Finding inspiration, some people have trouble finding it I have troubles myself so I follow a routine I call Randomspiration…yeah I could have a better name, but I try to be as weird as possible. Prose 1. So first take a piece of paper. Write the numbers 1-10 in list style format. Then do a second list numbered 1-10 again. A third list numbered 1-3. A fourth list numbered 1-5 (leave a little bit of room beneath this one, 5-6 lines should do. 2. Close your eyes look down and when you open your eyes look around the room and list the first 10 objects/descriptions of objects you see. 3. Repeat step 2 in a different room 4a.Write down 3 cities you want to visit. (Regular) b. Now write down 5 cities and merge the prefixes and suffixes now you should have roughly 5-6 cities or towns or whatever. (Fantasy/Science Fiction) 5. Write down some things about yourself that you have issues with. Ex. Not being tall enough, being weird etc. 6. Now write down your dreams/hopes. Be as vague as possible How to use/Meaning for each step: 2. These are the descriptions of secondary characters, and some of their traits. Don’t be worried if you wrote down something like couch or television. Being creative is the key…and random is in the name. If you still aren’t getting it I have a few examples. Ex. Couch: Supporter of others, generally lazy, used, worn out, dirty, etc. Lamp: Burns out bright, lights up a room, broken, hand crafted, etc. To name these characters use part of the objects name and maybe a brand name (for that type of object), merge the names. You can use more than one term for the object as well. Ex. Speakers + Sony = Kassy Preone 3. These are descriptions and traits about yourself or your main character. Pick the coolest sounding name that you come up with. Ex. Couch + Sofa + Brick = H. Rico K. Fabuccos 4. These are destinations your character wants to reach by the end of the novel/story, or this can be the current setting. Part b is just made up cities for Fantasy/ Sci-Fi chances are that in your fantasy story, elves and goblins aren’t going to exist in Toronto. 5. These are challenges that your character has to overcome in the progression of the story. 6. This is where being as vague as possible come in handy, if you wrote being successful or buying a house. That is perfect. This is what your character strives for. If you wrote something like being MacDonald’s CEO, you can easily change it to something along the same lines. By removing the position and name, and writing owner of a major corporation. You could still be MacDonald’s CEO in the end but being vague helps with the creative juices. Owner of a major corporation gives you the option to be whatever you want to be. By: Jonah Mullen |
