Jesus's first miracle was when he turned water into wine. Back in Jesus's day, the reception to a wedding lasted a week. You would serve the strongest and best wine first, then when the guests taste buds began to go nub you would serve the weaker wine. Jesus saved the groom's reputation because it was bad if you ran out of wine at the reception. The wine that Jesus made was so good that the professional wine taster who tasted it told the groom that he had made a mistake and should have served this wine first. I believe it is alright but you should not drink to much. The reason why people in Jesus's day drank wine was because the water was unsafe to drink. People went bathing in it and probably peed in it, so they used wine as an alternate drink. It was not like grape juice because the only way it would ferment is by using alcohol Jesus once said: "John the Baptist did not drink or eat, yet when he proclaimed the word of God you considered him crazy. Yet I come to you as a drunk and a glutton and you believe me." I forgot what the verse is so that was a paraphrase. but I will be happy to pull out my New Testament notes from a college class I took this summer and tell you the exact verse. I do however find that wine is not a good thing to use at the Lord's supper because as soon as the service is over all the little kids find the leftover juice and gulp it up. I think a bit of drinking is okay, so long as you remain in control. I think everyone has a different amount of alcohol that they can handle. For some people it's quite a bit. For others it's none at all. There are plenty of Bible verses that discourage drinking, but I argue that they warn you to be cautious. Also, since some people can't handle alcohol, you should be careful about drinking around them. Some people say that because of all the dangers, Christians should just avoid it altogether. This is a fine decision, but I don't think you should insist that everyone else follow it. On a personal note, I don't actually drink alcohol, despite my username. It's not because I feel it's morally wrong, but because I hate the taste. |

I can't remember, isn't being drunk one of the seven deadly sins? T'would seem so. My half-brother's dad was a drunk, so he decided he would never touch alcohol. Though, it became a problem between him and his girlfriend, who drank,(now wife) so he occasionally drinks but I don't doubt for a second he will control himself. I wasn't sure wether or not I would drink, then at my brother's wedding without thinking I asked my grandmother if I could sip her wine. She let me, (ticked my mother off, lol. ) so I guess I don't mind if I ever take a sip of alcohol again. |

I am not outrightly against drinking, but if you are asking the question how drunk is too drunk you probably drink too much. I do not feel you should be drunk. Also a random comment; I once heard that the wine used in the Lord's supper in the Bible was likely not acoholic since they used yeast to ferment wine at that time, and Jews were to get rid of all yeast for the passover. Drunkenness is not ok, God says so. It is a sin in itself so when you do it you are doing something bad. Ipersonally don't drink because alcoholism runs deep on both sides of my family. I can't even allow that to take hold of me in my life. |

Sorry that if I say things in a way that isn't exactly right. I admit that I just have too many negative experiences with alcohol to think reasonably on the subject. As to advice, I say if you have a problem with retaining control when it comes to anything in general you should just try to stay away from it. "Therefore, my dearest friends, flee from idolatry." (1 Cor 10:14) An idol is anything that you either put ahead of God in your life, or is more important to you than God. If alcohol is something that is more important to you than God you should flee from it. If it isn't hindering you in your relationship with God then it is likely ok. I can't relly say exactly how drunk is too drunk, I've never been drunk. |
