Yes, even a persons perception of reality itself will affect his/her behavior towards others. Good/bad, right/wrong are as far as I see it just parts of a persons view of life, which is that individuals basis for any rational actions. |

but you said else where you beleive "most" humans including yourself want to help others and that this is a "natural instinct" where does this natural helping instinct come from and what good is it if our sense of good/bad is all different? |

Firstly, why would you assume that I know where these instincts/feelings come from? Why would you even assume that this is possible to know? I'm not saying it's good or helpful for anything. I'm saying that this is the way it seems to be as far as I can see. Of course many people have different views on what is good/bad, but there also seems to be a lot of similarities. The rule of reciprocity, often called the Golden rule, is found in some form in most cultures and has been described in philosophical and religious texts from several thousand years ago. If one wishes to establish a common ethical ground for everyone, I think it would be most useful to focus on the parts most of us can agree on and work our way from there. |

You are quite right, this is one of many things I do not now. Of course there are many places this might come from, and I find some to be more believable than others, but I do not even know if the alternatives I can think of are all the possible ones, much less if one of them is actually correct. |

That would not really be my first thought. In fact that seems quite elaborate as an explanation for the observed altruism in nature. Since I see similar behavior in other animals, my first assumption would be that we get it from the same place. From the top of my head I can think of a couple of general alternatives in an endless line of different possibilities: - People and animals just happen to be borne that way in the same way that sometimes when you roll a dice, you get the number 4. - Someone or something has implanted this into us as an instinct from way back, and it is carried along the generations. - Someone or something has taught us this (maybe ourselves) way back in history, and we've been teaching our young ones ever since. - Someone or something is implanting this into everyone when they are borne (maybe loosing a kid or two once in a while?). - Someone or something is implanting this into everyone at every single moment (maybe loosing a step or two once in a while?). - This behavior is a byproduct of some other process that is going on in us serving some other function. Personally, I have a vague preference for a combo of #2 and #3. Edited by Concolor, 23 Sep 2009, 09:07 AM.
