That's why I'm asking if Abraham is also in hell. Is he? because then Lazarus, in Ambrahams bosom, is also in hell. I would think it would make more sense if he was in heaven. There is even a great chasm between the two places they are. |

Well I interpret the parable as saying that the rich man is in hell and Lazarus and Ambraham are in heaven. I thought the parable was to show that it does not matter if you are rich or poor but that people that follow God and his commands (like Lazarus) go to heaven and people who don't go to hell. For me this would mean that the only part I would see of God would be the underside of his slippers as I would look up at heaven from hell. If you say that both the rich man, Lazarus and Ambraham are in hell, I have problems making sense of this parable. Why was Ambraham sent to hell? I thought he would be in heaven? And Lazarus as well. If they don't get in, who does? |

I say that because it seems like the most reasonable explanation to me. And if I go to heaven then they must let basically everyone in, so why would people be encouraged to believe if you can get in without believing? |

Ok, my pastor has talked about this parable before so let me talk about it. Hades, the greek word for the underworld, is the afterlife, which is seperated by a great schizm, with one side being hell and the other Abraham's bosom, or heaven, whatever you want to call it. Now, you can see across Schizms or cliffs or whatever you wish to call them, and you can call across them. Simple enough? And actually, nowhere we go leaves God's presence, be it the heights of Heaven or the depths of Hell. So maybe hell isn't the lack of God's presence, just the lack of his good presence. Or atleast that's one view on it. |

wasn't all of this a parable anyway? I thought we were allowed to take it as not literally true, even the fundamentalist members of the church? |

No, it isn't a parable, does it say the parable of the rich man and Lazarus? No. It says the rich man and lazarus. Also, Parables don't use names. Think of all the parables you know. Do any of them mention names. Now why would this one be the only to? It is only logical to presume it isn't. |

Jesus told the story to illustrate the point. It is metaphorical and a parable. It's all about context. When does Jesus ever relate actual events? Especially to Pharisees? This would be the only occasion where he does so. Indeed, Luke is so chock full of parables that to suggest that this is biographical is illogical! Why bury a historical account in amongst all of these parables? |

Yeh I believe that you'll all end up in heaven. But I don't believe anyone goes to hell (nope, not even Hitler). |

@ARAZEC: I take that as a compliment actually, since I know you mean it well. It's the same as I want for you to have a long and happy life even though I assume you want to die as quickly as possible to be united with God. @conradw: Do you not believe in the existence of hell? Why not, I thought my recently quoted parable makes it rather clear how it will go with people who don't follow God? |
