The events take place in the United States of America in Minnesota in Minneapolis and St. Paul, also known as the Twin Cities. The population is about 3.5 million living in the cities and surrounding areas. The zombie outbreak began on June 7, 2008, but it was on such a small scale that it unnoticed by the general population for several hours. By the time it became notable, 5% of the local populace had already been infected. It is currently June 8, and 20% of the people in the metropolitan area are already turned, with another 40% dead. The zombies are fairly aggressive and some are able to use simple tools, a few even able to use firearms. Infection only seems to occur with a direct bite. The power is out and the phone lines are inactive. Most local police and national guard units were ordered to take care of the zombies, but they were unprepared for the massive numbers of enemies they were facing. Heavy casualties resulted. All order has ceased and some people are taking advantage of the chaos by taking whatever they can get their hands on. The remaining people are wary and distrustful. Your group is currently in a downtown area in St. Paul. You are in a gas station and convenience store. It is currently 3:00 in the afternoon. The zombies are less active during the day, though there are still dozens walking around the streets. The convenience store has what you would normally expect to find, banks of refrigerators stocked with beverages, including some alcohol. The shelves are stocked with non-perishable food. There are a few souvenir t-shirts showing a picture of a mosquito and with the words “Minnesota state bird” written on them. There’s a man behind the counter, it looks like the cashier/attendant, who is both dead and gnawed on. There’s also a bathroom and an area labeled “Employees Only.” It is locked.
