I'm sorry, but if only parts are true, how on earth do you distinguish the true parts from the false ones? And if I'm not going to hell then what are all those evangelists going on about? There's no reason for me to repent my sins or accept Jesus as anything. I'm not going to hell anyway, so I don't have to care. |

Yes, but now I can tell them with confidence that they can just go home and enjoy their day, as no one are going to hell anyway

Both you and conradw said I'm not going to hell. This means that leading a sinful life as an unbeliever still does not send you to hell. |

Oh yes, there are better things that they could be doing with their days than trying to convince you that you're going to hell and that you deserve it. And to answer your other question, why not do it the same way you assess the truth of any other claim, or (dare I say it) legend. |

I would agree, but that leads me to the conclusion that the whole book is a gathering of complete and utter fairy tales and unreliable stories. And I most certainly get a lot more useful information about the world as well as moral guidance from reading three or four Calvin and Hobbes comics. I would claim that the majority of Christians I've met seem quite convinced that their study of the Bible leads them to the conclusion that there is a hell where sinners and/people who have not accepted Jesus as their savior will be tormented for eternity. I'm glad you do not share their conviction, but I wonder how so many manage to make that error? Edited by Concolor, 30 Nov 2009, 10:44 AM.

@ARAZEC: The error of interpreting the Bible as saying that there is a hell and that sinners/unbelievers will be put in it. conradw asked me to assess the Bible as I would any other source. Why would you claim that the Bible warrants more respect than other written texts? |

The bible is clear about sinners we are all sinners-Jesus is the only way now you call yourself someone who makes rational choices based partly on the emotions of others -its disrespectable to call the Bible Dog Droppings unless your rational thinking means to purposely be offensive |

Don't tell me you've decided to become a Calvinist!? And you have to admit there is SOME truth in the Bible. There were in fact Romans around at that time for instance. There were also Jews. So it isn't completely devoid of fact. I'm sure there are other examples of historical facts in the bible, and even more examples of things that people at the time saw as historical facts. The bible does speak of sinners being punished for all eternity. And that's why I don't think the bible is the inerrant word of God. I think its completely natural and human to hope your enemies suffer eternally. It becomes a problem morally, however, when those being punished are not your enemies - that's probably why the Westboro Baptist church forms such a close knit community, precisely so that they don't know or care about people who are doomed for hell. Why do they make that error? possibly because they don't know you well enough to know that you can be a good person without god. |

i'm just wondering, apart from the insensitivity, what's the difference between me saying the bible is full of the crazy, and Concolor saying its bull? |
