I don't have a position on whether or not hell exists, but seeing as I don't believe anyone goes there, I reckon the point is moot.

The Bible says a lot of weird stuff. Everyone has to pick and choose. and in the words of Jack Black, I'll "choose love instead of hate"

That sounds a little haphazard. How would you know that you are choosing the right things to believe in?

a little bit of reason
a little experience

a whole lot of good humour

St Augustine had a heuristic that was to do with being very sceptical of any notion that didn't align with the love of God primarily. (he didn't follow it very often and instead spent a lot of his time justifying why it really did fit - an admirable goal but a poor result in the end).

Does this mean that you hold the Bible up against your reason and experience to find which parts to follow?

Does this not mean that you value your reason and experience higher than the Bible?

Concolor, I'll make a nice little catchphrase for you: I worship God, not the Bible.

@ARAZEC: So when someone you love dies, you do not cry or feel sadness at all?

@conradw: Then why do you bother reading it if it's not important to you? How do you know the Vedas would not give you a thousand times more inspiration?

But there is not a single reason for you to cry, why do you still do it?

Ah I see, just like if someone you loved moved to New Zealand. Even if you're moving there in half a year yourself you'll still miss them enough to cry?

conradw, you can't pick and choose from the bible, or else the bible itself is moot. the bible applies to all ages in that, the bible has three perceptions intertwined in it. the mental perception, which is the scientific side of god, in that everything in the bible lines up scientifically and historically in CERTAIN points of the bible (after some math and genealogy of course) ... the physical perception in that the bible makes simple sense, which becomes visible after a small time dedicated to common sense... and the spiritual and figurative perception, in that things make sense if NOT taken literally.

I'm kind of confusing myself saying this, boy it sure is hard trying to explain something to someone else, (especially over the internet) but I'll make it simpler. the bible has three different meanings, which are all present at the exact same time.

the physical meaning applied to the early christians, that took everything at face value.

the spiritual meaning applied to the medieval and imperial epoch christians, that took everything as a metaphor.

and the scientific meaning (the most difficult to understand, and requires knowledge of the other two to understand) which applies to people nowadays that "always seek a sign" and need physical proof to go by.

an example of such meanings are most clearly found in revelations, where it mentions the locusts with woman's hair, that rumble like chariots. christian scholars have suggested that this is a metaphor for helicopters, that rumble and look like locusts. it can be taken at physical value (like in vorago. they're actually considered locusts) and scientifically, which shows the patterns of past locust epidemics, and suggest that a stronger wave could be present in the future.

sorry for the torrents, don't know if it helped anyone, but the point is, the bible means different things to different people as history progresses. someone 100 years down the road is going to see it different than we do, and we need to look at the whole bible in order to figure it out.

@concolor: I'm sure I would find some inspiration in the Vedas although I'm sure I'd also find a lot of the crazy. I've tried reading the Koran, but it is an extremely difficult book to follow (I hope to return to it soon). One of the things it mentions that I've thought about a lot is its call to make a servant of yourself. This is echoed in Christianity with the least among you being the greatest.
Most recently, I've started reading about ancient Celtic/Briton/Anglo-Saxon/Danish/Norse mythology. I've also read a little bit of Greek drama.
In short, I'll get the the Veda when I get to it

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by the bible being moot. Check it out: Do you eat shellfish? If you do, you'll probably quote Acts 10:15 "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean." Or that Jesus fulfils the law
If so, you've decided that this trumps the law in leviticus.

I'm trying to understand what you mean by moot. If you're telling me that the truth of a statement like "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" depends on whether or not believers can drink poison without danger, then I think you've got your priorities wrong.

@conradw: So do you pick parts of the Celtic/Briton/Anglo-Saxon/Danish/Norse mythology to believe in as well?

I believe there is probably some truth to a lot of them. To be honest, I've only just started reading this big thick book of them, so I'll tell you when I actually know something to share.
