getting a slap is not so bad. And why would a lesbian slap you? If a gay man asked you out, would you punch him? ![]() If I go out with a girl because she's good looking, I respect her sense of style and individuality. to not ask out a girl you dig is to put her on a pedestal. you idolise her rather than treat her as a human being. going out on a date is not a life or death issue. You're doing it in order to get to know each other. And if you find you find out she's a lesbian, then you've maybe just made a new friend? There are plenty of reasons to like someone - who knows, maybe you'll find out she's a Trekky too! And you wouldn't have found that out if you thought 'i'll respect her as a person and NOT go out with her...' |

I fail to see how to ask someone out is anything other than respecting her as a person. And why do you guys only mention looks as a prerequisite for wanting to get to know someone better? Maybe she was reading a Sam Harris book, and I thought "Man we would have so much to talk about if I asked her out for a cup of coffee."? Many, maybe even most dates end in friendship (statistics vary wildly between cultures I guess). |

I like your point - you don't ask out objects, you ask out people. I talk about looks because I don't think you need a better reason to ask someone out (and a lot of people imply that it is the worst reason you could have to ask a girl out). I could ask her out because I was really impressed by a research paper she wrote or a speech gave, or a opinion she expressed, or a dance she performed or a kiss she gave me. There's nothing to stop you asking someone out because you've always wanted do an astronaut. Get over it, its just a date |

conradw: I was making the point that women are unpredictable. And, no, I wouldn't punch a gay guy. Also, I never said don't ask out a girl you dig, just take the time to get to know her a little better before you ask her out. concolor: I was saying that if you ask her out only because of looks it's bad. cw(x2): I never said asking someone out based solely on looks was bad, just that it's probably not the best idea. |

I think what And part of the reason I've never gone out with a girl is because I can't see the logicality of it yet, being only in HS. We're not going to rush off and get married at 16 are we? That would just be stupid. |

I would agree that if that's the only reason why you're dating I understand why you take it so seriously. This may be a cultural thing (and definitely an age thing, I wasn't dating much in Junior High) but for many people dating is not about courting your chosen future spouse, but a way to meet and get to know new people. Then it doesn't really matter if you don't know someone well beforehand if your date is how you get to know them

Well there's a difference between a potential partner and a chosen partner. And also varying degrees of potential. But I use the word "date" for any planned meeting that is not work-related. Maybe I have a broader definition of the term "date" than most people? Or maybe I'm just using the word wrong

i'm not trying to find a spouse. I'm trying to get to know someone for who they are. and hopefully enjoy myself while I get to know them. And maybe seduce them (if I find them attractive) |

Does she not get a say in that? Maybe she decided I wasn't such a good kisser after all. And If you need any more reason to think the law of some bronze-age tribesmen is meaningless today, just think, if parents sold you to be someone's wife without your consent, how angry would to you be? interestingly, in the very next breath, it says "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." |
