Leaves in the River I heard it behind me, coming. It had been chasing me for… it had been chasing me for… well a long time. Had to have been at least three… no five days. I hadn’t been able to sleep at all during that time. I came to the river and sat down on the bank. I had to take a nap… no a break, just a break. I looked in the water. It was autumn, had to be. There were leaves floating down river. Slowly they came, one at a time. One by one by one by one by… I felt the water in the cellar door rising. I tried to open the trap door, but it wouldn’t budge. Already the cold water was flowing higher and higher. I felt a little go into my mouth as I struggled to keep my head above water. I was going to drown. No, no, no… I startled awake. Still at the side of the river. I had rolled a bit, and water was lapping at my side. So the cellar had just been a dream. I needed to get moving before… Before what? There had been something, I was sure of it. I got the impression of a beast, no a demon. It was stalking with me, playing with me. That’s it! I was running from the demon beast. I stood up, and everything went black. It had gotten me. No, it was just the blood draining from my head. I’d stood up too quickly. Be fine in a second. Then I could run from the, yeah, the demon beast. I moved downstream, following the leaves. The brown leaves, yellow leaves, orange leaves. I slowed and came to a stop. How far had I come. Had to have been a mile, maybe two. I spared a glance back. There was the spot I had lain, no more than thirty feet back. Had to keep moving, had to keep. I fell down. Maybe if I just stayed here a second I’d regain my strength. I couldn’t get up anyway. My arms were too tired, my legs were too tired… my chest was too… I walked inside the mansion and headed down the hallway. There was a banquet hall with lots of food on the table. Steaks, and lobster, and pasta, and cake, and hamburgers. I was so hungry. I sat down, and then the room began sniffing, and sniffing. It was… It was going to eat me. The food was just a distraction. I screamed and… And I woke up again, still at the river. The sniffing sound was still there coming from above the riverbank. It was… it was the thing. I crawled behind a log, trying to hide. It came down and looked around. I calmed my breathing, trying not to let it hear me. It sniffed the air and looked around. It turned and looked almost at me. It had to have seen me. It came up to the log batted it with an appendage, and walked the other way. Maybe it didn’t see me. It just sat on the bank, watching the leaves for a bit. So long as I stayed cool… so long as I stayed calm… it would… it would do something that helped me… leave… maybe… I closed my eyelids not wanting to look. And they felt so heavy that… I couldn’t… I was standing in a boat on the ocean, the waves tossing the boat lightly. I got the impression for a second that this was a dream, but it couldn’t be. And then the thought went out of my mind. There was some sort of a ship on the horizon… * * * “What happened to him?” said the cop, looking at the body on the ground. “He went off his medication.” said the psychologist. “He’s been one of my patients for a while, suffering from schizophrenia. When he doesn’t take his medication he begins to hallucinate, and he can’t sleep, which just leads to compounded problems. He just runs himself into exhaustion like he did here.” “Whaddya want me to do with him?” “I just need to give him this shot and he’ll be better, at least when he wakes up. If you could just take him to his home we can deal with him there.” “Can do.” |
