@conradw: What is your take on the origins of the laws of nature?

I think the laws of nature are purely descriptive, not prescriptive. They are not broken because we write them to describe things we see happen consistently. The don't require a supernatural enforcer, because these rules don't require one.

in the case from that atheist experience video, I'm unimpressed with the notion of the arguement. But I am also underwhelmed by Dilahunty's failure to make it clear to the person putting it forward as to why it doesn't work.

@conradw: OK, I'll rephrase the question then: Why do these things happen consistently?

The video is related to the "All religions"-thread so I'll answer that part in post #104 over there.

I don't know why the world is the way it is.

It would be easy to say Coz God made it that way. I don't think that's a good enough answer. What about the notion that the universe is the way it is because otherwise we wouldn't be living in this universe, but instead one with laws like these. I'm not sure that cuts it either.

It does seem like an enormous coincidence that things just happened to work out the way they did. But if I shuffled a deck of cards and handed them out, you could say 'what are the odds against the cards being dealt exactly the way they were?'
Maybe the laws of physics could have ended really weird but whatever sentient life formed it might think to itself 'how lucky we are the the laws of physics is the way it is.' that is of course IF sentient life forms.

I think M-theory, (string theory's favourite child) may have some answers including why gravity is so much weaker than other forces, but so strong at long range. I've not looked into it as much as i would have liked.

@conradw: Well I think I basically agree to more or less everything you just wrote :D Especially your comment about how our intuitive notion of statistics is usually way off target.

I'm a bit skeptical towards the explanatory powers of M- or even string-"theory" for that matter. Sure the equations look nicer if we assume this and that, but I will count it as purely philosophical until we get some practical falsifiable predictions from it. But as philosophy and a potential theory it is of course really exiting! Just imagine if our gravity is merely leaking from a nearby universe into ours :)

see I hear that and think 'what must that universe be like?' and obviously there's no way to know for sure - YET!

Incidentally, would that other universe count as 'supernatural'?

Of course not, If we know that it exists then that means we have tangible evidence about it = part of objective reality = natural.

I do not only think it is fun to speculate and fantasize about how such universes would be, I count speculation and fantasy as a vital part of the scientific process! As long as one keeps a line, as clear as possible, between what is speculation and what one would count as reality of course.
