ORLY? Then ask your daddy how mommy used to look when she was younger, and I can assure you those chicken-wings that got her from there to here were not free.

(I apologize for this crude joke, but this forum is on a US-server and I hear that making degrading yet humorous comments about your opponents mother is how you do a proper scientific discourse over there)

either way you have to factor in so much more to the equation - like the proportion of the money spent on food and the proportion spent on liposuction!

@ARAZEC: Since every embryo starts out as a female template and only switch paths to develop male traits due to hormones later in the development of the fetus, I would say that it makes more sense to say that man comes out of woman (which the baby will also literally do even later)

And the end times have been right around the corner for 2000 years. I'm starting to think that "soon" is the Biblical word for either never, or millions of years into the future. After all, some apologists say that a day counts as almost a billion years or so, and then "any minute now" could easily be a couple of hundred million years. Don't get your hopes up ARAZEC, you may have to wait a long while to see me with all my family and friends being tormented forever :)

So he didn't get it right the first time?

If you are certain I will make it to heaven, but unsure if you will, then you and I have extremely different interpretations of the Bible :D

Also, about the m/f thing.
Technically, the males genes determine the future gender of the child. Which was why Henry VIII was so funny.

@Luemas: Technically, it's the chromosome content of the fertilizing sperm-cell that determines the gender. During the meiosis, in which the individual sperm cells are produced, half of the cells will wind up with an X-chromosome and half with a Y-chromosome. Even though the gender of the offspring will be determined by which of these cells first reaches and inseminates the egg, this process usually has little to do with the genetic makeup of the male (unless there is some sort of genetical process that can affect the survivability of these cells within the male body, of which I have not heard).

In fact, some studies suggest that it is the environment these cells meet when they enter the female reproductive system that determines which type of cell will reach the egg, as there has been found differences in the speed and survivability of the X- and the Y-carrying sperm-cells.

it isn't exactly true that all embryos develop as female until a point where the SRY gene on the Y chromosome kicks in. For instance, to begin with, the structures which eventually lead form the genitalia of both sexes are present, but depending on the signalling factors and hormones present, the irrelevant bits regress whilst the appropriate structures develop.

There are other aspects in which Concolors description is more apt, for instance in the central nervous system at a much later point.

I didn't know that the environment could affect the y or x carrying sperm differently as I was under the impression that the contents of the cell did not directly contribute to the cells formation.
Luemas is correct in saying though, that it is the male's contribution which ultimately determines sex

@cheesy: Thanx, but as far as I know none of us are actual biologists. So you should take it with a pinch of salt.

@conradw: I would agree with you that it's not strictly correct to ascribe the foetus to a certain gender so early in the process. What I meant was that as far as I've heard it will develop into a female unless something kicks in.

As to the difference between the types of sperm cells, there's a quick answer to that one.

And I stand by my statement that the female's body is where the selection of the gender happens. In fact I support my rantings with observations done in the rather tedious article presented here (only parts of the article is related to my point. I should probably have found a more fitting source, but I'm lazy)

ah so the difference is purely physical/osmotic. I'm not so sure about the scientific basis of a baking soda douche though - that seems a little bit like 'i read it on the internet' to me.

That second link isn't working i'm afraid.

damn right we have different interpretations!

you seem to suggest that for any of it to be true, it all has to be.

I'm as confident as i can possibly be that you're not going to hell - can we at least agree on that?
