I found this story in my devotional. I thought it would be a perfect way to start a lesson.

Politeness goes far; yet costs nothing

In 1865, after Ulysses S. Grant had moved his occupying army into Shiloh, Tennessee, he ordered a seven o' clock curfew for the city. One distinguished Southern lady, a Mrs. Johnson, was seen walking near the army's downtown headquarters near the curfew time.

General Grant approached her and said, "Mrs. Johnson, it's a little dangerous out there. I'm going to have to ask two of my officers to escort you home."

She replied determinedly, "I won't go."

Grant smiled, went back in to his headquarters, and returned a few minutes later, wearing an overcoat covering his insignia and rank, and therefore the fact that he was a Northerner.

"May I walk with you, Mrs. Johnson?" he asked.

"Why, yes," Mrs. Johnson replied, nearly blushing, "I'm always glad to have a gentleman as an escort."

Mrs. Johnson would walk with a man she saw as a gentleman even though she would not walk with a Union solider. Good manners and genuine politeness go a long way toward "covering" many of our faults, mistakes, and differences.

That's a mighty wicked place. Tilt-a-whirl's okay, but the rest is pure wicked.
