@conradw: Actually, what I was trying to understand was your method for choosing a view of life. From my preliminary impression you seem to piece it together from what you find in holy books that seems reasonable to you, and that you happened to start with the Bible (I personally think the Koran is a lot easier to get through than the Bible). This may of course not be accurate, I'm just stating the impression I got.

Basically I'm trying very hard to find something to disagree with you on, since I would find it very interesting to discuss something with you where we don't just agree all the time.

@Junior: I think conradw's passage about the Bible being moot was directed at you (otherwise I've misunderstood something).

Don't worry, I can disagree with you if you like :D
I interpret your torrents as a way of giving the Bible a "get out of jail free"-card. Basically you're saying that the Bible in some sense will always be correct because if you just put enough effort into it you can always interpret it to say something relevant about the present. I would claim that the exact same principle can be used on any text ever written, especially holy books, as they are often full of parables. I bet I can find stuff in the Koran, Vedas, etc. etc. that can be interpreted to mean a lot of relevant things if you just put your mind to it.

In conclusion, if you try to take this as credit to the Bible being true or relevant for all ages, you must accept the same amount of credit to every text ever written.

I will add though, that your rant reminds me of rather high-level double thinking that one normally hear from theologians, so I would not be surprised if you ended up as a theologian one day. (Coming from me this is not really a compliment, but if you want to you can take it as such)

Junior, I did address what you said. Just not by attaching your name to it.

Well, one difference is that I do believe in a God and you don't. Although even then, I don't think what I would describe as God and you would describe in terms of purely human virtues are so dissimilar.

I was once described as the Worst Christian my friend had ever met (which, surprisingly enough, he meant as a compliment). I prefer to look at it differently: I'd make a very good secular humanist if only i could shake this notion of the divine.

(not that notion of the divine is something I'm trying to shed).

@concolor: I was trying to show that ALL of the bible is ALWAYS relevant. you can't pick and choose, or you'll lose the complete message.

@Junior:I know, but I would claim that the level of interpretation that requires would make any text relevant to almost anything.

@conradw: Your notion of the divine is truly fascinating to me. I must warn you that, being only human, there will be plenty of times when I will try to shake that notion off of you, even though that's not really what I'm here for. But if you have any alternative methods I can employ to get a better understanding of it than to pry at it to see how hard it sticks, I'm more than happy to hear some suggestions :D

@concolor: that's where we get into multiple physical, mental and spiritual meanings. the jewish language is actually designed to carry on even more depth, with each word carrying multiple definitions.. the bible is like a giant riddle. I believe that's so that when we get interested in it, we spend an increasing amount of time deciphering it. for God that's very maniacal.

well I've never seen a demon. So why should I?
Don't think im weird for bringing this back, but i never noticed it.
Don't be rude now. A demon is something-anything-sent from the devil to distract us from our relationship with God. (like ghosts)
A demon could be a person in your life, a girl, the woman at the grocery market. could be an addiction, a temptation.
you may not always see them, like i could.
i'll post something about that later maybe.
but, depending on who you are and what your beliefs are, a demon will appear different to you than other people.

every good looking girl is now a demon? just getting a bit silly now isn't it?

Besides, i think there are a few girls on this site and I'm sure a couple must be good looking. Are you saying that they are devils?

So demons look different depending on your beliefs? So maybe that explains why I haven't seen any? because I don't believe in them because I haven't seen any - somewhat circular isn't it?

@conradw: I think you're onto something here. In fact, I can prove mathematically that girls are evil (I stole this from somewhere):

Let's first establish that girls require time and money:
Quote:

Girls = time x money
And we all know that "time is money", so we get that girls are money squared:
Quote:

Girls = money x money = money^2
And money is the root of evil (money = power, power corrupts and is therefore the root of evil), so we get that girls equal the root of evil squared:
Quote:

Girls = (root(evil))^2
Now if you square a root, the root and square will neutralize each other and we are left with the following conclusion:
Quote:

Girls = evil

Ex-SQUEEZE me? What is up with you and your missunderstandings? Did I SAY all good looking girls were evil? It was an example. Wow. And yeah, there are pretty girls on this site. Why the Farg would I call myself a demon?
And it doiesn't matter if you believe in demons or not. They're still there. It's not like the believers get bombarded and people who don't believe get left alone.
And Concolor, don't encourage him.

But I wanna ^o)

And my proof is mathematically correct :thumbs:

Oh, and cheesebug just made a very important point about what I would call objective reality (or nature):
It does not matter if you believe you can fly, if you jump off a cliff you'll still fall like a rock.
