Pandemic Chapter 1 Josh Miller scanned his I.D. badge and walked through the door. A full red alert had been pulled, and the nations best scientist all were pulled from their sleep to a meeting in Washington D.C. It was January 4th, 2009, and it was cold for Virginia, but even colder still was the fear in Josh’ heart. He walked quickly down the hall of the U.S. disease control center. Something bad had happened, something that had happened 91 years ago, had come, then left, leaving millions dead, worldwide. Most didn’t worry about it, I mean, how many die from the flu each year nowadays, especially with modern medicine and health care? But something horrible had happened to the A strain, that most scientists feared more than a 9.0 earthquake. Josh reached his seat and sat down. He had been flown from his town in Ohio, at 3 AM, and had been escorted almost all the way to his seat. He ran his hand nervously through his hair. The disease, known to those who remembered it, being mostly forgotten as just another disease to the public, was called the Spanish Lady, a cruel mistress like no other. Named for it for first originating in Spain, or at the very least, Spain being the first country to recognize it, in 1918, it had proceeded to sweep the globe, touching everywhere from the army camps, to the bustling cities, even to a secluded Indian town in Alaska. This disease, which had killed millions in the year it ran rampant, was back. This disease, which those who cared to remember, was worse than before, and no amount of flu shots or preparation could save you from it. Chapter 2 The leader of the national disease control center stood up and approached the podium, beginning, “Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I am sorry to drag you all out of bed at an ungodly hour, but as I’m sure you know by our agents briefing you on the way here, we have a crisis. It started in Scranton, Pennsylvania just last Friday.” A slide behind pointed to a rough location of Scranton, and a dot labeled Scranton, just to be safe. “Norman Frasiers’ wife, Emelyne called a local hospital in a panic, saying her husband was coughing up blood. They immediately sent out an ambulance, expecting to find an advanced case of tuberculosis. His fate would be death, but at the very least they could make it an easy death. However, when they took a blood sample they were unable to find the bacteria that causes it. Confused, they reviewed it further under an electron microscope and noticed the appearance of a common virus, influenza, but in a form that was completely new to them. They sent in copies of pictures they had taken of the virus to us, and we analyzed them, and cross-referenced them, to see if there were any other flu virus’ that had similar appearances and symptoms. What we found, was not what we wanted. We had lived for years in fear of return of the Spanish Lady, and it seemed she had gone away, but like rain, she came again another day. We sent the hospital staff an order to quarantine Emelyne Frasier, and find out if she had come in contact with any other people. But we soon canceled that order, realizing it was probably already spreading like wildfire. We had our first death of the Spanish flu, Norman, Sunday, and since then, three other cases have risen up. We don’t want to cause undue panic, but from the looks of it, the Spanish Lady has a full night ahead, and what a black night it is. (Ok guys, I know it isn't long, but I just need to think about where I'm going to take it from here. I'll probably write some more once I get an idea for plot... |

well the only thing i would change would be the language used to describe what actually happened. if the head guy is addressing the worlds best scientistics he wouldnt speak like that saying obvious procedural things in basic language when addressing his coleages (sry 4 bad spelling) you could say the same things as more of the main character thinking them so that the reader can follow the scientific jargon- i will pm you some plots |
