James started to run towards her, suddenly doubling over and retching. He smiled inwardly- nothing would come up- he hadn't eaten in a day. Struggling to his feet, he stumbled over to Kerri.

"Uh... should I be worried?" he asked her quietly, while patting her on her back. "Kerri?" He pushed a little harder, starting to frantically rock her back and forth. "KERRI!" He didn't stop to think, didn't once consider that he had only just met her, in fact, just witnessed one of the most inexplicable moments he had ever seen, and probably would ever see. He rolled her over and began searching her neck for a pulse- he gasped when he couldn't one, but he quickly realized that she probably wouldn't have one, being the zombie hybrid thing that she was.

He came to a sudden realization- he couldn't do anything.

"No... NO! NOT AGAIN!" He pounded the floor next to her, pain clearly etched on his face. "WHY? ..... why....." He slumped next to her and hung his head in his arms. Resolve suddenly gripped him, and he lifted her up, he moved over to the door. After a few solid kicks, it began to give, and he tumbled through, shielding her as best he could. As he started off down the hall with her, he suddenly became aware of the familiar sound of incessant moaning.

He reached for his pistol, realizing that he had left it in the room. He set Kerri down, and bolted into the room, retrieving it. Ducking through the door, he saw a zombie standing over Kerri, and rage suddenly consumed him- they were responsible, and that thing... that thing in human guise- it controlled them.

Letting loose a guttural ululation, James emptied an entire clip into the creature's torso, but he wasn't finished. Leaping at the zombie- now falling back due to the barrage- he pulled out his combat knife. In one motion, he sliced open the creature's gut, sweeping around, arm extended, he caught the thing in the side of the head, and watched with grim pleasure as the light died in its eyes. He stabbed away at it as it fell to the floor- he knew it was dead, but he was now never going to be convinced, not since that thing....

Returning to Kerri, he picked her up again, and started at a run towards what he though might be the room they were in before. As he walked, he felt sickened by the blood that had soaked through his jacket. He made a mental note to ditch it or clean it later.
