron was returned to the deep. Dagon Greyjoy stood to take his father’s title, but was opposed by a larger man from a cadet branch of the Greyjoy family. The two fought, Dagon wielding Nightfall, the Valyrian steel blade of Harlaw provenance, for the first time publicly. Dagon swiftly disarmed his rival, who claimed that he would never yield to him. Dagon rushed over to him. After knocking him to the ground, Dagon pried his mouth open with Nightfall and ripped out his tongue with his hand. Throwing it to the ubiquitous barking dogs, Dagon looked for any further challengers. None stepped forward. Thus began the reign of Dagon Greyjoy, Second of His Name, Lord Reaper of Pyke and Harlaw. |
