New here, so...yeah. Hi. Heh. Anyway, I have plenty to say on this. Hope y'all don't mind: First of all, I recognize that the Trapped series undoubtedly took a great deal of effort. There is something undeniably attractive about the story and the characters. I can't explain it but it keeps me coming back. And that's saying something. That being said, here are my thoughts on each installment individually: TRAPPED - This would have to be my favorite installment out of the three, and the reason I got hooked in the first place. Dan Mcneely is an interesting and fun character. He comes off as intelligent with a good sense of humor. He isn't dry or boring. His voice actor (Edwyn Tiong) makes him come alive in wonderful ways. Not surprising since Mr. Tiong has been in the AVAing scene for quite a while with some experience under his belt. This installment would also have to be Mr. Majewski's best and closest attempt at the dramatic atmosphere. There were times when I felt on edge and afraid of being discovered. I felt the danger that loomed in being caught and sympathy for the guy who couldn't even remember his own name. The puzzles and mini games were entertaining, as well. I'm not a fan of first person shooters (I hate them, in fact) but I think it really added to the heightening sense of urgency to survive as you defend yourself by shooting your would be killers in the darkness of night. And it occurs at an awesome moment--a time when you thought you'd escape with your life. And I absolutely love the way it ended on a dark note. Wonderful. PURSUIT - This was probably the worst addition to the trilogy. The focus shifts to Dialla (someone I have virtually no interest in). She never struck me as a very interesting character but, I suppose in her defense, she didn't get much screen time in the first game. We are introduced to her and her utterly inept boyfriend, Mickey Lee. If Dialla is boring then Mickey is the height of monotony. It doesn't help that his voice actor brings nothing to the character. He has no real qualities of his own. We know nothing about him beyond him being Dialla's boyfriend, that he's a fairly devout Christian and lacks any real intelligence. The most obvious example of the last point is when he descends into the sewers alone. He made no effort to call back up or have someone watch his back. If he had allowed Dialla to accompany him (instead of doing his stupid 'male protect female' shtick) he may have lived. But Mickey didn't respect Dialla as a partner. If this is what he was going to do then he should have been paired up with somebody else on the job. Simple as that. He deserved to die. That being said--on a personal note--I laughed when Dialla cried over Mickey's death. I realize it was meant to inspire tears and sadness but the drama felt ridiculous in light of the fact that Mickey brought it upon himself. The puzzles were the most crippling blow to this installment. They were horrible and nonsensical. The banana-rope-knife-glue thing is not cute. It's not even funny. It was random, out of place and frustrating for people who couldn't figure it out. Mr. Majewski may have been laughing but I'm sure there were people who weren't. :/ ESCAPE - For me this installment falls (quality-wise) between TRAPPED and PURSUIT. It's not as good as TRAPPED but definitely an improvement from PURSUIT. We are, once again, reduced to playing as Dialla. However, her charcter shows growth here. Dialla grows a spine and becomes determined to do what has to be done to take down McNeely and the gang. She actually shows some semblance of being a cop/detective. Her voice actor (Kira Buckland) does a great job with what she's given. She brings Dialla's suprise, horror, determination and sadness to life. There were times when Mr. Majewski attempts more stabs at drama but falls short. When Dialla is left in her cell with Mickey's body she grieves over his loss and the loss of their friendship. But the structure of the lines are not well written and give the scene an awkward feeling (somewhere along the lines of "How could you take our friendship away?"). And the writing suffers still in the scene where Dialla and McNeely exchange words at the beginning and Dialla asks, "Why did you...destroy his life?" (in reference to Greunbaum [sp?]) when "Why did you kill him?" would have worked just as well, if not better. The puzzles were more reasonable this time around (closer to TRAPPED) and were entertaining enough. It really only falls short when you reach the final room and McNeely makes no real effort to hide the chips. Most of them are lying around in fairly obvious places. It's as if he got lazy and tired of playing the game, which may have been the case. Whatever the reason it lowers playing quality a bit. On a final note, the revelation that Dialla was the leader of the gang was a bit difficult to believe. People were exected to believe this from a chick who complained about getting her nails dirty and who breaks down and cries? Perhaps the stuff she took (which erased, altered or modified her memories) could have helped to alter her personality to some degree. Who knows. Okay, then. Hear are my thoughts on the idea of STRANDED: I think it is the completely wrong direction to go in. I feel that there is something to leavng McNeely's and Dialla's fates unexplained. It lets the players' minds reel with possibilities and there is strength in that. If Mr. Majewski wants to add to it I suggest not going ahead in time but back--into the past! I suggest he creates a game that takes us into the days where Dialla was in charge of the gang. I say this because I still feel that there is so much unaccounted for and unexplained as far as people being who, what, where and why. Questions that might be good to address would be the following: "What was Dialla like in those days? Was she ruthless? Harsh?" "What was Dialla's relationship like with McNeely?" "How and why did Mickey join the gang?" "Why did Mickey leave the gang?" "How did Mickey cover his tracks/re-make his life in the fashion that allowed him to work in law enforcement? Do the police know of his past involvement if he did not cover this up? Do they want to use his prior knowledge to infiltrate the gang? Does he let them?" "How did Dialla end up working as a cop/detective? And why is she paired up with Mickey if he was once a part of the gang and may recognize or remember her? Is it possible that Mickey knew who she was from the start? Did the police want to keep Dialla close to Mickey so that anything she remembered could help them (her being the leader and all) and, thus, allowed the two to work together?" "How did the gang get a hold of the inorgamzics (sp?)" And so on. These are just a few things that could be examined and would give tons of material for a story of the past. I feel most people won't agree with me since they are dying to know what has become of these people (Dialla, McNeely, etc.). But I still think it's the best course of action. STRANDED feels like it would just drag the story on more than it needs to be. Unless, of course, Mr. Majewski could execute it in a manner that could make it feel otherwise. That's my two cents. Some of the information may not be totally accurate (it's been a little while since I played, I'll admit) so anyone is welcome to correct anything I may have made a mistake on. Thank you. That is all. XD Edited by Neve, 2 Mar 2009, 12:51 AM.

I will admit mickey's voice is a bit, out of the ordinary and bland, but it's not like Oh look, a guy died. How sad. And i will admit though, i never did like the wording in You destroyed his life! But i didn't think that pursuit was that bad. Me thinkies yous a sore loser

@ARAZEC: Thanks for the welcome! Well, we don't have to see eye to eye on the banana-rope-knife-glue deal. You think it's funny and I don't. Simple as that. Mickey's voice is boring and lifeless. That's what's up with it. @Luemas: Well, I do think it's that bad. But we don't have to agree on that. And how am I a sore loser? I beat the game plenty of times, so it wouldn't be that. And my life is just fine and I'm happy with it--if that's what you meant. I'm not miserable in any way. XD Otherwise your "yous a sore loser" comment makes no sense (that, and your grammar is awful). Thank you for giving me wonderful insight into life. Now i can write hundreds of page long stories! Or not. Yeah I know mate, i'm just saying, hence the horrendous grammar. And sometimes i purposefully lapse into whatever accent i'm saying now. So yeah. I have translators, they're expensive though... Anyhow I'll gain coherence for a while. Maybe. |

haha, fair dinkum. You can have your accent back. I don't know enough of it anyway. I think people in my school just think i'm mumbling incoherencies. I really like the words sentient and coherent lately. Not sure why. I'll try not to end sentences with mate... It's so fun though! |

Actually, I'm kinda with Neve on this one. "Pursuit" was really not all that great. It just felt so incredibly random at points... maybe the best part was when we were walking around Dialla's room looking for things. It had us find out different things about her. But the banana thing was not cute, funny, or even remotely probable. I don't like using walkthroughs, but I don't see how else you were supposed to get that one. And Mickey and Dialla really didn't go well... you feel even less interest for Mickey than for Dialla because you know him for even less time. Granted, it's loads better than anything I could do, and the skeleton on the rope was one of the creepiest things I'd seen. And to some extent, I did enjoy it as a continuation of "Trapped." I guess it just had a lot to live up to and feel utterly flat. "Trapped" was cool, and undoubtedly the best. I got to like McNeely, and I seriously didn't believe he was a criminal at first. I took the title to mean something like he was trapped in his own little world of destruction. Which obviously isn't the case, as we see later. But it was interesting starting out thinking you're the hero as usual, and slowly finding out the clues to your own crime. You find out you're really a pretty nasty guy. I think it might almost be better to focus on Dan for more games. I kinda wonder how he got back into the gang after "Trapped"... it seems sorta weird how someone who doesn't even remember that he was a criminal would jump right back into it... especially since he doesn't seem to exhibit a very criminal-like mindset while you're playing him. But then, if Dialla was a double agent on the police force the whole time, how is it she remembered the acting life on the force and not the real one on the gang? I mean, you think she would've picked up on it sooner. |

Well now, I've had my reading quota for the day. I think the "destroyed his life" line was actually perfect there. In case you didn't remember, there was a finger in Greubum's wallet. Meaning that McNeely probably ripped off all of Greubum's fingers, and then threw him in the air duct you find him in in -TRAPPED-. Very gruesome. I agree with most of what was said about Pursuit though. The puzzles in that game were completely random (*cough*bananaropefishingrod*cough*), and Mickey Lee was fun to hate (sounded like his VA had a cold), and also McNeely was a lot more fun to play as than Diala. Having the Antagonist as the Protagonist is just a cool move. However, -Stranded- needs to be a continuation, not some prequel. And I still firmly believe that Diala never led the ArmorGameses, but McNeely just wanted to get her to like him. |
