Who doesn't like good old Thor with his thunder hammer.
Kinda like Zeus, except less strike you with lightning bolt as hammer you into oblivion with a very shiny object.

Yes, shiny objects!

Interesting observation you made there. There are in fact a lot of similarities between the old Greek/Roman Gods and the Norse Gods. I would assume there to have been a lot of cultural exchange behind this, which is sorta exiting in itself. Kinda in the same way many Arabic fairy tales (like from 1001 nights) have striking similarities to old Germanian ones (like Norwegian fairy tales or the ones gathered by the Grimm brothers).

Exactly, the area between Eufrat and Tigris (in the middle east) were one of the first places to develop large cities and accompanying culture, so I would expect a lot of creative works to be traced back to this area. Just look at the similarities between ancient Egyptian beliefs with many modern religions.

Which means they all stemmed from a common belief that was passed on to their children.

Which means that 5000% of the stuff we learn in History can be reduced to Mankind repeats itself. :D
No Theres much more to history, but you have to admit...

I completely concur :D (If you either ignore the math part of your post, or take it as an ingenious way of commenting on how much we learn in our History-classes compared to how much has been discovered)

Yeah... the second one.
That's it.
But now that you mention it, I think we should get lists of different Cultures God's and compare them side by side.
And match them up.
That sounds fun.

I think so too, though I must admit I am prone to look for similarities and so any info I'd find would probably be biased towards focusing more on what's the same rather than what's different.

Ah, not really trying to promote Allah, just continued on a discussion with ARAZEC on why she preferred the Bible rather than the Koran. I interpret her answer to be "because Jesus seems cooler in the Bible".

Actually I'd rather be promoting the ol' Norse religion Åsatru. Simply because it doesn't get much cooler than Thor and Odin (often called Wutan).
so you're a pagan.......huh......posting in a christian forum....hehehe what are YOU trying to prove?

I find it's easiest to learn about them in story form. So you make fun connections.

I'm listing some of the most important "Gods" and "Godesses" (Æsir) and some not so important ones, I have not listed any of the opponents to the Gods (Jotnir) as they are not so often worshipped. The names are close to Old Norwegian and are not exactly the same in modern Norwegian. A lot of the Æsir also change position (like who is the God of Wisdom etc.) during the Viking age, so this is more as an example of a sample of Gods.

Male Æsir
Baldr: Light, beauty
Bragi: Skaldship (like bardship, kinda)
Forseti: Justice
Höðr: Blindess
Hœnir: indecision, swiftness
Loki: Murder, deception (this guy is a real jerk, and is the one who will betray Odin in the final days)
Njörðr: the sea, seafaring, wind, fishing, wealth, and crop fertility
Odin: Creation, death, poetry, royalty, runic alphabet, sacrifice, the valkyries, warfare, wild hunt, wisdom (yeah he’s the man, King of the Æsir)
Óðr: Long travels
Thor: Lightning, thunder, general buttkicking.
Týr: War, assembly (like a primitive court or parliament)
Ullr: skis, archery, ring oaths, hunting, shields
Váli: Vengeance

Female Æsir
Eir: Medical skill
Freyja: Beauty, fertility
Frigg: Foreknowledge
Gersemi: Beauty
Gerðr: Beauty
Gná: Errands
Hel: Death (she rules Hel, which is where you go post mortem if you do not die in battle)
Hlín: Protective guardianship
Iðunn: Apples, eternal youth
Lofn: Forbidden marriage (you just have to have a Goddess for that)
Nanna: Death from grief
Nótt: Night
Rán: Death at sea (I'm sure there's one for "Death from choking on cranberries" as well)
Rindr: Rape, vengeance (Rule #34 of Norse Mythology: If it exists, there's a god for it)
Sif: Golden hair
Sjöfn: Love
Skaði: Snow, mountains
Snotra: Wisdom, grace

Well the Norse have a lot that the greek don't
I'll cross reference them as closely as I can tomorrow. It's somewhat late now.
Somewhat.

The Greek probably had loads more as well, but I'm guessing many have disappeared before being recorded in writing.
