Let me guess Luemas, you have yet to reach puberty? ![]() Sorry for that patronizing statement, but yes I've seen plenty of people turn that way in a heartbeat. |

I most likely have, but my point is, sure I can feel my eyes change in a heartbeat. That happens a lot. But it isn't true love? Can you agree with me on this? |

@Luemas: Are you saying that Romeo thought he felt love, but that he didn't? Or that he felt love, but that he did not have a "correct" basis for feeling love (Juliet was not worthy of his love, or he had not taken the time to see if he would love her entire person and not just the first impression he had gotten of her)? |

Rosaline had just broken up with Romeo because she has sworn chastity (abstinence of the day). Romeo is almost 18 and Juliet is almost 14. Romeo meets Juliet at a party sneaks into to her garden and watches her silently for a few minutes. Then he creepily climbs up her wall and strikes up a conversation. After a few minutes of chatting he asks her to marry him, she says yes. That's the end of it. They have known each other for like 30 minutes. That's not true love that is Infatuation which everyone experiences at one point or another. Lust is just one facet of infatuation. |

Rosaline ditched Romeo because she was becoming a nun - that's two steps beyond 'abstinence.' Interestingly, despite her age, Juliet often seems to be the most mature person in the play. I think there are a fair few reasons why Juliet was 'nearly 14'. Shakespeare based the story on another where Juliet was 16, but in his day, all actors (even the female ones) were male. Female characters were often played by youngsters, so the idea of a 13 year old playing Juliet would make a lot of sense. Also this is partly a nod towards the poets in the crowd as a sonnet is 14 lines long, and any poet with a 13 line sonnet would not willing to try to get it published (every profession is an echo chamber). Also. Yes I do believe in love at first sight. I'm a cynic and a bastard and I doubt it will happen to me, but a world without the kind of love that is able to break down barriers and cross boundaries is not one I would like to live in. (If I find out I'm wrong, I'll endeavour to change it) |

I don't remember reading anywhere In R &J about Rosaline becoming a nun. But also, I guess Love in First sight depends on your definition of Love. Which brings us back to where we started. |

you're right about the bit about her becoming a nun. I opened my copy of the book and leafed through it. She swears chastity, which, to be fair, is still one step beyond abstinence. See, I think one difference may be that I don't think that love is necessarily something that stays the same forever. I can think of a couple relationships I've had in the past which have since ended. They began with a spark and lasted for a while. And afterwards I wondered "what was I thinking?" and the answer was, I was in love. I know you're a Pink Floyd fan but the line I feel works best was from Ludo (but only if you listen to the entire song - Goodwill hunting by myself): "Milkshakes melt and people change..." I don't think it was any less love just because it ended, or because it started abruptly. I think it might be very easy to spend your whole life looking to True Love and not settling for anything less only to miss it when you see it. |

if love is disposable and you try a bit before you buy and theres not too much commitment and you dont have God as the third thread then obviously what you may call "love" will change or it may appear to you to "change" and if you watch porn your relationships will suffer....

actually, as a joke Christmas present we were given Pirates XXX, a ridiculously high budget spoof (seriously, it had CGI and ships and everything) of Pirates of the Caribbean. That warmed many a winter night, I can tell you (eye-patches make everything more fun! yarrr!). If you don't try before you buy, how do you know you love it? How can you be ready to make that sort of a commitment? |
