The world had become like Sodom- 1 The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. 2 "My lords," he said, "please turn aside to your servant's house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning." "No," they answered, "we will spend the night in the square." 3 But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. 4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them." 6 Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him 7 and said, "No, my friends. Don't do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don't do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof." 9 "Get out of our way," they replied. And they said, "This fellow came here as an alien, and now he wants to play the judge! We'll treat you worse than them." They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door. *People left to make up there own principals and guidlines for living needed saving from the destruction that comes from them making up there own way apart from God |

OK, let's hold on for a second there. Is this the Lot that Paul calls "a righteous man" (2 Peter 2:7-8)? Did I just read him say: Because this may very well be the utmost insane thing I've ever read. Now I've looked up this passage in a couple of translations and it seems like it really is in the Bible. ARAZEC: Please, oh please tell me that you find this passage disturbing. If not as much as I do, then at least don't you find it slightly horrible that the man just told an angry mob to rape his two young daughters? And he is considered righteous? There must be a translation-error here or something. Edited by Concolor, 20 Oct 2009, 05:37 AM.

I would think that if the Bible would serve as a moral compass it would put a bit more effort into emphasizing that it's not OK to offer your kids as rape-meat. And it is my opinion that calling a man who does so "righteous" is really not sending a clear message to the kids. Why couldn't God have sent a couple of bears to rip the rapists apart like he did with those kids who made fun of Elisha's bald head (2 Kings 2:223-24) As far as I can see the message here is "don't make fun of peoples baldness, but go right ahead and offer you children up for rape." If you're referring to your questions from this thread then these are all I found. Or are you talking about other threads? Anyway, I can answer these questions while I'm at it. I have everything to loose. All I have is knowledge of the world around me. This knowledge is flawed and limited, but it is based upon a principle of continuing improvement. This makes this knowledge more powerful than any alternatives I have ever seen. Most of the alternatives also claim to be absolutely true, a statement I can't find any evidence for. This makes me suspicious. Also, even assuming that one of these alternatives is actually right, I find the odds of hitting that exact one to be dauntingly small. Seeing as most who chooses one of these paths seem to get stuck in it, I would prefer not to choose one unless I had some convincing evidence to go by. |

I had no expectations of what kind of people to find in the Bible, so I would say: Maybe? If it helps the discussion I can probably answer: Yes. God is supposedly perfect, and Jesus is God (I think) so he would be an example of perfect people. Also I'm not sure how close "righteous" is to "perfect", but it seems to be pretty important so I would assume a righteous man would have mostly good deeds listed about him. Maybe a little nose-picking for depth. |

Okay. So how am I falling apart, and how can we use this to better our conversation? Are you saying I'm unclear? or that my statements have stopped making sense? |

I think if you look at what Lot's daughters did AFTER the destruction of Sodom, you'll see that these girls were probably not the kind of girls who would have been unwilling to spend a night rolling in the hay with a crowd of men. ... was that sexist? |
